The Moog Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Driving home tonight had a bloke go into the back of the volvo. Rear quarter dented, bumper screwed and cant open tailgate as it is pushed in. I guess a T reg volvo will mean it is written off? Any idea of how much I should be looking for settlement? The real shame is that my missus had fallen for the car and loved it. She is gutted we might have to replace it.
DSdriver Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 As it was his fault you should be able to have the car put back to the condition it was in before the accident. It might be less hassle to find another car of the same age/model/condition and say you will accept this in recompense.
eddyramrod Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 That's a damned shame. Can't help you over pricing, I'm waaaaaaaaaay out of touch, but if the tailgate is bent so far it won't open, I can't see an insurance company doing anything other than write it off. If you like the car though, maybe it's worth getting a local independent garage to have a look and cost you for secondhand parts? Write it off, keep the wreckage, used tailgate, bit of paint, shazam. Wife's happy, you're happy, insurance is happy as they get to charge you more for having the nerve to repair a write-off. As long as you're ok though, that's the main thing.
The Moog Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 Car is not worth the hassle Pov spec V40 1.6 it has blanking plates a plenty. I had just new wheel bearing and carrier fitted £500 and new discs and pads fitted! Such is life. Is a grand being too cheeky? Neck is sore but then I have this flu thingy so not quite sure what is causing it. Did mention to my missus Gadgets Saab and got one of those looks ...
Guest Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Best bet for price of replacement is to scan Autotrader and Ebay. Print off the expensive one to show the insurance co how much you expect.
Felly Magic Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 If the rear quarter is duffed and the tailgate wont open, there is a 90% chance the rear floor is screwed
Cavcraft Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Best bet for price of replacement is to scan Autotrader and Ebay. Print off the expensive one to show the insurance co how much you expect. This. Also (as daft as it sounds) clean the car to within an inch of it's life and have all the receipts for work carried out to hand at the ready.
Felly Magic Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p That's a good one to start with. £1200...
scooters Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Good excuse to buy a T5 with the dosh.....obviously you'll need to use the team saab for a bit. Shame you weren't in a 940...about 6 years ago I got shunted in a 940 saloon by a bunch of AliG lads in hammersmith in thier blinged up 3 series....their car was totally fucked whereas the giffer spec 940 had a small scratch...the tow bar took out the radiator and front suspension. They were very agressive until I asked for their insurance details at which point they mumbled and went coy. Police turned up and I drove on my way watching them feel a few collars in the rear view!
Felly Magic Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 The 850/V70 mk1 were the last true Volvos to be honest. Things went downhill with the Renault 19 based 4 series, and the original S & V 40s which were a reclothed Mitsubishi 'Lack of' Carisma. I remember having a late Carisma as a works hack. It was made from tin so thin you could read through it, and it had very un Japanese crap electrics, and poor build.
The Moog Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 To be fair blokes kangoo was smashed in and volvo is barely scratched. i think it is more the fact it has been hit at an angle which has caused the grief. Will get pics up. Got Insginia turning up as a hire car this afternoon. Cheers for Autotrader link. It fits into the Scootest Tool Category so not sorry to see it go. Strangely gf is. Suggestions of Saab and also my mates mulitplier have been met with stoney stares. Apparently I need to find something with a) bit of class easy to drive c)cost £0 to run Waits for CAVCRAFT latest offers email to come out!

I can vouch for this as effective. 99% it will be a cat C write regardless, but they might let you have it back?
danthecapriman Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Shame about the car, but good nobody was hurt. I had a twat in a pug 607 drive into the back of my 740 saloon a few years ago, I remember feeling the thump and seeing bits of plastic/glass flying up in my rear view mirror and thinking 'oh crap my car!' I got out to have a look and needent have worried, scuffed bumper, cracked rear light lense and a black mark on the paint! His 54 plate 607 was totalled, front end caved in, wing bent, sill bent, passenger front door wouldnt open etc etc! The guy was a total dick too, as soon as he got out he started shouting and got in my face! I really layed into him shouting, swearing and threatening him to get out of my face and funnily enough he soon realised I wasnt going to take the blame or take his shit and backed down!Still, his car was wasted, I fixed the light on mine with super glue, polished the scuffs away and its been fine ever since!

