Seeing Barretts quite superb spots thread threw an interesting point at me.

 

MG Magnette. All these years I've been pronouncing it "Mag Net", but is it, in fact, supposed to be Manyette? As in Vignette is pronounced Vinyette?

 

How many other examples of frequently mis-pronounciated machines are there?

 

Vanden Plas, for example. It's Van-dun-plass, innit? (or is it?!)

 

Por-sha, or Porsh?

That's a quandry; Nee-san (nissan) is probably the correct Jap pronounciation, but you sound stupid saying it. The septics might be right.

I'm afraid I'm guilty of this, but that is how it's supposed to be said (in Germany). Clarkson etc making such an effort to say 'portia' but then calling Fiat Abarths 'a-barth' instead of 'a-bart' is infuriating. Similarly a Renault Alpine should not be pronounced the same was a Sunbeam Alpine - it's French, and it's al-peen. Grrr.

Vanden-Plas is a sore point amongst many old-car enthusiasts. Personally I pronounce it - Vanden-Plass, but I notice others have pronounced it Vanden-Plah

 

Porsche is Porsh for me, as is MG Magnette is Em Gee Mag-Net, and Nissan is, well Ni-Ssan at least thats how I read it.

 

I pronounce Dacia Dasia. I guess the correct way is Dachia. Though the first time I heard of Dacia was in Syria.

 

Funniest one I've heard of though is alot of my Arab friends calling Mitsubishi a Mistubishi

I'm not confident that the Americans are pronouncing Knee-San correctly as they get Nye-kon wrong (there is no long i in Japanese) and they also cock up Jagwaar and Mitsubooshi.

 

Regarding the Porscha thing, I know its correct as I have a few similar german products to deal with at work.

I still say Porsh and don't always pronounce the work stuff correctly depending on who I'm talking to and whether I can be arsed.

Correct pronunciation for Volkswagen is "Fawlks-vagen" (as in Ein Volk, Ein Vaterland etc). "VW" is pronounced "Fow-vey"

 

"Integrale" is "In-tay-gra-lay" NOTE: To get the correct Italian effect, you must wave your arms about.

Guillaume van den Plas was Belgian. His family spoke Flemish - therefore it is a 'Plas'.
