Nice haul!

Matchbox DAF car transporter looks good, Matchbox Capri in hearing aid beige too.

Corgi AMC pacer. What’s the red car between the Corgi Escort and army ambulance?

I had a message from cms206 this morning that the local Bus Museum had received a donation of a 1/24 car collection.  As it happened I was already going there today for a car meet so that was good timing.

There wasn't anything particularly old and not especially cheap at a tenner each unboxed However there were a couple of 1/24 Hongwell cars which caught my attention. After checking ebay prices,  I chose this MK2 Picasso. Its quite detailed and I'm guessing it was sold in a NEX box. I like models of ordinary cars, as per my Majorette purchases yesterday.

Continuing with the ordinary beige theme, here's some thing you don't see modelled very often.

Modelled by Miniroute, a small French producer of resin cast models, it's a 1995 Citroen Jumpy (Dispatch) van.

I have an old Dinky Viva here, missing bonnet, boot and most if not all of its paint.  Now... I mentioned it on a previous occasion and someone showed interest, but I don't remember who that was, or even how long back.  We must be working in months rather than weeks.  So, if it was you, could you PM me please?  Otherwise I might have to order the bonnet and boot which are sitting on my ebay Watch List!

Let's work our way through the interesting bits, starting with Matchbox

Flying Beetle is one of the Roman Numeral series and is uncommon over here. Battered but destined for resto as I have lots of parts donors stashed away.

I initially thought this was a Super GT, but it's another of the Roman Numeral series, Black Widow, formerly Siva Spider as suggested by the tampo

A couple I picked up with you lot in mind - Trainspotter isn't perfect, broken front suspension, bowed top deck and missing a pin that stops you pulling the upper deck off the struts - paint is tidy though and it cost next to nothing

20230430_145309.thumb.jpg.f7412ac039605271886c2bafb0005bb9.jpg

Also cheap was this. Again not my thing but I'm sure someone must want a Dinky AEC single decker? One door is damaged but it's easily restorable. What the lever by the NSR wheel does I don't know

Yes its to ding the bell. These were strange things and out of scale with anything today. I was convinced of this by someone at a car boot sale who wanted mine for a pound for his kid to play with, which I agreed to at the time. Looking back, he was just a guiser. On the plus side, the last time I saw him, he no longer had his X5 and was driving a small crappy hatchback of some sort so hopefully karma got him.

On the topic of E-Types... bit of a 'then and now' comparison on how Matchbox have modelled them over the years...

1278019536_IMG_20230406_1354362.thumb.jpg.8392703be388bf781832e4feb9b87e5f.jpg

On the left is a 2018 release from the 'Coffee Cruisers' 5-pack, using the well-used 2006 casting; on the right is a Lesney mainline catalogued between 1962 and 1967.

1954189530_IMG_20230406_1354552.thumb.jpg.f18d52bfa454e27d8fc0e878f449c12c.jpg

While the original Matchbox No.32 was a strong seller over the six years it was in the main range, it was only ever available in one colour - a deep glossy red.

The Mattel version has come in nineteen different colour variations since its launch 17 years ago, last appearing in the 2021 'Exotics' 5-pack.

1732793202_IMG_20230406_1355112.thumb.jpg.79fb159f29ad51efc32f6cf6c85a3271.jpg

The grille and overriders on the Mattel are particularly neatly done.

From the front, I think the Lesney reflects the lines of the real thing more accurately - in that the E-Type fhc always looked a little top-heavy and ponderous to my eye.

The Mattel version looks a little wider and lower, the windscreen less steeply raked - maybe less accurate, but probably how the 1:1 version ought to have looked. Not dissing Malcolm Sayer's design, but I don't think the E-Type coupe looked quite as svelte as the roadster.

1928611115_IMG_20230406_1354242.thumb.jpg.f98551909c6fc96f226870f752ecd00c.jpg

I understand that toy cars tend to be modelled a little lower and wider than the real thing - since the child's-eye view tends to be from above, and models made to exact scale proportions can look weirdly skinny seen from a top angle.

Mind you, this was another casting produced by the late lamented Mattel supremo Ryu Asada - so it makes sense that it's pretty good.

The door lines on the older version stand out in profile, while the newer version has them cut in to the body - something Matchbox seemed to change over to in the Superfast era.

1771934395_IMG_20230406_1355352.thumb.jpg.eca788463b0f8133a39e8cf04e5109ef.jpg

It's curious how little detail the Lesney incorporates on the back panel - no lights, and only a vague dip to suggest where the bumper meets the bodywork. A slight bit of burring to the edge of the bumper is a departure from the crispness of most Lesney toys of this era  displayed - though, if we're being kind, maybe the stylised nature helps to accentuate the overall lithe design of the E-Type.

The Mattel, by contrast, is pretty awesome. I especially appreciate the effort made to apply two different colours to the rear lights, plus the twin exhaust pipes (moulded as part of the base).

1496122027_IMG_20230406_1356022.thumb.jpg.265fe70fe31e9b2340c0ef3502a5ddd9.jpg

Detail underneath wasn't really a concern for Lesney back then, so it's not really a fair comparison.

But at the same time, the wheels look rather more proportionate on the older model than the enormously wide ones fitted to the newer one. The pale grey tyres on the Lesney are a slightly incongruous choice, though common enough in the Matchbox range at this time.

