Hi all, I will be 17 later this month and so im in the market for something shite, not too old and not too new, anything from 1985 to about 1995 i reckon will suit. Any ideas? :)

If you aren't seriously affluent, I recommend that you go with whatever is the cheapest to insure. I've heard that some small classic cars with strong following (e.g. Morris Minor, Mini, 2CV) can be insured on a classic policy even if you're a new driver, as long as you're a club member or something.

If you are seriously affluent, a Talbot Samba Cabriolet is shite while being cute and youthful (not only is that good for being popular in teen circles- try having an executive car, even an old one, at 18 and you'll soon become friends with the entire local police force who will keep stopping you because you don't conform to their stereotypes) and having just the right amount of power...enough to keep you safe but not enough to create a lot of hairy moments.

something that's group 1 insurance. Fiat Panda ? Fiesta 950cc ?

Fiat Panda, Nissan Micra 1.0, Austin Metro 1.0/Rover Metro 1.1, Mk2 Fiesta 950, Citroen AX, Pug 106 or 205 1.1, Polos with the smallest engine.

Read an article somewhere about a suitable car for a teenage driver and apparently a 1979 Mini 850 was something like 60% cheaper than a 1.0 Corsa, suppose a lot depends on location etc but might be worth looking into.

Some cars seem even in povvo spec seem to attract boy racers and barry-boys and as a result attract an insurance weighting to match. Corsas/Novas seem in that bracket. Pandas and the ilk dont.

Have a look at what's on sale locally, compare insurance quotes on cars you like, buy the one that best suits your needs.

Hmm, we perhaps are being a tad harsh here - how many on here know of Ireland's Grand Purge of Shite? Way before our scrappage scheme, the Republic ran a scheme that was not dissimilar except that it was not the "Spanish Flu" of scrappage schemes like the UK's was, but one that removed the shonky, the unroadworthy, and the downright dangerous.

So, a lot of the type of cars that we are suggesting are possibly rarer in Ireland than they are over here.

Still... Fiat 127 903cc would be my choice!

Suzuki Alto? Or possibly Swift, with which you can point to a glamorous rally heritage. Same applies to the Skoda Estelle (which, being a proper-size 4-door saloon means that if you can stand to stay on the soft drinks, you can be your mates' designated driver forever and they will buy all your Cokes... trust me, I did it!).

Just get any car TBH, owt will do.

That's more or less what I did for many years, and it often worked! These days however, things are a bit different and insurance will take a lot of the fun out. Cheap, with a small engine, is Michael's only option really. The trick is going to be finding something that he can run, that will be interesting and preferably qualify as shite. I stand by my suggestion of Skoda Estelle.

Hi, I have a couple of thoughts on this, and should be of help as I am 19 and remember the time leading up to getting my first car at 16! I myself have a 2001 1.0 VW Polo, which in my opinion is an excellent car, but as you are looking for an '85-'95 motor... For this you would get into a '6N' model Polo, which would be a great car. I would also recommend a car which I would have loved and would provide much RWD tomfoolery - a Volvo 340. The base 1.4 would be cheap enough insurance-wise. Alternatively, what about a MkII VW Golf 1.3, or a MkIII Ford Escort 1.3? More interesting than the more modern Ka with which it shares an engine.

I think that whatever you get you will enjoy, just remember that cars such as the Citroen 2CV may well be interesting, you will have to live with the car until your ridiculous insurance rates reduce, and as such a 2CV or the like would be fairly scary on a motorway etc! Anyway, whatever you get, drive it and enjoy it! :D

Maestro 1.3? Ask Angry Dicky, he just sold one. Should be an excellent shite choice, I'd say.

I recommend a Citroen AX full of high explosive.

Failing that I'd hammer it over a Rover 800.

I have a 92 Clio Auto with a slippy gearbox you can have for scrap money if you fancy a trip up North! Reverse is perfect so it's still got plenty to give.

Micra K10?

These are ace.

I had one a few years ago, it was a 1.2LS. Mega reliable and much better to drive than you would expect.

I payed £450 for it, had it for a year, one minor service and MOT and sold it for the same price. Didn't let me down once.

I really fancy a 1.2 auto at some point.

It would be great to get a VP version. You never know, may be worth a wee bit extra if you keep it nice...

...I would buy as nice and as rust-free an example as possible, get a bit of Waxoyl underneath, and keep an interesting old car on the road!

If you can find a decent 1.0 or 1.1 AX and the insurance doesn't kill ya, that'd be my choice.

They're fun to drive, too.
