I've got several of these to hold casting while painting

As for a spray booth, the great outdoors. I use a hairdryer to warm the casting up first, especially important if the weather's cold or damp but I always do it, also to speed up drying and before each coat. I put a glove on my left hand so I don't end up with painted nails!

Downside is the crocodile clips aren't that strong so don't always get a decent grip on the posts. I do have one of these hemostats too which lock in place - better for moving the casting about while spraying but vulnerable to getting knocked off of wherever they're hung afterwards 

I've got an extractor fan rigged up in the outhouse that I was going to connect to a spray booth for times of bad weather but space is at such a premium in there I've never built one

These were all painted with a brush using good old Humbrol Enamel. After year of pissing about with plastic kits when I was  a teenager I kind of learnt how to brush paint without getting brush lines. The Ferraris are all white metal 1/43rd kits. Each one of these took around 20 to 30 hours to build

Vanguards Dolomite shown for scale.  They're made of recycled timber, specifically offcuts of redundant pallets.  For a spray booth, I just take my wheelie bin out in the alley and set up far enough away from anyone's gate.

I have a single bit of wood just like Eddys for spraying. I only spray outside in the garden as spraying in doors is not allowed. 

This Aston was done with by spraying with aerosols from a car parts shop. Grey primer, metallic base coat, and the lacquer. The finish was then cut and polished. You can see remnants of polish in the shut lines. This is a resin cast 1/43rd kit by Provence Moulage.

It’s handy to have some bits of wire and metal rod around too. Sometimes hanging them up and spraying them is easier.   
This is just a length of old metal rod with a hook bent on each end to hang stuff. On the Escort van the rod wouldn’t fit through where I needed it to so a bit of old locking wire did the job. The wire also came in handy to push the headlights out on the Corgi Buick.

Here’s the Buick after a wash off. Primer time next. There’s some nice detail on this too that’s hidden under thick factory paint. Even the cast ‘Regal’ script on the rear wings is legible without paint.

Oh yeah I've got various bits of wire too, handy for painting bases etc which have convenient holes in

Depends. Small holes or marks normal car body filler works fine. If the hole is bigger (like the coin slot in the Spot-On Commer van roof) I use some of the chemical metal putty. The type where you rip a chunk off the stick and mix it together between your fingers then I just put a strip of masking tape over the hole(s) from the outside and push the filler putty into the hole from inside. You still need to sand it after it’s set but the tape usually stops too much going through and minimises the amount of sanding you need to do. 
Obviously you need to be careful of the glazing! In the Buick when I do it I can’t leave too much of the filler on the inside of the roof either because it’ll push the glazing out of position!

This is after the Chemical metal has set and the masking tape removed. After wet sanding it back neither van needed any more filler, and both are invisible now the paint & primer are on.

After looking at the on-line catalogues, that has got to be one of the laziest auctioneers I have ever seen. And as for the estimates all being $100-$300, they'll be lucky to get bids on some of those at all. Also note there is no mention, or pictures, of any boxes for the models. Which means a lot of those kit built resin and white metal models will be at the mercy of the packers and shippers.

To try to wrap up Friday, then...

Suitably caffeinated and caramelled, I wandered back over to the main Tat Stall.

The Frankly Skint were now out on display, at a fairly alluring price.

But still, no thanks.

I'd overlooked what I believe is some sort of Evel Knievel Skycycle type toy, made by Kenner.

Not my bag, so much.

But what was more my bag was the remains of the several boxes of old tat, now combined into one box of old tat.

I mean, we've seen this stuff before - but there's still items coming to my notice.

The Timpo Toys tractor unit, for example. Hadn't clocked this until now.

The casting's not in great shape, it's true.

And one of the front axle mountings is long gone.

I'd presumed this accompanied the Timpo trailer I'd clocked in the box just the other week, but in trying to put it together I'm no longer sure it does.

The trailer doesn't sit flat on the fifth wheel, instead catching on a ledge behind the cab, and the trailer body's too close to the tractor unit's rear wheels to allow it to turn.

Still some alright items left, and he seems to be open to lowering his prices, since the ones in decent condition are mostly gone now.

Plenty of Commers left, in variable states of completeness.

Jaguar was a little rough and naturally missing the windscreen, but I hadn't noticed just what a nice casting this is until now.

Scarabo still knocking about.

Dinky tankers, too.

Plus the kind of things that are apparently estimated at $300 at auction in L.A.

Looking at the subjects and makers, I'm guessing this was a collection amassed entirely in the 1980's, though I'll need@MiniMinorMk3 to adjudicate this statement.

The highest bid I saw was $13 - bizarrely, on a Models of Yesteryear! 

I've got to admit there's a slight inkling to own a Model T Ford, advertising a Hull-based cardboard manufacturer and previously owned by a Hollywood director, and have it shipped to New Zealand. But I think I'll get over it...

So this Corgi #470 Jeep FC150 was procured from the main Tat Stall.

It's been well played-with, but seemingly not abused.

Towbar and original chunky tyres are still in place, and glazing is lightly scuffed but uncracked.

To be honest, I never really thought much about these before, and actually kinda disliked them, but the @Jon cherry-picker example (now on its way across the oceans, or one of them anyway) and the recent Hot Wheels Q-case find has kinda forced a reappraisal.

