I bet that would have been delightful to work with, I’m surprised given the levels of Russian apathy in the early 80’s they opted for it.

I bet whoever got stuck with those as their vans was well pissed off! Most commercial vehicles of that time were pretty unpleasant in one way or another but they take it to a whole new level.
I wonder if the winch line is to pull something or the UAZ has got stuck!?

Its an especially bizarre choice because at that time SEB were government owned so it’s essentially the British government buying soviet equipment!

Am I seeing that right?  Handy...

At least you have a good template to make the other side out of plasticard!

Then join the club forum for 'Herpa modellers needing the other half of their kit body'

Z-Herpa-mei-18-02-01.thumb.jpg.d2ea28e1b65df0442ffd2d89f6c16e49.jpg

I couldn't quite believe it when I first opened it. Top marks to the supplier though, they just sent us another set with the correct sides no questions.

So now I have half a caravan, one complete caravan and two Astra's!

I'll post some pictures, when the complete kit is done. Just waiting on some paint, as hopefully I can add a few details without making a mess of it.

I'll build the second Astra but hopefully with a wheel swap. Undecided on the half caravan at the minute, but if someone fancies a challenge. Let me know and it's yours.

In the post today, what could be better than an air hammer and chisel set?

Well obviously a pair of Matchbox Super Kings!

Hours of fun ahead!

Even higher!

Could have lifting contest with the Corgi International, amazingly the Super Kings is even heavier than that!

Thanks @sierraman I wasn’t expecting the crane to be my thing really, but it so is...

And the transporter, well say no more...

I remember (was a boy though) the strong red influence of trade unionism still very much lingering and these were bought in 1979.  Maybe coincidence, maybe not.  I do know my old Dad, a printer and union man, considered a used Moskvich around that time.

Where the hell did you find that!?
That’s fantastic. I’m off to eBay…

On this very thread, remembered it from two years back.  But I can't remember what I just went upstairs for.

What I've gathered:

UMO Belarus had headquarters at Letchworth (the then-new 'UMO House' building is still there and retains the name at the entrance) who had plant and tractor dealerships around the UK.  The UAZ-452D nicknamed Буханка (Buhanka, Bread Loaf) was given UK type approval for a one ton payload.

image.png

The UMO Plant Ltd Surrey dealership handled RHD-converted van and pickups, branded and marketed as Trekmaster.

61859059bbff4f04de536f9cf8ee5717.jpg

Land Rover refused to re-introduce the 1-Ton and FC models.  So in 1979 SEB ordered 14 (or 19) Trekmaster and fitted them with Koenig winches.  Known registrations were in the range CJH242V, CJH243V, CJH244V (none of those on the road by 1984).  Problems were spare part supply due to regular summer overheating and lunching the differentials through misuse (stories of being being overloaded beyond 2 tons).  Not to mention the winch being used here to strap the ladder down tidily:

The side door opening out into the road was a helpful addition too.

Well I’m glad you found that! I’ve heard of those vans before but until now not seen them.
I’ve just bought a cheapo 1:43 one off the Bay so now I’ll have a right little SEB fleet going!

Im not surprised tbh about the overloading, the amount of stuff they needed to carry and the use they got would have been pretty demanding on such a small lightweight van. It was bad enough with my Transits and Sprinters trying to keep the weight down and some of the places I had to take my vans… you’d never normally try driving a big van there! I once had my first Sprinter sunk down to the back bumper in mud and had to dig it out. Nearly rolled it once by sliding sideways down a gully in a forest during a storm at night too!

These Matchbox Ford A Series vans seem plentiful enough to find a cheap one to hack about with, for an RB 4x4 recreation:

Could even use part of the luton body for that very, erm, practical load setup. Indeed, the passenger cab is so agriculturally penned, you could probably use some left over luton body for that, too!

Just ordered some spray paint in what looks like a close shade for the green on my SEB fleet, the white stripe I should have something suitable already.
Tomorrow I might have a go stripping the Commer down and getting the old paint off. The Big Bedford should be fairly straightforward to start too.
The Matchbox CF2 will need some roof modifications so I might do that one later when I’ve got access to more tools, filler etc. it’ll need a roof rack making up too. This one and Big Bedford will need a suspension lift so I’ll have a look how best to do that. Then it’s just waiting for the little Soviet bread van to arrive before that gets stripped and loses a couple of its windows!
Oh what fun!😅

The darkest hour is just before dawn, as they say...

And yes, it's dark.

And wet.

And pretty blowy too.

Quite a bit of deep water lying where the drains are having trouble draining.

But, if there's a sniff of tat to be had... well, you know I'll do my darnedest.

