Ideally for that early 90's long term unemployed (bad back and depression guv) look

Look at that front wing repair. I love it. It's tres early for one of these, isn't it?

It's driven by a middle aged lady as a daily it seems. Not enough old bangers about these days. (the car, I mean the car).

That is what Autoshite is all about, that is simply a thing of beauty.

We had one of these Chevettes for a few months in the late 90s when I was a teen. The car was originally given to Ma_Sterlings partner after the mk1 Rover 820i we had at the time needed some work doing to it, when the Rover came back the Chevette was left to rot then outside on the pavement, so provided me and some mates a place to chill sometimes.

That's weapons-grade tat. Spot of the year for me. Nice one.

You dirty dirty girl!

porn before the watershed!

This is perfect, right down to the 'Vehicle Watch' sticker. Actually it's like someone spent a bit of time on this website and built an ideal shite-spec car to impress us all. I dream of finding something like this on the streets but I've never been that lucky...

That is hilariously shoddy. Well done whoever it is for keeping it going.

Most people (who are not on Autoshite) would get shot of it despite it being a perfectly good working car, just because it looked tatty.

GR9 Spottage. Ta Louise, and where the hell have you been hiding? Eh? Eh?

I've been doing mom-things. Still check in most days, but not much shite related happenings to report

Pah. Don't forget to take photos when you're wandering around supermarket car parks or whatever... :)

Those pics are so hot, I feel like I need to clear my browser history! Nice find!

Isn't it. Every member on here should have all three pics, full size, as their auto-signatures.

Takes me back to the early 90s...

Who else do you know who had three Chevettes in about 5 years, and all the same colour? :D The estate, UWW 92R, was easily the best of the three and could have made a decent little family car. They've all long gone now of course. The last was TKA 311T which was a total bag of shit and died in early 94.

Calendar contender picture that one, nice one Louise!

You've hit the tat motherlode! The poppy cable-tied to the front bumper is the icing on the cake :D

Amazun! Those inches of filler are impressive! Can't believe it's MOTd, gotta be an annual 'sympathy pass' for the old dear. Don't think anyone's spotted anything this good for ages. Very high quality spot indeed.

I suppose I better not spot anything ever again now!

I have to come clean though, this was spotted by my boyf, I'd told him to keep an eye out for it. I've only ever seen it while driving so have been unable to snap it.

Proper shite. My dad had one just like that when we were kids. Just as much pog wiped all over it as well :D

Utter shit - I can hear the 1256 naughty lump from here. The first ones were N reg, but P is seriously old.

I bet it drives really well too.

That is such an amazing survivor, fantastic. It ought to be put in a museum just as is. I would love to meet the owner of this fine chariot and get a bit of insight into their lifestyle.

That really is class! Just imagine that and the Strada i saw both being parked in the same street, God that would be HOT!

It doesn't even have wing mirrors, shouldn't it have a wing mirror? The tax is up next month, assuming the MOT has a similar expiry date, who knows if it'll survive?

I know what you mean Mr B. Is it just my rose-tints or did people hang on to cars much longer in the "old days" (as in about 15 years ago!! :P ) When I was little everyones granddad had an orange dolomite or a sokda or something like that. Now they have current reg-plate corsas! I remember the kids at school who were less well off rocking up in dodgy cortinas, nowadays they still seem to be new cars!

Heck even we didn't keep the Golf for more than 2 years. I imagine we'll ditch the Audi at the first sign of trouble

you should stick a not on the windscreen:

"if you ever consider getting rid of your car I would really appreciate it if you could give me a ring first as I know several dozen idiots who would travel halfway across the country to buy it from you"

Lets just check out the 'shite points' of this fine vehicle.

Your right Louise, people did keep cars for as long as they could, there was a time when you could also leave an untaxed car out on the road so I vaguely remember seeing shitey XR2is left out to pasture on the side of roads in councils estates and such. But now with the invention of buying goods on the never never, consumers being taken in by the need to 'look' successful and the Goverment internevtion with regards to taxing cars and public highways those days of keeping old chod are long gone.

Hey, maybe if you or your partner spots this car maybe you or him could leave a note, or even get talking to the owner and telling them how great and admired thier car really is, this is one that must not be lost!

I was daydreaming about this car yesterday. I decided putting it in a museum would be a rubbish idea, because it would then be just a battered Chevette in a museum and that’s not very interesting is it. If someone else bought it and restored it, it would also lose much of its appeal. What’s great about it is the condition it’s in and the fact that someone is reliant on it to get about in 2011.

Just think of any old grainy mid-80’s family photo someone might have taken of their kids laughing in a pedal car or something, on the pavement outside their council house. This very car could well be in the background of such a pic, just starting to look slightly dog-eared. Yet here we are admiring it today having spotted it on the street. Amazing. I wonder if it has been in permanent use since the 70’s, or if its spent some of its 30-odd years in a shed or something.

Its almost like the car itself is of secondary interest. The beauty of it is the combination of the car, the condition, the time/year we’re seeing it and the circumstances, i.e. its parked on the roadside, taxed, tested and insured and going about its daily business.

Louise! tell your fella if he sees it again, to stop what he’s doing for a moment and drink in the sheer joy of what he’s seeing. Its a rare moment and he should savour it, I reckon many shiters would simply be overcome by emotion if they were to encounter such a time machine/old crock casually parked on the roadside. He’s a lucky man!

In fact, he should ‘tweet’ its location so any nearby shiters can quickly go and pay homage to it like a sort of ‘shite flashmob’ affair.

Indeed. This car takes me back to when I was a kid. It was registered January 1st 1976, so something equally interesting was traded in to buy it. A rusty 1100 or a Minor, or a wanked Anglia. It saw the red hot summer of 1976 (imagine how hot the vinyl seats got) and then the snowdrifts of 1977. It possibly took it's owners to the cinema to see Star Wars or Grease, and someone now in their mid 50's could have learned to drive and pass their test in it. There is so much social history locked up in old cars.

That's why it needs a paint job and a bit of love.
