Pete-M Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Since http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk got a bit of exposure it seems that every bloody ebay ad for anything built before 1996 has "Figures say there are only 41 of this model left so grab a rare car" type spiel attached to it. I'm guilty of a similar thing when it comes to the 604, if there were 50 odd in the UK I probably wouldn't have bothered with it, but as there are less than that I decided to save it. This lead to me thinking. Are there any mass produced* cars which were common sights not long ago but are actually extinct now? None left. Not just trim levels or obscure East African spec stuff, but cars where of the type there are none left at all. No saloons, no estates, nothing. I can't think of one. *Mass production = 5,000 or more. Stuff built before the 1950s doesn't count either. My question, my rules
dollywobbler Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I'm willing to bet that there are some 1970s Japanese cars of which there are none remaining, in the UK at least. However, I'm not willing to actually name one.
Pete-M Posted October 6, 2011 Author Posted October 6, 2011 Only need to be dead in the UK... I bet you're right about the Jap stuff, but the good Mr Bickle probably excludes plenty of examples...
warren t claim Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I lobbed a similar thread on the Practical Classics forum a couple of years ago and nobody could come up with any extinct cars. I think there may be a few model types that are missing presumed extinct, eg mk2 Escort auto with disabled option pack.
worldofceri Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 There's only two Sao Penzas left. One licensed, one SORNed. Doubt they sold anywhere near 5000 here though.
Guest Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 How well did the 1980's Dacia Denems and Dusters sell?
andrew e Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Hyundia Grandeur* used to see them everywhere* (during my L.S.D. phase). http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=hyundia+grandeur But being serious, used to see the 4x4 Scorpio/Granada everywhere in essex: http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=scorpio+4x4 http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=granda+ghia+4x4
Shep Shepherd Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I wonder if there are any Dri-Sleeve Moonrakers left?
RedSparrow Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Mitsubishi Deboniar? http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/mitsubishi_debonair_v6_24v_auto
Volksy Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Last time I looked the Fiat Fiorino van (127 Based) was extinct, and there is 1 Seat Malaga left, a XL version which I believe lives in Leeds, having seen one last year local to me.
Mash Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 As far as I know until I see actual proof of another, my 1968 Datsun 1000 is very possibly the only surviving saloon version left in the UK now though there are a couple of estates. I'm prepared to stick my neck out and say there's only one Datsun 1800 Laurel (model C30) and one Mazda 1800. There are 2 Daihatsu Compagnos.
dollywobbler Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 There are 2 Daihatsu Compagnos. Didn't a third one appear recently? A four door.
warren t claim Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 There used to be some bizarre hatchback Toyota Cressida/Corona that had a square speedo and a hatchback that was made in 1979 that surely must be MIA by now.
Mash Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 There are 2 Daihatsu Compagnos. Didn't a third one appear recently? A four door. Ooh i didn't hear about that one. There was the blue eBay one and the original owned by International Motors but a third is news to me.
chaseracer Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 How well did the 1980's Dacia Denems and Dusters sell?Well, the Denem was "very acceptable", according to the exceptionally lame advertising... The vehicles pictured here may well represent the total UK Denem sales...
Des Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Nissan Cherry Europe was rare back in the day, badged as a GTI although it had carbs, and the RWD Mitsubishi Gallant turbo that had the Starion running gear, bet the few of those are long gone.
warren t claim Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 yugo sana? cant be many/any leftI know where there's a Sana parked up. I posted the pic on here.
pompei Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I used to have a yellow Toyota Corolla coupe (KE35R) Pillarless windows were the only good thing about it. The worst car I have ever owned. Ever. Bet there are no survivors in GB.
eddyramrod Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 my 1968 Datsun 1000 Like this?Admittedly not in the UK, but at least it still exists...
HillmanImp Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Seat Malaga's. There is one for sale in Russia at the Mo, but in Britain there are the grand total of none. Which is a shame. I convinced my dad to try one when I was a kid but he thought the brakes were spongy and we got a Pug 309 instead (I think). Found it: http://www.ooyyo.ca/used-seat-Malaga-russia-novosibirsk--6789574629576654850.html IN SOVIET RUSSIA WE HAVE SALOON BASED VERSIONS OF IBIZAS WITH SYSTEM PORSCHE ENGINES!
Craig the Princess Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 The was one Alfa Arna until Q2 this yearhttp://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/al ... arna_1.2sl But no Nissan Cherry Europe survived past 2006http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=nissan+cherry+europe (If you believe How Many Left)
Pete-M Posted October 6, 2011 Author Posted October 6, 2011 Hmm, isn't there someone with two or three Cherry Europes? The Seat Malaga is a surprise. My mate Paul had one of those for years, loved it. He'll be gutted if there are none left.
Volksy Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Re the Malaga, there is one left, according to Howmanyleft. See previous post
nigel bickle Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 I know of 2 Denems, sitting in the dry in East Sussex. Ratdat has at least one Nissan Cherry Gti thingy, I've 2 66 Datsuns.
504GL Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Peugeot 203's seem to be extinct. Don't know how common they were here, but even in the 90's there were still quite a few in Western Australia
HillmanImp Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Re the Malaga, there is one left, according to Howmanyleft. See previous post Oh yeah. I was sure when I looked the other week there were none. Whoops. My bad.
Volksy Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Might be a mission to find it, I saw a silver XL at Morrisons Kirkstall last year, driven by an old giffer, so I think it's in Leeds! Did look pretty ropey though!
Cavcraft Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Last time I looked the Fiat Fiorino van (127 Based) was extinct, and there is 1 Seat Malaga left, a XL version which I believe lives in Leeds, having seen one last year local to me. I'm sure there's Fiorino van (albeit a camper version) up the road from me and there used to be near Shrewsbury a few yaers back.
