Purchases. First up, Kidco '36 Ford Coupe. Cardboard envelope did not do a good job of protecting the blister

Yes, the plastic van that hides a plastic copy of the Matchbox Sand Digger inside - an Impulse Pinch Popper to give it its proper name.

I had the black bug when I was a kid and always remembered it despite my original being long gone. It probably came from a jumble sale, I knew it was a Sand Digger at the time but had no other info. Took a long time to work out what it was and find both parts.

Now I just need the red van which I'm assuming exists due to this

I'd be interested in the camper trailer pic one top left white with green canopy & the black/white trailer to it's right Infront of the double deck car transporter.

Not sure as the corgi is a 2 door, I think the 1/32ish scale one is based on that.

I'm missing the fire chief version.

There's that on a jam sandwich one, a yellow civvy one & a red fire chief version.

Newest luck toys I've seen is the MK3 escort XR3.

I spy a few Majorette things, but the ones I'd be interested in are the blue trailer in the top pic, Elf combo in the second one and that wonderful Rodeo truck in the last one.

On the subject of Majorette, in some kind of bid to sort mine out and work out what I had I emptied various cabinets and boxes and ended up with this:

They certainly made the most of some truck castings. Quite a few versions of the Saviem, Scania and Mercedes, for example.

So am I the only one enlarging these pics to see what's there?

I won't tell Mrs Concern about the Renault 25 (?) towing the inflatable boat. What is the blue car with a red kayak on tow just behind the XM? An Alpine?

Also didn't spot a Ritmo/Strada, have I missed it?

Mrs Concern has this one

Yes on the 25, yes on the Alpine (well, a Simca/Chrysler 1308 but same thing), and no I don't have the Ritmo nor that trailer - Mrs Concern is lucky!

Yes the pre-order model shows it as the sole RHD variation, quite likely would re-use the mould for later variation X releases though?  Depending on how well the range sells, I expect.

Reflecting on my outburst here last week, coveting the Politoys Maserati Quattroporte and its many opening parts, I remembered that although I didn't have a Dinky Ford Zodiac, I had the next best thing.

One of these!

Screenshot_20231003_214527_Gallery.thumb.jpg.4dc8e3a3ecb9593cae50fe995c731047.jpg

As featured once in a 90's swimming pool, it's the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. Like the Zodiac, this rendition is also a Dinky. Shown here in the ubiquitous Dinky Metallic Red of the late 60's onwards.

Screenshot_20231003_214607_Gallery.thumb.jpg.9f11ce9eafd2e0f4784b94aac6ba72aa.jpg

And like the Quattroporte and Zodiac, it's opening parts are plentiful.

Screenshot_20231003_214435_Gallery.thumb.jpg.64f1bc271d52ca721955d5385d9dc1d0.jpg

The boot space swallows a generous load of buttons/currants/plasticine and other playtime detritus.

Screenshot_20231003_214415_Gallery.thumb.jpg.ed39979416f6a02f867d3e8fb38b0196.jpg

Partly opened windows on all doors is a nice touch. Dash and steering wheel trump the Gama Consul effort but that's an unfeasibly low benchmark. Still, the scale and positioning of the steering wheel is likely quite accurate, I'd imagine.

Screenshot_20231003_214446_Gallery.thumb.jpg.3b203194b387dfdac358df0006c19cd6.jpg

I'll award a healthy 7/10 for underbonnet rendition here, as the single piece casting has a lot of detail.

Screenshot_20231003_214721_Gallery.thumb.jpg.1743aee2fe2b605d63acb2c33ba9187d.jpg

Another added bit of play value is the steered front axle, albeit centrally pivoting, a la contemporary wooden go kart at the time this was new.

Screenshot_20231003_214804_Gallery.jpg.8fbb2e587eafe1d7300bbbfa084f614c.jpg

Inevitably, this casting suffers from the 4 door opening trait, whereby the fronts need to be ajar before the rears can be opened. The RR is particularly susceptible, due to the chunkiness of the casting.

