Thanks again Vin.

I recognised this as I've seen the film before, it's here on YouTube.

Can I just say, THANK YOU, Vin. What an amazing thread. I've just spent an hour poring through that lot and enjoyed every minute of it.

May I use one or two for a Blog on AROnline to point back here please?

/K

Glad you enjoyed it Keith. Feel free to use the pics.

The Norwich stills were particularly good, great to see all those locally-registered cars trundling around roads I know.

I thought you would find those interesting SL. There is another film from later in the decade about the future traffic planning in Bath and the closure of Norwich city centre to traffic and it's opening to pedestrians.

That's in the queue for later :)

Of double interest there then, as I frequently visited Bath in the early '90s. Look forward to seeing that one!

Another update. Another 'Look at life'.

This episode is called 'New roads for old'.

It's dated May 1959 and looks at traffic through towns and a couple of new motorway projects that are underway - namely the M1 and a new bridge over the Manchester ship canal that will replace the current (then) Transporter bridge.

I'm sure the car on the right is a Lancia. Mash took a picture of one at the NEC - it's in his thread.

Love the 'Lyons Swiss Rolls' lorry. I'm sure it's a 'Guy' possibly a Guy Otter. No idea what the american is next to the 'Seccombe' wagon.

I'll make no apology for including a few shots of the next vehicle - Due to it being 8)8)

This shabby Chinese Six looks like an ERF. I've always liked the Chinese Six wheel layout on old wagons. It's not something you see anymore. I've always wondered why it's called a Chinese Six. Does anybody know :?:

An early LAD cabbed Dodge. Can't tell what company the car transporter is, but the tractor unit is a Commer.

An Austin truck on the left I think. Shell tanker is a Scammell.

The next stills are from the bit about the St Albans by-pass and the 'London to Yorkshire' motorway - the M1.

Loving the East Kent Road Car Company touring coach driving off the ferry at Dover Docks 8)

Pawnote: I think that "Chinese" was a vernacular term back in the olden days for anything odd, 'back to front' or generally out of the ordinary ;)

That's a 'Weltkugel' Taunus, so called after the globe above its grille.

Edit: ah, zu spät!

Thanks all for filling in knowledge gaps :D

Loving these screengrabs. Top work!

I think the battered Chinese Six is a Foden DG series.

TBH, I did think it was a Foden, but the only one I could think of was the FG series and it didn't look like one of those.

I agree RML, that it is probably a DG series.

The fact that so many lorry cabs were coachbuilt by outside companies back in those days doesn't help. Especially when they have missing badges....

Pretty sure it's a Packard from about 1952-4, the side chrome suggests a Clipper.

Standard with a strange number plate set up.

I'm pretty sure this style of plate was issued to members of HM Forces serving overseas, for use on cars they bought there.

I've been working my way through these films after getting the DVD off Amazon. They are awesome - well worth the money as there are over 50 films on this edition! Fabulous stuff :D

I also got the 1960s Motor Shows films which are also brilliant as they are mostly in colour too.

Oooh, I've also found a car that still survives too!!!

I'm still enjoying these Vin so keep up the good work.

I'm very tempted to buy the DVD's myself and do some screen snaps for my Flickr, I've done a load recently from a few films (The fast lady and the Confession films) which I'll post up once i can be arsed.

I'm sure that is a shot in the motorail photos of the ill fated DP2 prototype

I think you could be right - the larger radiator grilles mark it out as different to the Deltic

These really are great, do keep 'em coming. The pair of unusual Kombis (Borgward and 'bathtub' Taunus) certainly do it for me.

I like the slightly optimistic reg plate on the Aronde, would probably be worth a fortune now but sadly it's no longer around. TK18 is on a Volvo C30 R-Design D4, whatever one of those might be

Nope. It's what became a Class 40.

So it's an Aronde then. I thought it was a Simca, but I didn't know what model. Thanks Mr B. :D

Yes, that is definitely DP2. They use more of that footage in another film (Draw the Fires - all about railway modernisation) and you can see the number clearly. It's also got the same Class 40 footage too.

No, but DP2 was built using a Deltic Bodyshell, but with a few changes. It spent quite a bit of time on the ECML.

Mind you, I thought DP2 was the predecessor to the 37. Im not as much of an anorack as I thought.

Wasnt it written off in a crash with a freight train?

DP2 was a class 50 engined Deltic and had a roofline/roofgubbins that looked far more like a class 50s as it was all built to take a different engine.

It was involved in a crash with a derailed freight train and was taken somewhere and dumped for a while eventually to be stripped of its engine which was reused in a class 50 (an scrapped quite recently) whilst the bodyshell and other parts were cut up for scrap.