298265891_IMG_20230406_1354192.thumb.jpg.9b14e46dd779c0f9dd81f5d2ebc01756.jpg

So which one's best?

Well, the detailing on the Mattel-era car is admittedly superb on such a small, mass-produced toy. And the Asada casting is truly masterful.

But there's something about the original that just edges it - maybe not technically, but arriving as it did on toyshop shelves just a few months after the launch of the real thing, it's hard not to feel a thrill of holding such a piece of automotive history.

So I'm gonna have to say that I still prefer the Lesney.

I had an interesting weekend relating to small shite.....

IMG_4699.thumb.JPG.06ed14993d7bba4347648a54cd7b1e99.JPG

Got this lot yesterday. Impala from Co-Op, the rest Morrisons at £1.72 each. Not sure why I got two Thunderbirds, other than it completes the set with the two I already have. GTX was because last week's stocktake revealed I don't have very much Mopar.

Then I got these at a local Japanese car show today:

IMG_4799.thumb.JPG.0ebc557281a970199b760797e879ebd5.JPG

Adequately funded by doing this:

IMG_4706edit.thumb.jpg.406f52127417cb8e2e666d7f94c9ce7b.jpg

I sold some stuff! Managed to take £225 on surplus/duplicate kits. Master SL and I knocked together the shelves to display some finished kits which I think helped create a bit of interest.

Many of the buyers were perhaps half my age, both male and female, and not one of them wanted to chip me down on the price - it was all a far cry from a toy fair or traditional autojumble. The couple selling HWs said much the same thing and I was happy to put a bit of my proceeds their way.

Posted

Went to my 2nd Toy fair today, met my BIL & SIL who are train set enthusiasts, but they cramped my style as there weren't many train sets or the wrong type or something haha!

Mrs Concern bought these for the summerhouse

IMG_6618.thumb.JPG.cba31bfed784ae52b8e8cba476bbfc78.JPG

The Dinky caravan is really nice, but missing door and very dirty on top

She also got these for daughter who likes to put nic nacs on a printers block thing fixed to the wall

IMG_6619.thumb.JPG.8e83a4380e7b84ad7113942c24d96a0f.JPG

The (Corgi?) tyre rack is nice so I may pinch it!

I got this for £5 which I thought was ok and I'd been wanting one for a while

IMG_6620.thumb.JPG.b54af5cabf9d6beeca8be236f231dd6c.JPG

I haven't cleaned it or anything yet

Also this

IMG_6622.thumb.JPG.52402e9394b85404e852305133f411d1.JPG

Knocked them down to £8 which sounded right, no idea what they go for, but I saw another one which was repainted for £12 on another stall

IMG_6623.thumb.JPG.103b76f6c1b30364a2eeaae3d1b528ef.JPG

IMG_6624.thumb.JPG.fe3de2df63996c7e8e50d77524f8e0f0.JPG

and spare wheel in the front

IMG_6625.thumb.JPG.16afd566c3f4275a0a8c472ed11d8060.JPG

Lastly got a scrap Corgi Capri, seller said it was a re paint, but I don't think it is. One of the A pillars slightly cracked and supension broken front and back.

IMG_6626.thumb.JPG.a8a3469c37f5eb77777d22c321b41260.JPG

However I just want the wheels so I can finish my orange Corgi Lancia to go on the Tri Deck Transporter

IMG_6617.thumb.JPG.91b2e27f75ed7ebe2c27d45ea221b7ed.JPG

I may fit the Capri with some Red Spots I have and paint it a different colour, but it wall have to go to the bottom of the pile for now.

There were lots of lovely models there, but I only seriously looked at Corgis. I did consider a Corgi Toyota 2000GT in shiny blue (fairly chipped but an intact screen for £5 and a really lovely Whizzwheels Rover 2000TC in purple for £20. Also a red Spot On Zephyr in box for £10 sounded cheap, but wasn't sure. I know not everything was a bargain as I saw at least four Matchbox KS Cougars in gold, none as nice as the one I bought recently for £5.48 including P&P and all wanted more than £10 for them.

Anyway I was pleased with my purchases even if they weren't super cheap, looking forward to giving them a wash tomorrow.

I'm currently a trifle concerned that I can't find my very tidy, (scruffily) boxed Spot On NSU Prinz, which I paid $35 for (£17.50), which I class as bargainous. Feel free to buy any boxed Spot Ons at £10, for an assured* profit on these pages!

Sadly, in the case of the NSU, it was sold by the original owner, who offloaded all his Spot Ons at the same time, thus effectively flooding the market and so seeing him net only a fraction of what I feel his careful nature deserved.

I'd have loved to have bagged the lot but only bid on a few, others of which went higher but still cheap for good condition, pre-loved Spot Ons.

I still think of the boxed Anglia 105E and Cresta that sold to someone else for $35....

Yeh well as well as the above excuses, I was being quietly hassled to get a move on by in laws and I couldn't get a signal on my phone as in the middle of no where (well Sussex) to look it up.

I do wonder now whether some joker had stuck the wrong label on it and it should have been £50 or more haha!

The main thing is I'm pleased with what I did get and looking to see when the next toy fair is!
