You’ll have to make a new one now… KAHN or OVERFINCH?

I'm thinking Purdy after the shotguns, or maybe Barbour after the jackets.

The two silicone putty tins mix together to make a mould putty that you squash over/around whatever you want to duplicate, then when it’s cured you pull the original out of the mould and mix up the resin and pour it into the mould.

Should be handy if it works.
Main reason for getting it was to duplicate the grill from an IXO MAN truck to replace a RABA branded grill on a truck I made last year. I’ve just got to find the truck with the MAN grill now and pop it out.

I'd like to have a go at that, seen windows made that way too

There's some footage here of someone making stuff for an old Dinky Saab by moulding stuff from a Corgi Classics Saab. They use both silicon stuff for the smaller parts and Green Stuff Blue for body parts. Have sub-titles and captions switched on as the maker does not speak during the video but has descriptive captions.

I was looking for some other things this morning, which didn’t surface, but I did find a box full of oldies of various scales and makes. Absolutely shit loads in there, and I don’t have time to photograph all of them, but here’s a handful of bits from it.

Pair of lovely condition racing Mini’s.

IMG_6603.thumb.jpeg.41486e68d2cc496ec8e7cb1edd84f97c.jpeg

IMG_6604.thumb.jpeg.cf1a665b95c0e2f2221f7534753e7c1b.jpeg

I remember buying this Merc’s new.
Somehow I’ve managed to hang on to it all this time after most of my others were sent to my cousins kids.

IMG_6606.thumb.jpeg.da5ad03020ac0c291b0dc7df700c7512.jpeg

This was never really a favourite of mine, but bizarrely I noticed a casting difference in it today.
Dodge Daytona, nice enough but not massively memorable.

IMG_6607.thumb.jpeg.574044e830a250c3d4dcc45a982e6d1f.jpeg

Different bases though. Original made in England type then revised simplified foreign made ones.

Both types of aircraft carrier!
I know the green of the speed wheels version isn’t particularly realistic but I like it.

IMG_6610.thumb.jpeg.5cbeab3c778ed1ec606918fffdda97ce.jpeg

Early Binz that’s somehow kept its tailgate.
Not one I even remember having.

IMG_6612.thumb.jpeg.28399413f9caad8b827d09369a8dc5fd.jpeg

Early Jeep.
How this has remained complete I don’t know. They look very easily damaged.

It took me far too long to realise all the Matchbox Beetles share DNA (the Lesney ones anyway). Volks-Dragon, Dragon Wheels, Flying Bug and Sand Digger are all descended from that 1968 1500

Celica Supra is a lovely big thing; I thought I'd got a pretty good bargain when I bought one off eBay for £20 in 2019, but while it was indeed mint and boxed there were a lot of factory flaws all over it, which disappointed me at the time.

20200613_110722.thumb.jpg.3b2c83dd118865b7a495f59a25d9d2f6.jpg

20200613_110732.thumb.jpg.057a5b51457de70e78a1adf7535fbad7.jpg

Tri-colour paint masking was a trifle ambitious for Corgi, and this one suffers from quite a few blemishes where wet paint has been transferred to other parts of the car during manufacture.

While the casting isn't as rough as many coming out of the Swansea factory at the time, there's a lot of paint bubbles and blemishes spoiling what's otherwise a very commendable crack at Toyota's big six cylinder coupé. The deep sunstrip is slightly cockamamie too, irritatingly.

20200613_110805.thumb.jpg.f88dfc6da1b2ea5cebc66f0650979707.jpg

As something of a party trick, the headlights retract and then pop-up when you press down on the front wheels. Nifty.

20200613_110756.thumb.jpg.c3f31f0c90a22758a7d6b259b0c7e51d.jpg

20200613_110742.thumb.jpg.8164833ab4809979428a971acb2d84aa.jpg

Interior detail is... present. Not quite as detailed a dashboard as the Sierra - and none of the fancy digital gear that its real-life counterpart boasted - but the tip-up seats are well-moulded and even the generic Corgi steering wheel doesn't look too out of place here.

20200613_110815.thumb.jpg.4f96df275a20db0e5fecc8e7056d24a3.jpg

Unusual that this a left-hooker; I've yet to find a reason why so many Corgis of this era were LHD; even stuff you'd expect to be UK spec.

20200613_110827.thumb.jpg.3e506dd6c2a89497394ea5b807039f40.jpg

Big boot and lift-up rear shelf are present though, as is the usual oversize tow hitch.

20200613_110844.thumb.jpg.8bd4b6c71b83d22b3687c9d8f6d728d0.jpg

Base is plastic, but incorporates a reasonable amount of drivetrain and exhaust detail.

Since this model arrived in 1985, the same year that Toyota stopped building this generation of Supra, I'd hazard a guess that it was already in development from about 1982, but paused during Mettoy's financial diffs in '83/'84. The catalogue pics seem to show fairly crude wooden prototypes for both the road and racing car variants.

20200614_184035.thumb.jpg.0456c392fab21fa9750a8911ca62fdc9.jpg

20200614_184133.thumb.jpg.6fb303b76e1bc4394c1f6430a2343dee.jpg

I'd speculate that this one was launched just to get something new out the door and encourage retailers to place orders again, after the whole management buy-out thing was sorted.

I need to find some more of the 1980s Corgi catalogues, as I don't know how long this one lasted - all I can say is that it wasn't listed in the 1988 catalogue, so it didn't have a very long run. I don't ever remember seeing it on the toyshop shelves, either.

20200613_110902.thumb.jpg.2fa910e8c48ca0ef780a2ac361d756a1.jpg

Still a handsome big lump, nonetheless.

