Another impulse purchase via me supporting a new toy shop that’s just opened in my local town.

The Oxford Diecast 1/76 Austin Metro. Based on the real life 1980 1.0L bought for Diana Spencer by Prince Charles. I’m not a royalist especially and I expect this car which is now in Coventry Transport Museum was just a good exemplar to base the model on.

I think it captures the shape rather well. Boggo BL cars are rather underrepresented in diecast form, with most models based on the 6R4. I quite fancy the O D Maestro to go with it.

It does capture the shape well. Early Metros always looked a bit barrell sided with wheels a bit too small & they've captured that well. I like that.

Good job... except for painting Mk2 facelift lights onto a Mk1. Bit ug.

I'd have gone for Citrine yellow paint and made a bodykitted Si.

I'd have gone for Cayman Blue for obvious reasons. Anyone spotted Matchbox's error? The base says it's a Mondeo Ghia but it can't be as it hasn't got a sunroof.

I read that Pilen did a copy of the Corgi Mini Magnifique, I'm sure @MiniMinorMk3will be along shortly to tell us the story...

If it is true I need one...

Here's a direct comparison between the Corgi Magnifique and the Pilen Mini (Cooper) 1275 GT. By the way, the Pilen is a model of the Spanish built 1275 GT that was built at the Authi factory.

It's not a bad effort for such a small scale but something about it doesn't look quite right to my eyes. It seems a bit top heavy so perhaps the glasshouse is a tad too big and the wheels too tucked under. Compared with the 3D print the windscreen especially is a lot bigger and my memory of Metros is of the screen being quite small.

Toy fair day. I almost didn't go as I was supposed to be demolishing my dad's shed, but he got the delivery dates wrong. Good job really as there was a lot to see. I came home with these

PXL_20241110_112205994.thumb.jpg.38bb45e9ecdc2b224f3eb362c31296bd.jpg

Pretty restrained for me? Yeah except just as I was leaving I stopped to dribble over two large trays of very tidy Matchbox. I was going to take just four, but came to an agreement with the seller - and took the lot!

Don't think I'll be going through them all straight away, as I'm on a job for a few days from tomorrow morning. Hopefully by next weekend I'll have them catalogued

Nice!

Ive got one of those big Triang BMC trucks here somewhere waiting its turn for restoring. They’re an impressive looking toy!

Is that an AMC Gremlin I can see there too? Green in its box.

That Triang, and most of the loose cars were 50p each. I wasn't leaving it behind at that price.

The AMC came from a seller with lots of oddities, I could have bought various other things but was trying be restrained! Here are some pics I took today

Here's my most recent Pilen list. Without comparing some of the castings directly I can't be certain about some but I think this is pretty accurate as to the source of their castings.

Screenshot2024-11-10at12_25_48.thumb.png.89429744b452ada0062254473fcfe527.png

The original castings are particularly lovely – probably the nicest mid/late-70s toys out there when all the other companies were in full-on cost-cutting mode. The remakes are usually better quality than the prototypes, too, as they all have accurate wheels and really nice colour schemes. The one downside for collectors I guess is the fairly limited colour pallete – quite a few were only ever produced in one colour from what I can tell so there isn't much variety.

Here are my two most recent buys, both ex-French Dinky

The CX has been touched in with a bit of detailling but it actually looks quite neat. I love the wheel castings which pretty accurately denote it as a 1976 Pallas (iirc). I recently packed most of my diecast stuff away in boxes but I've kept the Pilens out as I like them so much.

Pretty sure the 1st BTCC Mondeos were badged as Ghias, but obviously a race car wouldn't have a sunroof. It wouldn't have had 5 seats either though 🤪

The same with all those late French Dinky castings which were actually made in Spain by Pilen... the last gasp before Dinky basically collapsed and was reorganised making horrible Bedford CFs and whatnot. They're all quite rare and expensive, but the Pilen-branded versions which carried on afterwards are identical and relatively affordable.
