Cars you seem alone in disliking.

Every now and again a car comes along that is both critically acclaimed and loved by the general public. Except you!

I honestly think I'm the only person in the world that doesn't like these.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't crush every last one of them but they just leave me unmoved. I'd rather have a CX/SM/XM any day.

What are your personal dislikes?

Posted

I quite like them, but don't understand why they're held up as a beautiful car - they're a bit ugly and weird-looking, that's why I like them.

The original Mini. I'd still take one over a Bini, but that's pretty much my bottom two cars which most others seem to love.

I'd a few mates had those, when we were skint teenagers, and if I never work on another one, it'll be too soon. Hateful little rotboxes. Vampiric, hateful little rotboxes.

Give me a DS, or even an ID any day. Simple to work on, never go wrong... I love the look of them, there was nothing like them before or since. Completely batshit crazy!

Morris Minor for me. Just does nothing well unless you count breaking and rusting but inexplicably popular so I see a lot of them.

BMW and Mercedes. All of them. I've never driven one that was any better than massively disappointing. And yes, I have driven a wide selection, including commercials, over a wide spread of ages from 20+ years to brand new. I even owned a 5-series briefly. Wouldn't give you a euro for any of them, but they're more common than traffic lights! Which obviously means the entire world is wrong, as I must be right. :D

+1 on the BINI and Minor too.

^^ I annoyed a guy with one of those, he parked next to me in asda and caught me looking at the awfulness of it all and said "Nice, innit?" so I replied with "Is it a Banham?" and he stopped talking to me and went away. Sorted.

That was nice when it came out, but what followed from Audi was different sizes of the TT with different badges.

Haha, a few years ago I was 'seeing' this bird 10 years my senior (the old ones are the better ones  ). The usual thing, I was out on the town getting no luck so texted out the classic 'what you up to' message and next thing I'm being collected from outside the old cinema  Next morning shes giving me a lift home and the subject of my Metro fetsh came up, she laughed her tits off before pointing at someones drive saying 'thats what I like' - It was a Banham, she thought it was a TT  I then laughed my tits off..... she didnt believe me....

+1 on the TT. Indeed on most Audis, and VWs. I know it's looking like I have a big anti-German thing going on, but honestly, it's just coincidence that they all come from there (except the Minor, obviously).

As for the DS that started this thread: I like the shape, but it really needs a bit of re-engineering to be the car it always should have been. RX8 Wankel, with a good CVT box. That should do it!

Never really liked the DS either, reminds me of a giant slug.

The roofline just looks wrong (convertible is stunning though)

I hate those Dame Edna headlights

I have never driven any of the above, so my dislike has no basis in fact

I must admit, much as I love the DS, I don't really like driving them. It makes you feel like you've never driven a car before. Sure it's great once you get used to it, but until someone lobs me the keys and I can cover a few thousand miles in one, it's a thumbs down. Not sure I ever really enjoyed the CX experience either. Too big, too soft and floaty (certainly for Welsh mountain roads!).

Original Mini. Ours is still for sale as I hate working on it and really rather dislike driving it too.

Morris Minor. Ridiculously flimsy compared to a 2CV.

Audi Quattro. Yes, they won rallies - but your ur-Quattro didn't. It's just a fancy Volkswagen, which is a bit like a puddle with some chrome rings in it.

Ford Mustang. Worshipped by people who clearly have no idea about how a car should drive.

BMWs....

+1 Paticularly the horrid E46, I drove a few of them and hated them all. They seem to mostly driven by angry little twat poseurs who seem intent on pushing you off the road because they think they are better than you and have more right of way than anyone else. I like some older BMWs though and we're talking late 80s early 90s stuff, in paticular and up to, the E34 5-series.

I'm not a huge fan of Audis/BINIs either. Golfs dont do anything for me apart from a VR6.

Ford Capri.

Any Ford with 'RS' in the name.

All BMW's, apart from the 2002 series and early 1980's models, which have a bit of shite appeal even though they are still pretty boring.

VW Beetle and camper. Never understood the attraction.

All 'wanker chariot' VAG TDI stuff, but I suppose most people on here hate that as well.

Vectras... oh no. I'm not alone in that.

I don't understand the mindset that takes a dislike to cars because they're popular and / or sought after enough to be worth something. Mystifies me, that does.

I must admit I'm guilty of this sometimes, it's a sort of inverted snobbery isn't it. For example, maybe I need to overcome my prejudice of BMWs and just try owning one for a while and come up with my own opinion in isolation from everything else.

Ford Focus. Never driven one but cant stand the sight of them. I think they look proper ugly..

BMW 1- and 3- series. Too small for their size, plus they're usually driven by utter cocks! Bigger BMWs are alright, I had a 1996 728 and it was thoroughly satisfactory, if a bit uninspiring.

Post-1996 (or thereabouts) Mercedes. I know that a lot of people are realising how poorly-made these cars are (or at least had been until about 2007-8), but the average person still thinks very highly of them.

