Anyone got a working Matchbox Motorway?

I think it’s relatively straightforward to buy the bits that goes wrong like the spring etc. There seems to be loads of NOS Matchbox Motorway stuff crop up, I think latterly a lot of it will have ended up in dark corners of toy retailers as it started to go out of fashion by the early 70’s.

I've got a Motorway & a Switch a Track, haven't got either of them working though as I don't have a transformer.Tried using a battery charger but no luck with that 🙁

I don't want anything for it,just pay postage. No idea how much that would be though?

I’d definitely be interested in it, I’m sure me and my boy would get a lot of enjoyment from that. Would you be able to get an idea of the postage cost? No rush

Second dibs on this for my lad if Rust Collector changes his mind for whatever reason.

It’s an ace set, I’ve no shame in saying I’ve spent 2 hours this afternoon playing with the set we’ve got with my youngest.

I saw a transformer the same as the one I had as a kid in a junk shop in Brighton a week or so ago. If you're interested I'll see if it's still there next time I go.

That would be great,thanks 👍

As a lad I had the corgi rocket system and cars including the “super booster” which propelled the cars around the track.

A friend had the hot wheels system and IIRC their take on it was a battery powered booster that the cars went through. I think it was built to look like a pit or garage.

Does anyone have pictures of the booster or indeed own one?

Posted

I think the Booster was the Matchbox one wasn’t it? If it wasn’t they definitely did do one, it was a sort of orange housing with some dense wheels inside covered in foam.  Presumably to propel the car faster.

OK if I see it again how much would you be prepared for me to pay? It is usually cheap in that shop, but you never can tell for sure!

You could adapt your own, if only to test

The British 240V transformer was rated 10 Volts DC at 0.4 Amps

We can see that H&M of model railway regulator fame made them for Lesney.  But I probably wouldn't use another of theirs as an alternative though as railway sets commonly ran 12 Volts at a heftier 2.5 Amps

Day 22 already, and a question - how many F's in "present"?

Actually a found a few recent/new HWs that I hadn't previously seen in person:

IMG_4812.JPG.305340153c5e3ed26a7a3f08957ede6e.JPG

HWs from Tesco/Entertainer, plus a Moving Parts Prius from Sainsbury's. Couldn't remember if I already have the latter, I suppose I'll find out when I next have a putting-away session....

Also started my next kit project, intended to be something I can get done over the Christmas/New Year break:

1:24 Monogram Triumh TR7 kit

I first built one of these as one of my very first kits, well over 40 years ago. Didn;t paint the body just hastily daubed some matt black Humbrol onto the bumpers, interior etc. It hasn't survived, although I do still have the wheels.

1:24 Monogram Triumh TR7 kit

As a kit with such a low parts count the joy is that it can be mocked-up really quickly. The floorpan has a very positive fit to the bodyshell and the interior tub locates into place nicely. Just the main bodyshell that needs painting in colour, and for that I'm looking to use Tamiya TS-35 Park Green which is fairly close to Java Green. I'll probably change the wheels. It's already been primed and I'll try and get some green onto it before Christmas so it can be drying ready to be worked-on later in the week.

I've previously built a Datsun 280Z from the same series and that was an enjoyable thing to put together.

There were a couple of Speedkings and a couple of Superkings in my auction lot, and unlike the old Dinkys, they are in better shape.

DSCF5728.JPG.e437f22678f116597c9a81b03eacfa4c.JPG

First up is a K-47 Speedkings Easy Rider. The rider has long gone and the chrome is worn badly, but I can not find a picture of another one with a yellow petrol tank. All the others I find have a red tank.

DSCF5729.JPG.c0253c329ef39ca45d0372baa6de95dc.JPG

The rear decal has some wear at the top.

DSCF5730.JPG.5fabcf039fe805f6b8e8b1d006793e4a.JPG

And the tyres show a bit of wear.

DSCF5731.JPG.04c668042fd834427d06b32e56927a16.JPG

Next up is this K-21 Speedkings Cougar Dragster.

DSCF5732.JPG.5729c51fef0d7c5c0d4d94e017336dc8.JPG

It has a few paint chips around the edges.

DSCF5733.JPG.032da94fba808edd96aa1b9bcdccec61.JPG

And some scratches on the roof, but all the decals are still in place.

DSCF5734.JPG.a240b5a576e37d7143052ddd9c6d073d.JPG

Heavy wear on the tyres suggests this has been up the strip a few times.

DSCF5735.JPG.ff439baae0e576701291985101fb410e.JPG

Next is a K-12 Superkings Scammell Mobile Crane.

DSCF5736.JPG.5c3166892b003b09a371fb885e3646ef.JPG

This look like it has had an easy life.

DSCF5737.JPG.4b1a53f6452a1af4f1449890b0dd116a.JPG

The only issue is some paint wear where the jib touches the cab.

DSCF5738.JPG.a36d6878189f7bdaf1f73da84b8eae4e.JPG

Even the wheels look fresh.

