It's superb.

Hats off to the man who can own a Rover 200 Diesel AND a DS with a hunk missing!

(squints and imagines that pick-up section with a sympathetically built fastback conversion....)

You realise that you have got a really early prototype for this idea:

LaraCroft14.JPG

Other incredible facts about the DS:

(Yes these fact have no credibility whatsoever but people will try and tell you they are true)

1. Citroen used a suspension system designed by Rolls Royce

2. The DS was the first car with inboard disc brakes

3. The DS was the first monocoque car

4. The only bit of a DS that wont rust is the glass

Whereas we all know that

1. the other way round, Rolls used the Citroen system but in a low pressure stylee

2. It wasn't Citroen but it might have been Cord in America

3. Just not true

4. The roof is fibreglass and the bonnet is aluminium but other than that correct.

edit for outrageous spelling error

Was it the early DS that has the translucent polysomethingorother roof?

yep, it was such a revolutionary idea having a plastic roof that they decided to make a feature of it and left the paint off so it was translucent. Whatever next... plastic bumpers? Ridiculous.

Man, that is some amazing purchase. Where on earth did you find it?

REsPeCTz for going on to use it as it is. You'll probably need a worn out lumberjack jacket and jeans, jack boots and an axe to keep so-called normal folk out of your way.

What a truly eccentric vehicle. With an interesting history too. Excellent purchase!

Yeah, the very early ones were more or less transparent. They had to add an inlay and \ or change the blend because the reflections through the roof proved too distracting when on a drive.

Well done Wuvuum, that is ace :D

Years back when I was into custom bikes I considered hacking a Citroen into a pickup to transport projects. Wouldn't have looked that good though.

(Don't worry, the BX is safe)

Well done Dave! I 'm glad this has been saved, and I hope it'll stay in it's original format. It could easily have been converted or broken.

Let us know when you're next having a clear out, I would have been interested in that VDP Allegro if I'd known, and no doubt you have a load of other stuff people on here would like (The 106/156/Volvo are not my kinda thing though).

/\ That looks fun, but I think I'd feel guilty writing off those lovely Alfas... :?

Took the old crate for its first proper spin today, having found a more secure location for the fuel pump than sitting on top of the LHM tank. It's a weird old thing to drive alright - the steering feels rather strange around the straight ahead point, a bit like a CX but without the self-centring, and it didn't seem to want to go in a straight line, although that was very possibly due to a combination of wet roads and about 15 psi in the front tyres... There's also a disconcerting pause when braking between hitting the brake mushroom and the brakes applying. My CX Turbo did the same thing (but worse) - I think it's probably been run low on LHM at some point and got air into the system, so I'll have to get it bled at some point. It appears to have an oil leak from somewhere, too.

Other than that it seems pretty good. Seats are comfy, gear change is very pleasant for a column shift, engine sounds healthy and pulls pretty well, and the ride is just as good as I'd hoped. Turning circle is surprisingly good for an old FWD frog too - infinitely better than a CX. The horn is a bit feeble - I'd been hoping for angry-sounding air horns, but the noise the DS makes would be more appropriate on a Honda Melody.

Never having driven another DS, I have nothing to compare this one with, but initial impression are that it is as the seller stated - a driveable DS that needs money spending on it to make it into a good one. Given what I ended up paying for it, I don't think I can reasonably begrudge throwing a few hundred quid at it to get it up to scratch.

My saloon has got air horns as well as the ordinary sort but the Safari hasn't. Its on my list though.I like the big foxtrot-oscar bleah - get out of my way sound and they are dirt cheap on ebay. I forgot to mention that the built in Safari roofrack collects water whilst parked out in the rain. It all ends up in your lap if you drive off with the window open. Not a pleasant experience but the learning curve is short.