IMG_20231020_0728142.thumb.jpg.f5fc39c439452fc49e045195b8f13839.jpg

The market was surprisingly empty around the 7.30 mark - quite a few traders only just starting to get their stock out.

As ever, my chief point of interest was one specific aisle...

Ah, there we go.

Although, sadly there were no 50p Beach Bombs... in fact no 50p anything.

Trucks and other assorted commercials were up for grabs at a tenner each; the 1/76 Oxford Diecast Scania artic in local McBurney Transport livery caught my eye, but I'm not sure collecting these is a path I want to go down just yet...

IMG_20231020_0729442.thumb.jpg.36ad77d1101aba9841ffd01182e864bc.jpg

Older stuff was also in evidence, at a fiver a go, but this seems to be mostly the dregs from last week, plus some other items we've seen previously.

Mostly crude repaints and other, rather down-at-heel examples, mind.

I was surprised to see these Corgi repros back, though:

IMG_20231020_0730062.thumb.jpg.f95d8a5515cdc633630b30c9c5cd0aee.jpg

I thought these had all been snaffled for £15 back at the start of September, when I nabbed a red Volvo P1800 for myself.

However, these 1/43 Franklin Mint models were new...

IMG_20231020_0744562.thumb.jpg.f6efd19660d406757a07b5ee90af598f.jpg

'59 Cadillac floppytop, '55 Chevrolet sedan, Buick Skylark (?) and some species of late '40s Mercury coupe were in evidence - plus what looked to be a Harley Davidson, in 1/12 scale.

IMG_20231020_0740452.thumb.jpg.87a4724b8456e9ed5d237606a50dc048.jpg

£10 on the cars, £20 on the bike.

Our old chum Nemesis had also braved the storm, and was in ahead of me as ever.

Amongst the Franklin Mint, he'd found an early '60s Lincoln Continental convertible in a sort of turquoise (which didn't interest me all that much) and a '69 Dodge Charger in bronze with a black vinyl roof (which definitely did).

But, to the victor the spoils...

This one did intrigue me, though - what appears to be a '63 Rambler American 440 sedan:

IMG_20231020_0730462.thumb.jpg.d62fb087c02e58bdad95eaf0a081d069.jpg

I'm a sucker for opening front and rear doors.

IMG_20231020_0730572.thumb.jpg.dbc35428820d7ba4a04b668a343f874b.jpg

And the engine's pretty detailed too - not that my pics really do it justice.

Other Americana on the stall included a big ol' box of licence plates...

IMG_20231020_0752012.thumb.jpg.acad5181b69ba07f7e7d3fd1e1ba9ab4.jpg

While some other automobilia was to be found also.

What appeared to be a pull-out supplement from the Picture Post in October 1952 looks like interesting reading:

IMG_20231020_0733482.thumb.jpg.42422b75e8d600c16ca675888b95e03d.jpg

While some local publications also drew my eye, for obvious reasons:

You could probably make an accurately scaled roof rack from some of those big paper clips?

A bit of a wander round the other stalls then beckoned:

IMG_20231020_0756292.thumb.jpg.870be3f1d4d54a263143af65fca7dadb.jpg

Colin at the Irish Tat stall had been ordering up Hot Wheels premiums again.

Of all the Race Day models, the Capri's the one that interests me most, although... not quite enough to fork over a tenner.

IMG_20231020_0757122.thumb.jpg.94c2f88d80bdc81ffd1dc97bf2da3023.jpg

I was, however, able to impress* Colin by showing him how all the backing cards interlock to form a sort of continuous picture.

Standard mainlines were also in abundance, but not any I'm particularly after.

Also, some large 1/16 plastic Sprinters were new - very much toys, but pretty detailed and not bad value at £9.

A new French commercials Atlas partwork had also showed up:

Looks to be a horse carrier Citroen Type H - I'm fully expecting this to have been bought and converted into a hipster coffee-bar by next week...

Not very much at Larry's Independent Traders this week...

What looked to be a Palitoy Action Man scout car was the height of it, plus some modern Batman car things.

Meanwhile, Alan and his Emporium were conspicuously absent today:

Hmm. Wonder if he's jacked it in, baffled as to why his £8 Days Gone just aren't shifting?

Already, the pet stall next door is encroaching...

Meanwhile, Paddy's Antiques Shitshow seemed to have been invaded by sundry wild beasts...

The green car transport looks pretty interesting, what sort of period was that released in originally? I wonder if it was influenced by the wonderful bit of autoshite that was the Mercedes Renntransporter, the 106mph "high speed transporter" based on a Ponton 😎

The repro Corgi Mustang in gold and black was secured for @andrew e, and hadn't someone previously requested a blue E-Type - @flat4alfa, maybe?
