Looking at that picture I definitely added some stickers - including Marlboro ones, which I have a feeling Corgi would have been criticised for, even back in the early 1980s.

I got the Corgi Collector Club Magazine from 1989 to 1993 and they would nearly always show a new casting as a resin mock up months before they arrived in my local 'Gold Star' stockist. For me it added to the excitement! I remember this happened with the Saab 96 when they released the model in 1990. I really liked these as you could still spot the later versions on the road at the time. I eventually got it for Christmas that year along with the VW Type 2 bus which as also new in 1990.

I still have all those magazines in the binder you could buy back in the day!

There’s a few over the years that Matchbox got perilously close to producing various Superkings that got vetoed at the last minute, the big airport fire tender, a tow truck etc. Plus Sentron 9 that was scrapped after only a few made.

I think latterly getting companies approval was difficult, the Dodge Viper was set to be released in 1992ish but at the last moment Chrysler said no and it ended up sans windscreen and called the Sunburner.

I remember having a highly prized Blazer Rough Rider, you could smuggle one into school in a Parka pocket! I never did get one with a gear stick though.

That's a decent haul. The surfboards are almost always missing from those Hot Wheels pickups too

Real Working Rig purchased, £5 which I didn’t feel was bad given they’re much better than the Convoys were. Sadly the beaver tail wasn’t in stock so I picked up a highway maintenance truck. Review when I’ve got it out the packet...

Rough Rider with a gearstick you say? 😉

So... the REAL rig...

Quite impressed, oddly enough it’s fixed together with triangle head screws so I guess a custom would be easy. Detail much better than the Convoys as well.

Who did it worse/better:

Corgi Whizzwheels on the left, Superkings on the right.

20220407_193409.thumb.jpg.4453091cf8f383c58e6b38dd2de65b69.jpg20220407_193432.thumb.jpg.ec5427fd253a1d9dcecff12b98dff22c.jpg20220407_193446.thumb.jpg.26a4e2d8b3cac94365e68b3515aa40c7.jpg20220407_193500.thumb.jpg.2a5c9c4d29407564e3b242f48fe1cd3c.jpg

The Whizzwheels is from that weird era that the blue Mercedes is also from (which I have). There's a lot of detail on it and it looks fun to play with. Opening doors and there is a strapped down spare tyre in the boot.

The Superkings is also odd as it's also not much bigger than 1/43 scale. I think the Capri MK2 was a similar size, before they moved closer to 1/36 scale such as the 1979 Volvo 240.  Its got a bonnet that pops open using a catch underneath.  It also has good detail and looks equally fun to play with.

My opinion is that the Corgi has the edge on looks and has play value too.

It shows you just how big the toy market was in the US for matchbox and corgi as the Z cars were huge sellers there. Both are really nice toys as well. The rear badges cast into the Superking body are so delicate too.

I have a few different versions, the Superkings comes with either the more common white, or black base. Still have my black base original from the set with the Volvo estate, would love to find a really minty one eventually.

As well as the red, I have this version of the Corgi

I've heard noises that Tesco won't be selling Hot Wheels and Matchbox - might mean we get a better choice of places to find the later

What again? Cue probably 18 months of farting about then agree a painfully slow deal with some obscure retailer like Edinburgh Woollen Mills.