DSCF5739.JPG.ca611b93b6eb834719aa777fa2ad9f14.JPG

Finally we have a K-5 Super Kings Muir Hill Tractor and Trailer.

DSCF5740.JPG.351f29d30e5156fdb61f39c6522f832b.JPG

Again this is in great condition with very little paint loss.

DSCF5741.JPG.d4560a4a3cfb62983e04834b253c5abc.JPG

The trailer tipper operates and stays up.

DSCF5742.JPG.59bed37601ea8c4a82cd288686bfecc4.JPG

There's very little wear on the tyres but the trailer has lost the white plastic towing eye.

DSCF5743.JPG.670af686db70d3c1146085243cc02242.JPG

This ram must have been used on K-3 as well.

DSCF5744.JPG.da254b6f72f4cee34784c8d77f6fc1af.JPG

And after checking for pictures of the Muir-Hill I realised where the loose blade in the box went.

Those two are right up my street, good score on the unusual Easy Rider!

Found this pic of one with both yellow tank and forks - looks like 97% of the chrome has worn off somehow

Here's the Regular Wheels from my auction lot.

DSCF5746.JPG.fbcb6c67cff0e4620e1188dd53bbaf92.JPG

First up is this little ERF Petrol Tanker, the first No.11 in the Matcbox range.

DSCF5747.JPG.b3dee2a66674d88c84fc40c1c925ed12.JPG

According to Matchbox Fandom this red version is from 1957.

DSCF5748.JPG.4ffb38f45445dbb7c6f6a48aa945284c.JPG

Next is this old bus. At first I thought it was a Regular Wheel, but it turns out it is one of the first ever MoY models, No.2 B-Type Bus from 1956. It stayed in the range until 1962.

DSCF5749.JPG.9713d45bc3c767b0e7d2fe563d0ebe93.JPG

Unfortunately it has lost a wheel.

DSCF5750.JPG.683827bcab134cbb82c28454f64e2bd7.JPG

No.16 Scammell 9 Ton Snow Plough, whose ploughing days are over, with a No.21 Foden Concrete Truck. The concrete truck was a kind of Rolamatic, before Rolamatics were invented, with its turning mixer drum.

DSCF5755.JPG.6dbb57a37ed70f55f7a4758e3ece9d89.JPG

Next is the replacement for the Scammell, a No.16 Case Tractor, missing tracks and roof, with a No.39 Ford Tractor.

DSCF5756.JPG.d53393e09ac4b811b8976fd89efbaa33.JPG

A couple of late regular wheels with a No.37 Cattle Truck and a No.10 Pipe Truck.

DSCF5758.JPG.17e1ff8146ec3fba91b86ad842c75068.JPG

Another that went from Regular to Superfast was the No.66 Greyhound Bus.

DSCF5757.JPG.1bcdd39d470b23682dd8ec821a6bef68.JPG

Another No.16, the Super Atlantic Trailer, which was the predecessor to the Scammell Snow Plough.

DSCF5751.JPG.3efec0525463af8d31a30f61580e044a.JPG

It is just the right size for transporting a Rolls Phantom V (No.44)

DSCF5752.JPG.d626fe6db4a371b8ad2d250154112110.JPG

Early model with opening feature from 1964, also has the number plate 1287 PU.

DSCF5754.JPG.d782ed80898732a23fde8331693ad439.JPG

Here's a very flakey No.46 Mercedes 300SE.

DSCF5759.JPG.648d83ea7bc2d066a264bbcd1a375188.JPG

The roof's a bit squashed at the front.

DSCF5760.JPG.ff3cf47e78184e47cc96b93d513eb2f6.JPG

This has the Stuttgart plate S-TT 152.

DSCF5761.JPG.4fd7838581f2eda1ba4c8f4051e2f093.JPG

Finally we have a No.24 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow that looks like it's ready for a spell of banger racing.

DSCF5762.JPG.9a3d93d7e090b52877245d65f5590014.JPG

Missing an A-pillar and three tyres.

DSCF5763.JPG.9ec7ba62be665bd8d92704a518febf2e.JPG

When I looked at the boot, I thought that plate looks familiar.

DSCF5764.JPG.b1de28250d8ec3f8d7a867941e9d08a6.JPG

It is the same as the Superfast Corniche.

27470b.JPG

Then I realised something that Matchbox got wrong when the used the same boot lid on the Corniche as the Shadow, the boot on the Corniche is wrong. It should be like the one on the Polistil and not go all the way down to bumper level.

DSCF3724.JPG.b56c5d2fdfb80b1d5b19437bc5ccfe0b.JPG

Peopel say that cars are getting bigger these days, well it is nothing new. Compare the first Matchbox petrol tanker with one from the 1970s.

Well I'll be jiggered. I always thought they just lopped the roof off and extended the doors

The first coupes built in 1967 by James Young was just a 2-door Shadow body.

1967%20Rolls%20Shadow%20James%20Young%20

But the Mulliner Park Ward Coupe that followed had a swoopy body with a coke bottle effect behind the b-pillar. This was then renamed the Corniche.