I owned one in black and gold which I owned from childhood. It was mint and boxed.

I've got a horrible feeling I sold it at some point in the 90s when I was clearing models which were either rough and rats or of no sentimental value. At least 90% of my collection survived the cull. I looked for my Supra a few years back after seeing one on here - I'd completely forgotten about them. I eventually had that sinking feeling of realising it had gone.

I've tracked them more recently on ebay but they seem to go for silly money. Are they rare? I can't quite work out why they command so much. I'd still have another, but couldn't stomach mega £££.

A tip-off from @FakeConcern led me to buying this knackered Nacoral Camaro. I'm not entirely sure about it yet, doesn't seem to have been apart yet there's gold overspray in the engine compartment. Wheels are strangely tired too, probably that odd reaction some old diecasts seem to suffer

Corgi Toyota Supra, did someone say?  Not a model I owned from new; and I don't remember seeing many on the secondhand market, in any livery.  However...

Yes it is a bit basic, The actual car was an RS1800 with squared off arches, split front bumper and boot spoiler..

Also who ever stuck the decals on made a bit of a mess of it. They have stuck the boot decal on the door, the front wind decal on the rear wing.

They are from the era when Solido only put a few decals on and the model came with a sheet to complete the livery.

Royal Aircraft Factory RE.8 | Imperial War Museums

Quote

Single-engine (Royal Aircraft Factory 4a air-cooled V12) biplane, WW1 British reconnaissance and artillery-spotting aircraft, crew of 2.

History note
This aircraft was delivered to the Royal Air Force on 25 October 1918. Test flown by Lt. Halstead for 30 minutes it was then sent to No. 1 Aircraft Acceptance Park, Coventry where it received its name 'Paddy Bird from Ceylon'. This was originally worn by a Be.2c but when this was lost in March 1916 the name became available for use on another aircraft. The name derived from an aircraft subscription scheme sponsored by The Times of Ceylon newspaper. It was despatched to France, arriving on 11 November 1918. As hostilities had just ceased it was sent back, still crated, and went into store at RAF Tadcaster. It was later transferred to RAF Cardington, from where it was retrieved in 1935 and sent to the Imperial War Museum. It was suspended from the roof of the museum shortly thereafter and stayed in this configuration until 1943 or 1944 when the building was damaged by a German bomb or V1. This caused the aircraft to fall on to an exhibit below. The museum asked the RAF to undertake repairs. This was carried out at RAF Newton in May / June 1949. The aircraft then returned to the Imperial War Museum in London where it stayed until 1974 and its transfer to Duxford. It logged a few hours flying time only. Apart from a Belgian licence-built example, preserved in the Musee Royal l'Armee in Brussels, F3556 is the only complete RE.8 in existence. Aircraft service history material held at IWM London Rare Books: Aeroplane log book ref 18(41).29 NB (to be deleted) not RE8 or R.E.8

NUB 120 is a very famous Jaguar that was driven to victory by Ian Appleyard and his wife Patricia on the 1950 Alpine Rally, winning a Coupe des Alpes.

I was looking for some other things this morning, which didn’t surface, but I did find a box full of oldies of various scales and makes. Absolutely shit loads in there, and I don’t have time to photograph all of them, but here’s a handful of bits from it.

Pair of lovely condition racing Mini’s.

I remember buying this Merc’s new.
Somehow I’ve managed to hang on to it all this time after most of my others were sent to my cousins kids.

This was never really a favourite of mine, but bizarrely I noticed a casting difference in it today.
Dodge Daytona, nice enough but not massively memorable.

Different bases though. Original made in England type then revised simplified foreign made ones.

Both types of aircraft carrier!
I know the green of the speed wheels version isn’t particularly realistic but I like it.

Early Binz that’s somehow kept its tailgate.
Not one I even remember having.

Early Jeep.
How this has remained complete I don’t know. They look very easily damaged.

Two of my favourite Matchbox castings (Merc and Dodge) there. I've said it before but that period from the mid '80s to early '90s really were Peak Matchbox for me.  (before the Tyco era!) The red Mk2 Astra, Escort cab, Mk2 Golf GTi, Merc W124, 140 and 129 SL, Saab 9000, Cavalier GSi, Nissan 300 ZX, Toyota MR2, BMW E34, and E30 Baur,  all fairly relatable cars and all in realistic colour schemes, at least in their first releases. I never saw a real one on the road at the time, but I really loved the Dodge Daytona in that first red/silver colour scheme, as it was a realistic livery, (unlike the ones that came later) and looked just like the real thing, helped by the real life example that featured in the US police series 'Hunter' at the time,

They did do some cracking castings back then. As you say, usually in normal colours too.
In all that stuff this morning but not photographed were loads of them. Saab 9000 in that metallic red, Toyota Supra in the white with side graphics, Cavalier in red, Volvo 480… another one I loved (also in that box!) was the white Mercury station wagon. Not a car you saw much if at all but very cool non the less. Oddly (to me) it came out in white then disappeared never to be seen again. Another favourite were the Ford Thunderbird Turbo coupe’s - three of those in the box! Red, blue & colour changer.
It was around that era I’d have been getting them new. I definitely remember that Mercedes knew, pretty sure it came in one of the little single vehicle boxes. Likewise the Saab 9000 which I’m sure came at a similar time.
The Saab I can remember playing with in a big pile of builders sand we had delivered for dad to lay a patio, which I drove my toy cars around making little roads up to the top of the pile! The Saab has actually had its glazing and insides stained in a funny yellow from all the wet sand!