I'm not yet sure if this tan example with interior was a standalone release, or part of a gift set - like the Land Rover, this was a versatile casting for Corgi and it cropped up with all manner of accessories and appendages over the years. I understand the original #470 release from 1958 was blue and, like the rest from that era, lacked any interior moulding.

This one's growing on me, a lot - so it's a keeper, for now.

And - I finally buckled.

Yes, the 'folk art' sawn-off Dinky Mini van came home with me.

Having missed out on 'The Gay Devil' a few weeks back (no tittering at the back - that was genuinely a heartfelt piece of pre-adolescent creativity), I didn't want to leave this one to be bashed to bits in the tat box.

Even if I suspect this has been slung together by a fully-fledged, if perhaps somewhat disturbed, adult.

It's the glue.

Glue everywhere.

And the weird bits of lettering.

And the diamante earrings standing in for spotlights.

If anyone truly wants this, £1 takes it.

That was all there was from Market Blokey's stall - but the charity stall did prove worth a guddle.

This late-issue Police Patrol wearing Paris-Dakar Rally stickers isn't super-rare, but equally isn't all that common.

Some wear to the beige paintwork, but the axles are relatively unshonky and the light still rotates in its customarily unimpressive manner, so... available for 50p, if anyone fancies it?

Next up, not normally my style...

But since I picked up the 'Ramone's Body Art Shop' playset a few months back, from the Disney Pixar 'Cars' franchise, it seems only sensible to populate it a bit with the titular proprietor.

So this is also staying put for now - I'll see if I can find a few other characters from the film, just to give the set a bit more playvalue before I hand it over to my brother for his nippers.

Similarly, this Britains Honda quad and trailer set may find itself part of an opportunistically assembled farm vehicles gift set.

It's actually quite nice.

The quad has a towbar fitted, and although it will pull the trailer, I'm not sure if it's happier being towed.

Detailing is quite well done.

If anyone's really keen on this, £2 takes both the quad and the trailer.

And then... There's this lot.

Seems to be a set, but I dunno how complete or otherwise it is.

And not just any set.

OMG US PRESIDENT MOTORCADE SET.

I've never seen anything quite like this before.

I mean, first of all massive LOL at the US President rollin' in a Mercedes.

Then there's the additional fact that this appears to be a rip-off of the Majorette Merc limo from the early 1990s.

No conspicuous maker's name, but...

This 'Secret Service' Mercedes G-Wagen is, apparently, a Realtoy item:

So I'll assume they're responsible for the rest.

It's not a bad rendering, though.

Can't really say the same about this Chevrolet Caprice:

It's pretty bad, and also tiny compared to the others.

No idea what's going on with that front bumper, either.

That G-wagen looks like a Siku rip-off. The Caprice is probably an original casting that wasn't copied from a reputable manufacturer, hence it being so much shonkier than the others. An odd set indeed and I wonder if it was ever sold in the US or just foreign markets that might not realise the absurdity of putting the US president in a Mercedes.

And the style numb Mini - it looks even more brilliant* up close. I bet it could tell a psychologist an awful lot about the nutcase who made it. No, I do not want it, not even for a quid. Having that thing in the house would give me nightmares.

Yes most of the racing and sports cars are 1980's to 1990s kit builts. They do look pro-built, but with no boxes or provenance who knows. There is also a lot of British white metal stuff, again from the 1980s and 1990s. 

Highest bid so far is for a high detail 250 GTO. I'm guessing that it is an AMR (Andre-Marie Ruf), who was an artisan with a very high reputation. His models are very sort after. Current bid is $200.

The Cream version is a stand alone Corgi 470. It should have a light grey bed cover.

Got a load more done the last few days. 
UAZ van has had the little windows behind the cab doors filled over, then primed. 
Both Buicks are being primer sprayed, the ex cop car has also had roof holes filled & sanded. 
Moggy Minor is now in the spray booth getting its main colour coat. 
A60 L car has had its roof hole filled. I want this to go rock solid before I start sanding it to shape though as it’s a big hole!

And, I’ve unwrapped the masking from the SEB Escort van and Dinky Transit,

Both came out really well I think. There’s a few bits that need tidying or tiny touch ups but overall pretty good. 
The Transit was just a random colour scheme really, I wanted to do something slightly different to a plain colour but also see how good my masking was!   
There’s still bits to paint, like bumpers, lights etc but I’m happy with them so far.

Another one went through the paint stripper today too - MB KingSize Mercury Commuter wagon. Another ex cop car that’s getting the civilian makeover!

This one cleaned back nicely. And quickly! Old paint just shrivelled up and peeled straight off.

Dont they look nice in bare metal!? 
I think the dull patches are where the paint was chipped off for a long time and it’s tarnished the metal. Everywhere that was covered with paint still has shined up really nicely. Looks like new. 
This one is a really nice one, minimal damage, scratches etc into the metal. One of the Corgi Buick’s I’m doing was awful! Big dark patches everywhere, deep scratches into the roof, chunks missing on corners, dents the lot! You can certainly tell the ones that got used and abused!

I agree with all the above. Often the best ones to restore are completely overpainted as it protects everything.
