Nice Hillman Avenger Hatchback they were

Back when they were young(ish) one fella nearby had two on the drive - Lotus-engined ones, that is. The two-tone blue one made some impression on me as a younger lad.

Avon Sunbeam Lotus, loved mine.

While all of the likely lads were skidding around our area in Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts circa 1991/92, there was one guy on our estate with a Sunbeam done in the same white/wide blue stripe as the works rally car, as below. With a 1600 Ti motor (twin 40s as standard), it was more than a match for the Escorts.

Been a good week for hotwheels hunting.

Morrisons provided this lot. 20250528_135039.jpg.3d8cc3067fedbbdcc360abc9e5536b58.jpg

Smyths netted me these.

Not what I'd normally go for but, dont find treasure hunts and quite like these.

The 8 ball car answered it's own question.

I don't have a problem these for decorating my workshop that's nowhere near finished. 😆

One of the friendly Entertainer staff let me go through four or five boxes in Tesco earlier - someone had taken the BMWs out of every one, even leaving the Ferraris behind!

Got a couple of bits in the post today, spotted a redline Torero in a job lot, turned out not to be very good with a missing wheel unfortunately

Not to worry though, I also scored this charming little Siku 1200 Beetle due to it having a poor description. Not found one of these before

Some Entertainer finds from mid-week:

IMG_20250529_0118082.jpg.91fc0b45b9711fd55728f9e67963e6d3.jpg

I hadn't realised until now that Mattel have two completely different Challenger castings in their current lineup, with different pack artwork too -

IMG_20250530_1554552.jpg.94fd0bde001c707f34132e805a9598f9.jpg

The purple one's marked as a 1970, while the orange one's a 1971 model.

There wasn't a massive amount of difference between these two model years, mainly just changes to the grille, lights and side vents, but the miniature versions are quite different in their construction:

IMG_20250530_1556052.jpg.e4e503a4c657c9a98e91a6c4d08c03aa.jpg

Orange one has the bumpers as part of the base moulding, with the grille and front and rear lights made from the black interior moulding.

The purple one is just a single metal casting encompassing everything on the body except the hood scoop.

IMG_20250530_1556132.jpg.84e11fbb38b4a3ca0019241cf3a6d6e8.jpg

Same construction to the rear, while the orange version wears a bigger rear spoiler too.

IMG_20250530_1556362.jpg.569cb720e6f94903373da0f018bfd53d.jpg

The base indicates that the orange '71 Challenger is copyrighted to 2024, while the purple '70 is given as a 2006 casting revised in 2017.

Odd that two very, very similar subjects have been separately modelled, and that they're both available in the 2025 lineup!

I'm sure there's a reason behind it somewhere...

Also spotted this POS signage in The Entertainer:

IMG_20250528_1307432.jpg.8022a1545249345c54c3e02bd7374c28.jpg

I mean, it's not unusual for toymakers to target adults with their adverts to get them to buy toys for their kids, but I think it's less common to see promotional materials the other way round. Indicative of the rise of the kidult sector as a key driver for toy shop sales?

Maybe quite telling that the models they've chosen to fill out the separate display are all those peg-warmer premiums from ages ago that collectors clearly don't want. Offloading them as Father's Day gifts might be one way to do it, but I reckon they'd be better off doing what Smyth's do and drop the prices to £3 - might get some takers then (even if just as wheel donors).

Most of those look like white metal hand built models, the Somervilles definitely are. Probably the equivalent of £80- £100, hence dust.

Yes lot of British made white metal from Brooklin, Lansdowne and Somerville. They can be found at auction quite often, and prices are a lot less than asked by retailers. I have bought and sold hundreds of the years.

Somervilles are no longer produced, but they did make some great Volvo and Saabs along with a lot of old British cars.

Brooklins and Lansdownes are still being produced, they are part of the same group. The Brooklin models are all American cars and the Lansdownes are all British. They retail for well over £100 now. The next Lansdowne release is something that has not been modelled for a long time, the Austin Montego. It will be available in both saloon and estate versions. However you need deep pockets as the pre-order price is £134.

I can't see why someone would pay £134 for a Montego saloon when you can get a partwork model for a fraction of the price and it still looks great.

I've had 1 Lansdowne model, a Rover P5 and I found it pretty charmless. I sold it on about ten years ago.

Obviously people do buy them though, I'd be interested to understand the attraction.

They are handmade models for collectors', and are made in limited numbers. However, a lot of Brooklins and Lansdownes do not have a stated limited, hence why on the auction market they can be found a lot cheaper than new. A lot of the early Brooklins and Lansdownes can be had for around £20-£30, but some, like the MkIV Cortina are worth a bit more.

I think the appeal is in that it is hand made and a lot of what they model is not made by other manufacturers. If you collect a certain marque, then you will probably go for some of the hand made items to fill the gaps. Others might just like to collect models from one maker, so no matter what Lansdowne produce that type of collector will buy them.

I'm a Mini collector so I have a couple of examples of the only Mini they have ever made, the Mini Van with Lansdowne script on the side. It's crude and looks crap, even when compared to an early Lledo Vanguards, but it's a 1/43rd Mini.

DSCF7819.JPG.8b3d09a55f470a0f523a8536aac20ce0.JPG

The Rover you had was probably LDM 5, the fifth model ever made by Lansdowne. Being an early model is was quite basic with cast in wipers. The shape is quite good if a little chunky, but the whole thing is metal, even the lights. The only part that is not metal is the window vac-form.

For the past while I've been trying to think of a hobby.

Technically, messing about with cars has been my hobby since I was young. I've raced, restored, driven and broken them. I fully intend to carry on as long as I can.

During the week I am a mechanic in car dealerships. All though I am usually very modest, I think I am the best mechanic I know! 😆😆😆

But sometimes the lines between my job and my hobby become blurred! Lunchtimes spent freeing off and cleaning parts for the weekend, shuffling about in the garage until late and at weekends.

I'm worried one day I may reach breaking point and resort to taking up some sort of physical excercise or sport! What if I end up with a pedalbike? Or golf clubs? I dont want to be that guy!

Then I remembered my Covid project! Unlike all those lucky gits that were signed off long enough to tile the bathroom/fix the garden/become alcoholic/complete pornhub/start a family/get divorced I was only furloughed for 3 weeks!

Long enough to make a model of what I would probably have been working on had I been at work...

FINISHED!

Recently when raking about in my garage I found the model kit I had started before going back to work. Surprisingly I hadnt lost any bits so I stuck it together and added it to my luxury display case...

Red Subaru Impreza wagon

...Issuing a 'do not dust' order to Mrs. Delux, its still too soon to joke about the Pajeros missing mirror!

Anyway, to test whether this is a suitable hobby before spending any more I decided to build one more model.

If it turns out shite or frustrates me as much as the Impreza ('kin roof bars! Glue them on them paint them, not the other way round like I did!) then I'll carry on.

So today I go stuck into 'Fish paradise'!

Suzuki Carry 'Fish paradise' model

Might turn out ok. Might sit for 5 years. Might join a gym!

I didn't actually mean to buy this Corgi Cub, just put it aside and send a pic in the WhatsApp group to see if anyone fancied it as it has windows(!). It was in my bag when I got home so I guess I bought it

Dude…nothing is ever bad enough that you need to start exercising or playing fucking golf!😆

Youve chosen a great hobby there, and the models are looking great. Carry on👍

Some of those look fantastic.
Mustard mit, I’m not one for collecting those but even so, to fill in a gap I’d probably buy one if the price was right (looking right at that Ventora there!).

Is it Lansdowne that do a PC Cresta?
