Watch Threads, then When the Wind Blows, and then cheer yourself up with a bit of Ghibli with the delightful "Grave of the Fireflies" - Hotaru No Haka - which MUST be watched in Japanese for the emotion in the voices, the American dub sounds like 10 year olds reading a play in class by comparison.

Yes, 'Grave of the Fireflies' is a special movie - either in Japanese or dubbed.

Mind you, pretty much all the Ghibli stuff is fabulous.

I love WTWB. The way it drags you in with the cuddly Briggs style, then leaves you totally wiped out at the end.

I once persuaded Mrs_Duke to watch GOTF with me - she didn't speak to me for rather a long time afterwards. My DVD doesn't have a Jap/subtitle option, annoyingly - although the US dub is still quite powerful thanks to the awesome visuals.

I still have some of the tins (and one, tin with sweets in). You could get them for a while. Everytime a friend mentioned they'd seen the film, they'd be presented with a tin of sweets.

Edit: If you ever need a similar period of silence from Mrs_Duke I'll post a tin over, you can fill it with her favourite sweets for added emotive effect.

Never actually watched Threads but did WTWB. Grim stuff. Reminds when in the Merchant Navy we had to do NBC warfare training over at the RN shore base in Liverpool. That was grim, very grim indeed.

In non-film news:

N/S wing mirror to fit Renault 5 '85-'96.

£Free + post or collect from Coventry CV2. Cobweb included. I also have the O/S mirror but it has no glass.

Be quick before it goes in the bin!

NIce reminder!

I have some Alfa 156 bits free to anyone who wants to pick them up.

One passenger mirror in decent condition (black paint mostly there)
One driver mirror with paint loss/oxidisation

Both mirrors have good glass and motors from memory.

Spare wheel insert with tools in
Bag with door switches

I've also got a driver's seat and rear seat base & back but I'd like something for those - black/blueish "Momo leater" but they were all Momo leather, weren't they?

Thi seems to be the place for getting rid of magazines.

Last 2 years of Classic and Sportscar, I have a subscription but don't know why I'm keeping them once read, space is enough of a problem for the really old crap I want to keep forever.

Collection from Milton Keynes (2 min from M1 J14) or can deliver or arrange meet on routes to major London airports as I'm usually at one or the other a few times each day.

No rush, but they are going into the boot of a car until too damp to be any good, then recycle!

Pair of replacement hadrian rear arches for a Mk1 Sierra Estate and a GTi style wheel and wood gear knob for a 405

Did I mention these are for different cars, obviously.

If anyone near Lutterworth wants some old agricultural tools, I have a big box of them I bought at auction. They include lots of large sockets, spanners, a couple of air tools. Started trying to sort through them and got bored; they're free to anyone who wants to take them away. All gone!

Also a Thomas 135 Transistor Organ, in need of refurbishment (cleaned contacts, caps and earths checked) but powering up and working.

Posted

I'm not a million miles away. When could I pick up the tools? They'd be put to good use!

When do you want to? I'm about most days during the day, bring a sturdy box or two if you've got them - I'd like to make sure I haven't dropped any of my Draper screwdrivers in there but it's doubtful! There's all sorts of stuff, even huge masonry drills I'll never use.

Posted

I have a big sturdy BX. If you are around in the morning (big ask, I know) I could fit it in with Hednesford - ish.

Posted

When you say morning, do you mean MORNING! LOOK AT THE SUNSHINE AND THE DEW AND ALL THE SLEEPY LAMBS! or "mornin'. Third coffee... Still not quite awake. Whaddya mean it's lunchtime?"

(Short answer is yes, I am, can be up at a good early time if I have to be. J20 M1 then a few miles towards Market Harborough and I will admire your BX a lot and probably try to swap it for a BMW when you're not looking).

Posted

!!!  ! Farm auction purchase??  Is there a Lister D ,or Hornsby engine in the bottom of the big box ?

Posted

Ha, I wish. No, just some agricultural machinery tools.

Posted

Don't do too morning! Probably be 10:30 ish or when coffee and nicotine finally kicks in. Got to be in Cannock by 12 as breakfast be calling and shiters of bent metal persuasion be gathering.

Posted

I have a pair of H4 replacement HID headlights - plug & play, the ballasts plug into the car light socket - removed from my 300CE. They were working and I was very careful when removing them. Don't fancy posting them but if anyone's hanging about near Lutterworth they're free to a good, bad or indifferent home.

Obviously if you fit them in a car which doesn't self-level or have adjusting headlights, I will look disapprovingly whilst making a cup of tea and admiring your car.

(I think they'd be very interesting in a BX - IIRC BXs use a single bulb, not dual optic, and had pretty good lights to start with).

Posted

BX uses H4, right? Dual filament halogens?

Posted

Yup. Shall I just start a bus service to your place until you've finished chucking out stuff?!

Haha! Well, you know where I am, just let me know when you're passing :)