The arse who drove his (brand new, then) Vectra C over the front corner of my XM on his way into the ditch - having come round a blind corner on a country lane on my side at 40+mph - also tried to shout the odds. He soon STFU when I heaved myself out of the slightly scratched Cit (I am a quiet fella but not small, and dangerous when roused). His shiny new motor was bollocksed. I left him to it...

The Moog Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 So I have got a insignia. First thoughts are is that it is trying so hard to be a merc. Even gf went from initial impressedness to mentioning how plasticky it felt Horrible harsh ride on huge alloys don't help. dizzler engine is ok. It is one huuuge bitch though. Having no front bumper so to speak I am paranoid about scratching it. Need to get some shite in my life. Seen audi 80 up the road from me. 1.8 8v any good? Although might use chance to get an alfa
dollywobbler Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 How about the 166 Lusso that's for sale on here? See news thread. WIN!
The Moog Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 3.0 will kill that deal dead ... missus has mentioned petrol xantia but looking around they have all disappeared! Use to be able to pick up a good un for £400 Oh mentioned the Cavcraft offering and got another load of abuse about if she has to drive something it has to have some cred Pics to see the OMG chaos damage Pics make it look not bad but has bent bumper, put a dent in the rear quarter and cant open the boot at all.
Felly Magic Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I would say there is deffo a kink in the floorpan then. I remember from when I was in the trade, a Skoda Favorit came into the bodyshop that had been punted square on up the backside. Damage looked minimal, but like yours, the boot wouldn't budge. There were minor creases in both rear wings of it. Once it was in the air, you could see the crease in the floor.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 If thats bent anything ‘structural’ i’ll eat my hat. I would just carry on using it! I bet the boot will come open with a bit of light violence, might need a catch re-adjusting or the mechanism might have got damaged by the shock.
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Petrol Xantia? I can do one better. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p
catsinthewelder Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I realise that the pics make it look better than it is but I would just try and make the boot functional then keep using it. Can you climb into the boot from the back seat and access catch mechanism bits from there? It would be nice if a none fault accident claim didn't affect you're insurance premium but we all know this is not the case
The Moog Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Had another poke around last night. Boot shut lines on right hand side is fine, left hand side is non existent. Unerneath there is a crease in the floorpan. The bumper has sprung back into shape which is hiding it all. It looks like the car took the full whack on the back left corner above the bumper. Tried forcing the boot open and it is a no go. It honestly not worth saving to be fair.
Felly Magic Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I had a feeling this would be the case. That is the trouble with polycarbonate/ABS bumpers. They can hide horrors. It is going to be a total loss. This is one case where I hate being right.
cobblers Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Shame to scrap a car that works - is there no way of bodging it, keeping the car and spending the payout on toblerones and guinness? Inspired by the thread title:
Lankytim Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 A porta-power and a few bits of wood would sort that. Probably a sledgehammer too.
Felly Magic Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 To straighten it, it will need jigging. Get a whiplash claim in. The Ovlov will be a write off, no matter what anyone seems to think, because as soon as insurers are involved, that's it. The OP may be able to buy the car back from the insurers, BUT it will be a major headache getting it back on the road. I would hold out for at least a bag of sand for the car, plus about £1500 for a whiplash claim.
worldofceri Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Where are you located, Mr Moog? I could do with a front bumper carrier and maybe lights (mine don't match) for my S40. If the insurers write it off and you can retain the salvage please may I be first in line for parts before you weigh it in (assuming you don't repair it)? Thanks!
sporty-shite Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Although might use chance to get an alfa Heeeelllllooooooooooo!!!! Check my sig! Oh, thanks for the tyres, BTW, forgot to mail you to say they'd arrived. Top deal!
Alexg Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Get a whiplash claim in..... I would hold out for at least a bag of sand for the car, plus about £1500 for a whiplash claim. So this is why Insurance costs are going up....
