It must be commercial vehicle day

Of course as we all know, the tailgates on these are extremely susceptible to coming off and getting lost

What's in the box?

It's one of the last few of my F1 Ferrari collection.

Unfortunately due to the restrictions on tobacco advertising the model does not have the Marlboro logos that the actual car had in the race.

It's still a great thing though, and this is only the second time the model has seen any light since 2007.

Well, the short January day's closing in fast, so time to light the lamps and see what's what...

Quite a day for commercial vehicles, it's true.

IMG_20240112_1339452.thumb.jpg.99a0ef0a98d20ce47eadaad34b266524.jpg

These two were pretty good finds, I reckon - I've been after a regular-wheels K-11 DAF transporter for a good long while now.

The blue-and-gold version, as Any Fule Kno, is the rare one - only issued for the 1969 catalogue year

IMG_20240112_1340162.thumb.jpg.ad9fe9c3ffc6d4591e4e386e4c4ce6ad.jpg

Annoyingly, while the paint's not too bad on this one, there's some stress cracks to the windscreen.

IMG_20240112_1340052.thumb.jpg.5bef7d28b714ccbcabcfd2ee7c8156df.jpg

And something's occurred with the front suspension too - this is on its bump-stops, evidently.

IMG_20240112_1340352.thumb.jpg.20f90aaa23f0d4b564bde3f7f6608e4d.jpg

And there's a crack in the support/guide bracket at the back. It doesn't affect the working of the mechanism, but it does count as casting damage, annoyingly.

Some tyres have gone AWOL, as tends to happen, and of course the deck retaining tabs are long gone - but that's not such a worry.

The yellow and orange regular-wheeled version was made for the 1970 catalogue year only, before being replaced by the Superfast wheel version for 1971 onwards. So it's probably not much less rare than the blue version, but because it doesn't look so very different from the common Superfast wheels version, it doesn't seem to attract quite the same level of interest.

IMG_20240112_1339092.thumb.jpg.61e88bdfa2ddd4f4bfbb8f90cfbf9254.jpg

Both early types also had unpainted baseplates and grilles on the tractor unit, while from '71 on these were painted red.

I couldn't not drag out my late-issue K-11, owned since I was quite young... and, of course, 'superdetailed' with my Tamiya silver paint pen, as was my wont when I was twelve or so.

IMG_20240112_1339032.thumb.jpg.c4fb393ef4a384452de8885879999f16.jpg

It required a bit of precision excavation, as the transporter lives right at the bottom of my toybox...

IMG_20240112_1334082.thumb.jpg.89c73e2a77922f55cc2cd3fbed6a0f94.jpg

Just you lot stay there, and don't collapse.

IMG_20240112_1337312.thumb.jpg.19025ec62186ed0662fc12ad936a232a.jpg

There's gotta be a better way to store these...

But!

IMG_20240112_1341312.thumb.jpg.f89b3ab5b402486b5cbba01124171909.jpg

A transporter-tastic day, I'm sure you'll agree.

(The Guy Warrior wasn't from today, don't fret - I just had to move it out of the box to get to the DAF.)

So - how does today finish?

IMG_20240112_1512462.thumb.jpg.3452e5e066682282629efce63806e04f.jpg

The pair of K-11 DAFs I'm now feeling weirdly ambivalent about:

IMG_20240112_1508422.thumb.jpg.50893b1000048f9275e855bbfcc0a77a.jpg

Are they really something I'll cherish forever, or just big things I'll need to somehow store?

I'm super-pleased to have found them, but I'm not sure I really need them both.

If anyone reckons they can do something with the blue & gold one, I think I'd be okay with letting it go for the fiver paid.

I'm mildly regretful at not picking up the 1/24 Audi Quattro that was in one of the tubs - incomplete, yes, but otherwise not bad. First, news of the Fuego, and then the Quattro - that's two cars I had no idea Bburago had modelled until this week.

Even though I don't really collect that scale...

But hey - ain't that just the way it goes?

Not a bad day, by any stretch.

Happy Friday, kids.

Thanks Tim as always.

The Bburago Audi was far too dear. Its not that old or rare and even MIB it would be £10-£15. You were right to pass.

Hadn't realised til I got it out of the packaging that the front wheels are much smaller than the rears.

As Hot Wheels has a general tendency to overwheel its toys, it's kinda odd seeing ones that are probably reasonably accurate in terms of scale - they just seem super titchy, comparably.

It's an unexpected choice of subject matter, but good to finally have one of these impressive touring car racers - I was tempted by a red single-pack version early last year, but I dig the van and trailer that comes in this set.

There's definitely a British/European influence within Mattel at the moment, and no complaints from me about that!

I like a Yank but seeing 1:64 Escorts, Minors, the upcoming Jag etc pleases me no end

Contrasted, for maximum impact, by a nearby Antiques & Collectables place where the proprietor clearly doesn't have a scooby about toy cars, but he's not gonna let that minor impediment stand in his way...

Aye, £15 for a broken, recent, Chinese-made Mercury pull-back.

Right.

How are they retailing those MR2 at £3 a pop? They’re normally 3 times that!

Well now... there's an excellent question!

They only had that MR2 plus a modern Porsche left on the pegs, but both appeared to be 2023 releases.

I know Poundland had some Moving Parts going out the door for a few quid a year or two back, but they were old stock that had probably been languishing in a container since COVID.

