Some hot Matchbox Mix G action in the Entertainer yesterday:

IMG_20250630_1343442.jpg.f5ded3167b2e84f9faa07cbc3a3c346b.jpg

Still no sign of a 7-Series, but I did find myself a Morgan, finally.

IMG_20250701_1310522.jpg.0812fd3c782f99f8d26acb37764140e8.jpg

Also another Chevelle wagon, and a boat for some reason...

Calling into a branch of The Range also revealed this big metal Hot Wheels trough chock-full of recent-ish mainlines:

IMG_20250629_1449352.jpg.9cf1e73663a79d6f240ac56c5527730d.jpg

None I was particularly after, but seems that the chain's committing to sell these in quantity so - maybe no bad thing.

They had those in the Tescotainer boxes my Mrs raided the other day, but it's a newish type so didn't interest me.

A nice 80s E28 would be great.

Looking forward to the Beetle, but I think I'll be skipping a few such as another Land Rover - I've also heard a complaint that's got a plastic base too!

If anyone doesn't want the green Mini Magnifique as they have a blue one already, then I'd be keen to buy it off of you for a bit of a profit. I'd also like a Yellow Submarine.

My childhood Magnifique was green and I still have it, but now re painted and I'd like to re experience a brand new one!

I never had the Yellow submarine, but Mrs Concern would like one for the summerhouse to compliment Hot Wheels version that @Datsuncog got for her.

Had another play around with that silicone mould making stuff today. Tried casting some wheels.
Theres certain types of truck wheels I use lots of on my custom models but this means you tend to run out of them quickly pinching them off donor models, so using one as a mould and casting them seemed a good idea to try.

IMG_7453.jpeg.a60e5e9f1228507337d6e1b49b21d204.jpeg

It actually worked pretty well! I mixed the resin a bit too thick which resulted in some big air bubbles getting stuck but as a rough tester it’s good. The tyres even clip onto the wheels exactly the same as the plastic originals.

I’ll try mixing the resin thinner next time and tamping the mould a bit to free the air bubbles. The backs are different to the original wheels where the axles push in so I’ll have to come up with something similar, shouldn’t be too hard though.

What kind of silicone did you use? I have been experimenting with playdoh but the last batch didn't go too well as the playdoh air dried and the resin reacted.

Got some 1:75 people for train sets. They don't look too bad against smaller 1:64 cars. They need painting up a bit.

It’s a two part silicone specifically for mould making.
You mix equal parts together then press the part you want to copy into it and let it set. Then just pull the original out and pour resin or whatever into it.
This is what I’ve got, but you can buy it in bigger amounts from various other brands if you need a lot.

Ive got this stuff too,

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225745141089?_skw=greenstuff+world+blue&epid=1750237974&itmmeta=01JZ58BY86HPK37YPX6KNFKEGP&hash=item348f757d61:g:GioAAOSwV4lk6JSX&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA0FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1drx41rMNbUVSRcerYo6OPIULl%2FgkotDkfbeXFL1C1IdhMidMbFH6GhUYqITmZVs3byHhD2Z4kNbAER9Mcqsogdb2k60D7iJmwXpx4UjPMUk34IO6%2BBzRXlNdSiVp%2Fk4QyixjIslHdMMxWDQspI1qqRuOToCvBL%2FvPk4JBfPi04XqHCUrr5O5CYE5H3XY2YaqZ8XbKUQ9MA58714XHEZcL8bIKus8Knc9Eq4WsycG4OYO4ZXUCaaL5wOx52RhPYoIk%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6Lkr6j5ZQ

It’s reusable plastic mould making material which you soften in hot water then use to make a mould. Once hardened it does the same as the silicone except this stuff can be melted down again and again for reuse. This stuff is better for two part moulds, apparently but I’ve not tried yet.

Yeah, I saw that claim too in the Facebook comments, but I don't think it's correct - the base on the just-released yellow #406 Land Rover is painted matt black rather than the gloss black on the earlier #417 Breakdown Truck, but still appears to be the same metal baseplate casting with the axle mounts cast in:

IMG_20250702_1246562.jpg.5e669cd07450d9a45f9d28c358902a07.jpg

Certainly the same thickness of material on both, though the non-glossy paint does look and feel different to the touch.

Maybe the unexpectedly plasticky base on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has thrown CMCu collectors for a loop?

What's that old saying, that trust is gained in drops and lost in bucketfuls...?

Casting wheels experiments continue, if anyone’s interested!

Today I’m trying the GreenStuffWorld Blue stuff mould making material.
A bit different to the silicone stuff. It comes as a slightly transparent blue bar which you dunk into hot water for 3 mins to soften.
You can cut it into chunks and join the bars together to form a lump as big as you need it. Cutting it down helps soften it quicker.

IMG_7456.jpeg.d07c32e45f2a2ff0be28727566f2cdbb.jpeg

Once it’s soft enough it becomes very squishy and pliable. I found it best to find or make something to hold it in that’s slightly bigger than the part you want to cast. I’ve seen people use Lego bricks and flat sections to do this which lets you build it to a shape too. I used two old masking tape cardboard centre rolls. It’s just to stop the blue stuff squeezing out away from the thing your moulding as you push it in. Also don’t push it so hard it goes right through the blue stuff!

IMG_7455.jpeg.665fa9e8af31768685b7666bd606c800.jpeg

Ive made two pairs of different wheels just to experiment a bit. The first two I’ve filled with Milliput epoxy putty, mixed up then gently squashed into the new moulds a bit at a time to try to avoid air pockets.

IMG_7457.jpeg.322428c86211de1fdeb9dc9ad4f43cbd.jpeg

The second pair I’ve filled with very thin resin, poured in slowly then gently poked and patted with a blunt pencil to try to dislodge any air bubbles.
I’ve also filled yesterday’s silicone moulds with thin resin to both use up the excess resin and compare how they come out.

It might take overnight for the resin to harden as it is very thin. Almost like the consistency of milk!

It’s easy to use although I would say ‘hot water’ isn’t good enough in my (limited) experience. It needs to be boiling water straight out the kettle to get the blue stuff soft enough to squash and pick up the detail of the master. The silicone picks up the detail much easier in this respect.

Im pretty sure this basic mould making will work to do what I want, I think it’s just a bit of playing around and finding what works best.

Has anyone got a donor bonnet for this? Was it plastic?

If you want to see techniques in making parts for models then this guy has many many videos on youtube. He mainly uses silicon rubber to make the moulds for small parts. On the Chrysler he make some door cards and new seat backs for the front seats. He also makes a new windscreen using UV reacting resin.

I still need a left-hand door for that Chrysler, or a donor car with one attached.

I got these £1.50 for them both from a charity shop a few months back.

I had the Corvette as a kid and loved the pull back and go motor it was off like a rocket.

I don't know what make they are. They are crap and brilliant at the same time.

Milliput is actually very good for making castings. It sets rock hard and can still be sanded, drilled and painted. I have pulled one of the wheels out of the mould already and it’s worked well. The Milliput seems to cope with small details really well. Pics tomorrow once I’ve emptied all the moulds, but I actually think the Milliput is better than the resin.

Another thing that can work well for forming the mould inside of is the plastic caps from deodorant cans or even small paint cans.
