Beyond his short oval racing prowess* Derek Fiske is a well-known name round these parts, from his car/van hire and garage business:

1989 Nissan Skyline 3.0SGL + Transit recovery truck

I rented this one back in 2002, a friend hired something similar from them more recently.

*He moved on from stock cars to National Hot Rods, winning the world championship in 1975.

Also just realised it is a different casting, well it had to be

I had no idea the Derek Fiske has opening bonnet

For some reason, I expected to see a Ford engine in there, the 1700 from a Zephyr 4 or a Kent.  But no, that’s a BMC B-series wearing a pair of SU carbs

I remember seeing this set on a stand at a local toy fair 16-17 years ago, even then it was £500 and the seller was confident he'd get it.

Managed to get some quality time in on the small stuff this weekend......

IMG_9805.JPG.725fed1afd80b8d02b64a44bc5c9ead4.JPG

Had a major sort-out and putting away session on the 1/64-ish stuff following numerous recent purchases. They live in a variety of boxes on top of the 'display' case in the garage. Had a worrying moment when I couldn't find the Moving Parts Land Cruiser recently sent to me by @Datsuncog then I found it in the box with other stuff he'd found for me. Also had to go for a much bigger box for Toyota/Lexus when I found another box full. HW Premiums and modern Majorettes take up a lot of space....

Then I managed a decent session on the Fujimi Nissan 240ZG build:

Took a lot of masking to paint the arch flares and front valance.....

Wow. I used to drive this throbbing beast (318i) on a regular basis. I fitted the eyebrows and lowered it

I borrowed one of these (same colour as well) from a mate when my GTis gearbox exploded, I hated it.

Obviously I have no taste!

Obviously! My mate is a serial E30 botherer, I have to say other than the lack of BHP from that 1.8, it was such a good driver's car. I'd use it for the run to Eastbourne and back from Chelmsford, something daft like 30 roundabouts on the route each way, I just wouldn't slow down for any of them unless I had to. It just stuck to the road like the proverbial shit to a blanket.

Must admit, I love the E30 Bimmer. I love the E21 before it even more. They’re such nice cars to drive and really solidly built too. Imho they’re the best of BMW.

I had an E36 too which was the polar opposite imho. Absolute shit compared to the E30.

I used to occasionally work on an A reg 320 that had a ridiculous amount of mileage on it. Lovely car still though, and the only way you knew it was a mega miler was the state of the drivers seat. It was still tight as a drum to drive.

With the six cylinder though they could catch you out when wet and turn about suddenly on a crest.  Don’t ask me how I know. Thankfully it was at dawn and I hit nothing, merci, Monsieur Gendarme.

This.  But people absolutely loved them and discarded the E30 overnight

But maybe I was just ‘old’

E30 325i is already the ‘collectors Mk1 Escort’ stratospheric purchase price minefield.  I did it wrong.  Again!

Bimmer-bothering mate parked one of his 325s backwards into some parked cars in Southend after catching a wet manhole cover under power, and I remember doing a 180 on a roundabout on another occasion in one of them. Good tyres are pretty essential although he insists the one he wrote off was already bent somewhere and could never be aligned correctly.

This is the guy who I did the Matchbox E30 cabrio for recently

I had an old E21 320 six that did a nice pirouette once. I was only doing about 15mph round a bend and the back went. Luckily I did not hit anything so was able to carry on my merry way. I also had an E21 316, with the 1.8 engine. That never caused any problems. Great cars those E21s. I'd rather have one than an E30, those are a bit too Yuppie for me.

An engineer visited my place of work last week to service a piece of equipment. I saved these o-rings from going in the bin as they’re a perfect fit as tyres for these Dinky models!

I had several E21s all of the 316 variety. Roundabouts in the wet were no problem.

I then traded in my X plate 316 for the 323i E30. On the first roundabout at the Seafield road junction in Inverness I approached as I would have done in the 316, only this time the back end of the E30 jumped out and I was only saved by the LSD straightening me up.

I’ve always been careful of the E30 in the wet since then.

I'm working on another "simple" resto today, Matchbox T3 Transporter, the Graffic Traffic version. Compared to the early 70s Pontiac I've just done, this casting is awful - the detail is still there but the metal is full of defects, there's flash all over it and it's just generally much lower quality than the earlier casting.

Base bears the legend "Made in China"

PXL_20240318_124252446.jpg.162a8a8ad66e178e28dcca17029f9cf2.jpgPXL_20240318_124302619.jpg.a016c96bed2b255597f44c33cdd81098.jpgPXL_20240318_124318194.jpg.46743ccd28cd2964eba4db1c4cab6a4a.jpg

I've already started giving it a bit of a sand, this is a resto but the QC is so poor I've got to make it a bit better before laying paint on. Some of these defects will still show but they would have through the original paint anyway