Morris Minors- they must've looked dated and ugly even when they were first introduced, they were nowhere near as dependable as a Beetle, 2CV or even Fiat 500, and they're still thought of as cool. Pete, I think there is a very simple reason why many people develop a dislike of cars like the Minor that become really popular without having many obvious virtues: the world would be a better place if some of the Minor love (PAEDO SCANDAL?) was diverted to Tagoras, 604s or other motahs that are (subjectively) more worthy.

VW Fox. Hateful little machine that replaced an excellent effort in that segment. New Beetle and New Scirocco, too. "4 (or is it 5?) seater" cars that are big enough to offer comfort to the passengers in the back, but have actively been designed to make them suffer. The rest of the VAG products aren't too bad actually, although they are clearly not the "world-beaters" that most people seem to think they are.

107/C1/Aygo- maybe a good idea for China, but Europe doesn't really need something that's only about 10% cheaper than a normal car but has been engineered on a Vespa budget. These awful bastards make a Corsa actually seem nice!

Morris Minors aren't obscure and unloved. BURN THEM!!!

Ford Focus. Favoured by countless people including many on here, but I just don't 'get' them. Don't like the body style, don't like the typical of it's era interior and plastics, nor the pitiful boot space or the way the rear quarters seem to rust. Like I say I know they're extremely popular but they're not for me and I've had two, both of which I detested and honestly wanted to like them too. My theory on why they're so popular is that because it's Escort Mk5/6/7 predecessor was utterly, appallingly bad that the Focus could have been a blancmange no more nails-ed to a skateboard and still been better than a Escort.

RLY! You don't see Minors racing all the way from Europe to Africa, and they didn't enjoy anywhere near the export success of the 2CV and Beetle to a lot of places with difficult road/climate conditions (ok, there was the Hindustan, but it was the only car mass-made in India and all imports were taxed to ridiculous levels). Of course, it may have been a coincidence or just poor Morris/BL marketing, but I think the engineering was also not as rugged as the others'.

Ford Focus - Early ones were horrible wedge-shaped things with poor quality interiors. The replacements were bland with cramped interiors and as for the new model - what the he'll is going on with that front end styling? They may handle well, but every one has left me feeling completely cold.

Jaguar 'E' Type - Beautiful? Not in my eyes, sorry. It looks like a skip has landed on it at speed. I've never seen the 'beauty' in this whatsoever.

Vauxhall Insignia - Bulbous looking thing with rock hard seats and rear space designed for people without heads. Not that nice to drive either, particularly the tractor-like CDTi's.

Mini & BINI - one was a diddy, bouncy rotbox and the other is an almost Focus-sized thing bought by people who know no better and like to waste lots of money.

Escort MK1 & MK2 - I've never understood the popularity in these early saloons and why people with them have so much hatred for they're superior replacements. Not that pretty to look at and most were unforgettable to drive. I know I'm completely alone here, but I rate these as the worst of the Escort bunch. As bad as the Cortina addicts who continue to spit bile at the Sierra. Odd, very odd...

Vauxhall Cavalier MK2 - Seemingly loved by everyone, I'd happily take a Sierra over one. This Cavalier just done nothing for me in most respects.

I love 80s cars, hence my name - but I really don't like the VW Golf mk 2.

The mk 1 was dainty and sleak - yet that is lost in the mk 2. Its fat and ugly. I don't even care much for the MK 2 GTi, escpecially the 4 door. Ugly and clumsy looking follow up to the wonderful mk 1 GTi.

In fact, having driven countless cars over the years id rank my friends old MK 2 Golf 1.6 driver as one of the most horrible drives of them all - with another mates G reg Jetta, which is practically the same car, down there with it.

I'd beg to differ - minors are pretty tough cars -

The reason why you don't see many if any pre 1970 British Cars in Europe is that BMC targetted the commonwealth markets with their cars - it was a captive market and don't forget that we didn't join the EC until 1967 so our exports to Europe were subect to import tax whereas France, Italy, Germany had no barriers to trade. It made economic sense for BMC to sell their cars to tne Commonwealth which, until 1967 was a far more important market to the UK than it is now. You could argue that the restrictions on UK imports to Europe had a devastating effect on the UK car industry in the long term - the captive commnwealth markets were easy pickings whereas the competition in Europe made for manufacturing excellence - check out the youtube vids of the Daf factory in the early 1970's - and compare it to what we were doing at the time. When we had to compete our manufacturing quality wasn't up to the standard.

It's all the fault of that bastard De Gaulle, he never forgave us for having to come cap in hand after France fell in 1940 and got his revenge by blocking our application to join the EU in the early 1960's - he hated Britain - ungrateful bastard after all we did.

Actually the Mk1 Golf is another I don't get. Rust like Billy-o, seats self destruct and absolutely nothing about them seems to make them better than their rivals. I do like the Morris 1000 though, they're great fun to drive, reliable and make me smile.
