Shite in Miniature II

Well well well... despite getting all manner of dire weather warnings through to my phone about torrential rain and flood risk, it's actually quite nice out this morning.

1125773694_IMG_20230804_0746232.thumb.jpg.cc0e2c46abc32e2827fe5ab807fd86df.jpg

I wasn't in quite as early as I'd have liked, and although the market in general was quiet enough around the 7.45 mark, the Tat Stall was already fairly bunged...

And, for some reason, my phone seemed as reluctant as I was to wake up - so I'm afraid there's rather a lot of non-artistic soft focus to this morning's expedition.

Though that's not to say it wasn't worth trundling in...

I know its early in the game but if its under a fiver could you please nab the Hillman Minx?

Posted

Yup - a box of mostly-Lesney was today's number one thrill.

Although not exactly cheap-cheap, at £3 a throw there were definitely Things Worth Having.

Hillman Minx, Ford 100E van and Vauxhall Cresta E in variable conditions were amongst the first to grab my attention.

Victor F and Daimler ambulance showing some evidence of their 60+ years in the toybox, but not too bad - though the Vauxhall seems to have had some paint added and then later removed from its flanks.

A brace of okay-ish Fiat 1500s putting in an appearance...

Lots of Bedford S-types.

The big red tractor unit on the left is very similar to the smaller blue one, but had no maker's name on it - don't think it's a Lesney, though.

Also of unclear provenance was this Lesney -sized railways horse box:

1094895754_IMG_20230804_0756432.thumb.jpg.3dcd3b18be5cd9d0f827a1cdd73cefa3.jpg

Morestone, perhaps?

It's all becoming a blur, in more ways than one...

It's interesting to compare just how far Lesney managed to progress in terms of detail during their first ten years.

'50s Maserati vs '60s Ferrari - all metal means less chance of a headless driver.

Superfast era MG has been abraded; Ford GT not bad though.

Grifo and floppytop Roller are in so-so shape, though dunno if £3's maybe a touch steep for the '70s stuff.

Crane has its hook intact, and the Dodge stake truck amazingly boasts both mudflaps and no missing sections from the cratework.

Caddy bloodbox in reasonable shape, though the Dodge Wrecker has lost its boom somewhere along the way.

Later Superfast racers were quite clean, though.

Husky Bond Aston missing its roof hatch, and the villain of course, but otherwise not bad.

Once I'd finished hoking, Blokey hoofed them all out onto the top of the stall...

Slightly easier to see what's what now, in fairness.

If the Husky Bond Aston is £3 could you also please nab that? Put it on the back of the Dinky Merc Truck and I'll PM you later to settle up.

My tardiness did give me cause for much inward gnashing of teeth, as the box had been quite comprehensively Nemesis'd by the time I stumped in.

517712529_IMG_20230804_0751032.thumb.jpg.08d1043e35d22cafe684aaf57bf32afc.jpg

Daaah.

I mean, he was unfailingly polite, and in the spirit of collectors' kinship did offer me anything I fancied from his pile, as he didn't want to appear greedy.

I was genuinely touched by the gesture, especially as I've been perhaps somewhat grumpier in the past - but, to the victor the spoils.

Though I'll admit I kinda liked the yellow EFSI Mk1 Transit, and also the late version of the Lesney VW barndoor camper, with the doors still attached.

365363083_IMG_20230804_0751082.thumb.jpg.4ad1b524fd7c880b36a96090aa5c7183.jpg

The Lego VW van was an oddity too, plus the Tomica bay window bus.

1366311786_IMG_20230804_0751122.thumb.jpg.50018fc9a9cd8467ef18b1743e138a7c.jpg

Lesney Minor was an odd shade - some discussion was had as to whether it was a repaint or potentially a factory colour variation.

1511927336_IMG_20230804_0751222.thumb.jpg.b9b37a3bce54e4c76171f9ace1674586.jpg

Nemesis reckoned it was a rare shade, and he could be right.

1156552210_IMG_20230804_0751302.thumb.jpg.4939ccb61b7d1e220adc5deebd26e9ec.jpg

Zylmex Mini was another I might have thought to grab had I been first through the door - but not today.

Ah well.

Otherwise, it was the same selection as last week up top...

...with more in the box, still.

1170096304_IMG_20230804_0807532.thumb.jpg.e80ba61a579b2b3d6bcdb450b4f5e64c.jpg

Dinky Alfa racer still here, at £5.

I'm sure we've seen these Vitesse/ City commercials before:

Renault Estafette, and Smarties Morris LD150 in distressingly anachronistic paintwork.

And that was kinda it for the time being...

Austin workshop manuals for the A30 quite interesting, mind.

But, some purchases made, off I sloped...

Anything marketed as collectible will be anything but an investment. Historically the things that have ended up being crazy money in the future are common or garden stuff that ends up getting played with and the packaging chucked away. Look at the prices of boxed 70’s Superfast Drag Racing sets for an idea. They marketed the Dinky collection as being ‘getting in at the bottom’  but you couldn’t give them away now. Tens of thousands were made and 99% of them survived in old giffers flats. 😂

Exactly this. The phenomenon can be summed up in two words:

Days. Gone.

I have a Lego tanker but it’s gone banana shaped. That’s fair of the Nemisis and it’s a pretty much a consider collection he’s selected there. One Friday  I’m hoping/ will demand (!)  you send me one of those pastries out the market cafe - no diecast, just a cake please up to a £5 obviously  😂

Yes, van not bus... Things they do get confused in all the excitement...

Seemed very clean, though.

I picked up a Lego Chevrolet (?) Flatbed truck in Esso colours a few years back:

Think it went to @andrew e for a quid after a few years in the tat box wardrobe wilderness, so you may direct any begging letters in his general direction...
