If it is, Bill Treacher (the actor concerned) didn't get credited, at least not according to IMDB. However it does mention Peter Dean, who later played Pete Beale, Arfur's brother-in-law!

 

I can tell the difference between Arfur Fowler and Pete Beale*.

Brilliant stuff! Programmes like this, Minder and Sweeney are a fantastic documentary of street scenes back then. I want to work in an East London scrapyard of 30yrs ago.

 

Enjoyed seeing a few OJC’s there, including a Honda N360/600.

 

The MLD-registered Cortina seemed familiar, quick Google suggests it’s seen action in Minder several times (doubtless Trigger will have images).

Vin - that red car you can't identify in the first series is an Alfa Guilietta , the saloon that was the basis for the 75. The car on the scrapyard truck is a Cortina Mk2 or an early Hunter.

 

Anyway, Great screen grabs, I remember watching this series on UK Gold in about 1992!

 

Did Eddie Shoesmith (sp?) the private detective played by Trevor Eve have a blue Hunter? - It got wrecked in an early episode and was replaced by a shonky yellow Cortina Mk3 estate which was the source of insults and jokes aimed at the chararcter.

Couple of personal observations:

 

Even cars that are just 4 or 5 years old look shagged! Factoid: In the seventies, the average lifespan of a car was only 11 years.

Yes, Eddie Shoestring from "Shoestring" did drive a Hunter, a K-reg saloon in a rather fetching shade of dark metallic blue. It was wrecked in the second episode of the series after being clouted by a Transit several times. It met its demise later on in the episode after rolling of a jetty into the River Severn:

I’m glad this thread has gone down well. :D

 

The response, and the fact I now know what I’m doing with screen grabs means I will have a go at some more DVDs. I’ll not bother with mainstream stuff or films/TV that have already been captured on IMCDB.

 

I have quite a few ‘Look at Life’ films and the all the British Transport Film (BTF) collections published by the BFI. There are lots of period vehicles and street scenes in these, so will be a great source of screen grabs…

 

I will probably use this thread for screen grabs. I’ll rename it when I do an update. :)

Looks to be a Mustang II Hatchback. Below picture is definitely one and they look almost identical. Top spec, for a while, was a 2.8 Cologne V6 carburettor with a manual gearbox! Sporty with a capital sport. Probably smog equipped as well for extra misery. Maybe 110 Bhp on a good day?

Indeed it was, but it was still a better place than it is now. Cars, music, TV were all better. Scrapyards were fantastic back then - and they were everywhere.

Vin - Thank you for taking the time to put these up. They are really inspiring and amazing to look at the era of when I was born. I dont think I've heard of the 'Chinese Detective' but I'll certainly be looking out for it if it ever comes up on TV (unlikely)

 

Depsiet the fact Britain did look a bit of shithole then, somehow it seemed better, a bit more natural and down to earth unlike this plasticky expensive era we have today. I'd really love to have been around (as an older, more aware adult) then.

MOTORSPORT TRIES MOTORAIL

 

This is a film I have wanted to do screengrabs of for a long time :)

 

It is an 8 minute film made by the BTF in 1969.

 

It is about the London & Torbay Motor Clubs competing for the 'Motorail Trophy' over the 4th & 5th of May 1968. The London club members are filmed travelling with their cars, by train down to Newton Abbott, and competing against the Torbay club members in a hillclimb (up Oddicombe Hill) on the first day and the time trials on the second day.