Screenshot_20231003_214506_Gallery.thumb.jpg.4c92af1d9e2e91ea5876e74f5a992481.jpg

A good stab was made at the imposing front end. The jewelled headlights really seal the deal, here.

Screenshot_20231003_214653_Gallery.thumb.jpg.a13c6583214dedbcdd52d0ee66dc1faa.jpg

At the rear, the scales of design characteristics might be a little off in places but it's a solid execution for what is first and foremost a toy.

Screenshot_20231003_214821_Gallery.thumb.jpg.30d11df6a8111dd9d03fc2206df27326.jpg

Same goes for the side profile. I wonder if slightly more tyre wall might've helped in this case? Spun wheels work well, however.

Anyway, this is a lovely bit of kit, which I picked up last year at a Sunday car boot sale, near York. Scored big the few times I visited, nabbing a few Corgis and Dinkies in the process.

I've yet to find a suitable spot for the display I want to make (it's likely worth waiting for the influx of UK arrivals next month, first....), so much of my stuff like this is boxed up in storage. I'll admit though that this is a popular candidate for closer inspection, when I fancy a delve in the diecast archives. There's something just so tactile about it!

Glad this model has had a section resurrection

It's unusual for all four side windows and mascot to be still there on a play-worn example, so likely they are just clumsy storage and  handling marks

I wondered for a while if Dinky intended to fix a faux-woodgrain sticker effort on their Shadow

IMG_0274.JPG

Corgi had a better go on their Shadow MPW and Bentley T

Steering wheel is wrong in both style and position. R-R Shadows all have two spoke wheels and the column enters at through the bottom dash pad.

They also reproduced No.6 as a 1:32 Polistil, although in the hands it seems nearer 1:30 and my example had lost its engine/trans/exhaust part.  Polistils do like to shed parts

 image.pngimage.png

Team Penske Racing sponsored by L&M Tobacco, driven by Mark Donohue #6 and George Follmer #7 for 1972.  The racing numbers were switched, presumably after a testing accident sidelined Donohue due to injury.

Solido produced a Follmer No.7 in 1:43

Solido_Porsche_9172F10_Model_Racing_Cars_7a00fa48-c8a3-4b0a-aef6-8a4065552cb7.jpg.0e3ea9ab05388895f319a6501ac1811a.jpg

Corgi also reproduced No.6 in 1:36 and actually gave you a driver figure with a RED HELMET.  Follmer ran with a predominately red helmet, Donohue white.

Lucky Toys chose to use No.8, which didn't exist but they did provide a figure with RED HELMET too.

So let's just say the figure cars are Follmer - just in case you Donohue they were

MiniChamps went to town on the Donohue #6 at 1:18 scale

porsche3.jpg

Otherwise there are a good number of both model kits and slot cars over the years, also sheets of decals produced to dress/redress a model

Donohue died in 1975.  After getting out of his crashed March apparently uninjured at Sydney, a headache developed so he visited hospital next day, where he lapsed into a coma.  RIP.

George Follmer lives on today and will be 90 in January.   He's had a Foll life.

When Penske got their hands on teh 917/30 they had changed sponsor to Sunoco. Mark Donahue drove the car in 1972 and 1973.

That Dinky Shadow really has some presence. I loved Rollers as a lad and this would have very effectively recreated many grand scenes trundling majestically along a tabletop! I was given the Camargue for Christmas 1988 and I had never seen a model one before, just a few pictures of a real one in my David Bellamy I spy Cars book. So I was amazed for weeks on end when I opened it at just how many bits of detail it had. I still admire it now!

They are really nice, those Dinky Silver Shadows. I’ve got the blue version.

Theyre pretty hefty too. If you threw one at one of your mates (kids!?!) you’d probably knock them straight out!

I’m dubious as to whether it actually does still exist in fairness. If it did they’d have either restored it or some photos would have come out. My thoughts are it exists in the form of a few battered number plates and a tin VIN plate, the rest will have dissolved years ago.
