Went to have some work done on the Justy today, an old friend of mine is an ace mechanic, compulsive horder and part time scrap dealer- he had some interesting chod, a lot of which seems to be a lot newer than my everyday cars.

Tidy looking punto is rotten..

03 plate? thats practically new!! shagged engine though

Buried Treasure-this P6 has been calling out to me for a long time. Unusual sutuation that the body is amazingly good but has a mullered engine. I'm thinking about it..

P6 leather interior

BMW 320i convertible is tidy and not a breaker, needs nothing but some paint where its been polished to death

A very straight Golf, T plate, again with shagged engine

also a shed full of MGB GTs in various states of shiteyness

That Rover has the potential to be GURT LUSH, get it bought.

Why oh why did VW allow people to take that golden puke coloured paint? Tis rancid!

Posted

It is unnerving when most cars in the yard are younger than your own!

The golf- clear rear clusters, window tints, and those wheels- not suprising the engine has blown as it probably been ragged to death!

Posted

Yeah that Golf has the air of "council estate wannabe drug dealer".

I bet it's had the flashy stereo and subwoofer ripped out already

You talk about the Skoda being new, to me the Punto is also a new car! Don't Fiat do a 12 year corrosion warranty now, or is the Punto too old to be covered?

Posted

Surely the engine situation with that Rover isn't much of an issue. Just buy one for £50, bosh it in and off you go. It looks delightful!

Posted

Doesn't the Fabia of that age still use the 40 year old Skoda engine? They're indestructible as long as the oil is changed.

Posted

skoda is 1.4 mpi and its been cooked, body is battered to hell and not really worth doing.

If anyone knows of a good working rover p6 4 pot I'd like to know  story with the one in there is the owner took it to an apprentice mechanic at his college, to get the HG changed. said "mechanic" promptly sheared off most of the water pump and manifold studs, then when reassembling it had lots of little fiddly bits left over which he did not consider neccessary to refit. sadly, said bits were all the shims used for setting the valve clearances. it hasn't run since, we even found shims inside one of the cylinders. and some bent valves. what a nobber.

I'm sure that a good used engine from one of the many P6 specialists would get that 2000 back on the road with minimal fuss. I'd put a 2200TC lump in it :)

^As above! Get that P6 home urgently, then get on the web for a fresh motor. Should be easy enough to find for that. Looks really tidy.

Posted

Put a Pinto in it. Anything. Nobody need ever know.

How so, out of interest?

I checked my old JTD on the Doovla site earlier to find that Y903MFG was exported last August! Where on earth would a ten-year-old RHD 3-door hatch end up? Hardly the ideal choice for an east African taxi...

Younger than anything I've ever owned, that's for sure....

Definitely, that deserves saving. Not to mention highly sellable when the spring comes round and the classic market takes off again.

Exactly. GET IT BOUGHT!

agreed, though a beamer 3000 straight six would be my transplant of choice!

It may have to be a non-original engine swap if I get it..4-pot P6 engines seem to be in short supply (in my price range, anyway) I'll probably get rocks thrown at me by the owners club but I have access to a Perkins prima 2.0 diesel and 5 speed box which looks like it'd fit a treat.

Posted

What about a BOB Scorpio 24V? 204 brake and auto.... might make for a nice wee sleeper.

Posted

Wouldn't be the first with a Perkins lump. I agree though, buy it and lob ANYTHING in but the original four-pot. It wasn't Rover's best effort.

Posted

Buy it and stick the Perkins in, the owners club surely would prefer that than if it sits there for about 5 years and then gets cubed, not that their opinion is worth worrying about...

I really like the P6s but I prefer the early ones with the metal grilles. Nick Larkin has a lovely white 1964 example in this months Practical Classics.

Moved with its owner to Isle of Man/Channel Islands my best guess :)

Failing that somewhere like Malta or Cyprus? I don't know what import regulations are like in such places but there might be a decent trade in smallish stuff if tax/registration fees make it worthwhile. Seems to be a lot of ex-Japanese shopping trolleys in both of the above.

Good news for the P6, well done. I remember my uncle coming round years ago in one of these, and I can recall sinking in to the luxury rear leather seats. On a different note, as a owner of a fiat 500 I'm not too chuffed about the condition of the Punto after 12 years.

I look forward to the P6 pics....