This place is an independent retailer, so I'd be curious to know how they're doing it too.

I love that MR2, one to look out for.

I did a trawl of the usual places in Cumbernauld for Diecast. The Entertainer had nothing new. Quite a few Minors, 240 saloons and green Golfs on the pegs. However I did spot a couple of premium MK2 flat - fronted Escort s but at £9 and with my Rover 75s MOT looming on Wednesday, I passed. Another time maybe.

Tesco had a heaving case each of MB and HW . The MB case was quite old though with the AMC Eagle and blue back/forward car. The HW case had a nice rally Porsche 928 but I left it as I'm concentrating on 911s. They had some nice 5 packs for £11 but nothing jumped out at me.

There's also a new* Poundland in the Centre. I say new* because it shut down about 8 or 9 years ago, a 'One Below' replaced it and now it's the former again. They had a good selection and HWs were £1.50 but again, nothing I wanted. TK Maxx were entirely devoid of diecast and this branch rarely stocks anything like that now. Gone are the days of a nice range of £12.99 1:24 Nex models and pegs full of Majorette diecast.

There's been work going on here today!  Under a heavy grey sky, the weather this afternoon was good enough for some drilling and not-a-Dremelling, and some shells are ready for a stripping bath now.  Some other projects are beginning to take shape (that's all I can say about one in particular) and, how about this, I even managed to get a coat of primer on some of them!  I've still got a lot to do, and I want a day just a little warmer so I can mix up some P38.

I've recently got a cheap 216 Dinky Ferrari Dino and I had it in my head that it was a 246 GT. I used to be good friends with someone who had a yellow one with the plate TOY17 or something similar so despite not being a Ferrari fan I wanted one. Now I've looked at it properly I don't know what model it's actually meant to be. The back looks about right, but has DINO script on it and I'm pretty sure the real 246 GT had no DINO emblems. The front however looks totally wrong with the lights under a weird clear cover rather than on the wings. I've had a bit of a Google, but not found out what the Dinky is actually meant to represent, but I'm sure someone here will know!

I think Dinky's version was based on the one-off Pininfarina concept which eventually morphed into the production Dino but did wear the same badging - the Dino 206 GT Speciale, shown at the 1965 Paris Salon:

6093c22558b8513bd68df270-ferrari-magazine-2BpKxgvtQt.thumb.jpg.8e60f28b412afc90071a6ac5e1e9e2b1.jpg

The production Dino 206 GT of 1967-69 was quite a bit different, with a more conventional front end treatment (styled by Bertone), and using the new Lampredi-designed V6 built by Fiat - the Dino 246 GT was a further development on a longer wheelbase for 1969-74, with the option of a targa roof (264 GTS).

I seem to recall (from an ancient Classic & Sportscar article) that the 246 GT and GTS didn't wear any Ferrari badges - the only badging said 'Dino'.

D216N3802.jpg.1b60542667da086d6e1814d2f62560b2.jpg

The Dinky #216 'Dino Ferrari' was launched in 1967, but at the point it was designed and tooled up, the management at Binns Rd likely had no idea that a substantially different car with the same name would be launched by Ferrari around the same time!

Thanks for all of that, I'm sure I was told a lot of that stuff by my Ferrari fan mate including that the Dino wasn't badged Ferrari, it just got twisted around in my memory haha.

The funny thing is I've been passenger in many 60s/70s Ferraris including various Dinos and Daytona Spyder, but I was never really interested in them, I prefered a Mini haha.

I don’t get the appeal either tbh!
When I was in the garage we got an 80’s Ferrari of some sort in for some work. Lucky Eddy here got the job of working on it, which was an absolute nightmare!

When I was working on it most of the other guys were swarming around it lusting over it!
Tbh it was a nice enough car. But it wasn’t particularly comfortable to drive, it was an utter twat to work on, and it just didn’t do much for tbh. And I don’t like red either!!😆

This will cause some serious eyebrow raising… but I always look at cars like that, especially the engine and think, ‘they’re just playing at it really’! My Mercury engine is bigger, looks better and sounds better imho! And it’s easy to work on, cheap to work on and won’t break anywhere near as easily.
I just don’t get super cars at all.
In fact, at the time I was driving a Volvo 340 which I much preferred!🤣 keep your fucking Ferrari!

I don't like Ferraris either. Lamborghinis and especially Porsches yes, but the former just seem to be owned by people with something to compensate for

The Dino 206 and 246GT were never badged as Ferraris from the factory. The Dino name, as most probably know, was the name of Mr Ferraris son who died in the 1950s.  Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari came up with the idea of a V6 engine in the mid 1950s shortly before he died. The Dino name was applied to the front engine Ferrari 246 F1 car from 1958 and used on and off on V6 engine cars.

The Bertone designed 308 GT4 was originally sold as a Dino until the 308 GTB was released and the Dino name was then the model name for the 308 GT4.

There's a bit on the badging on this Iain Tyrrell video that says that the British importer Marrenello Concessionaires fitted 246 Dinos with Ferrari badges.

PS I've been a Ferrari fan since seeing a couple of Dinos in the Midland Bank Sports Club back in about 1972. I remember sticking my arm up the side intake to see where it went. Then Niki Lauda came along in 1975 and that was it, all my JPS Lotus stuff was now old hat and my world turned red.
