DVLA -you couldnt make it up..

i received this letter from DVLA today:-

dvla056.jpg

Lets put this into context. This is a 1966 Renault Estafette, that's not seen the road since 1986. It has been at the back of my barn for many many years- and currently has no engine in it.

There is little chance of it taking to the road in the near future.

So -they now require me to

-obtain a garage receipt -confirming the engine size -when it doesnt have one..

- or an AA?RAC inspection. They'll be well familiar with a 50 year old Renault engine -wont they.. experts of course

- or, Inspection report for Insurance purposes? Its not been insured in 25 years..

- or, written confirmation from the manufacturer -for a vehicle that Renault never imported into the Uk

All at my time/expense- natch.

And -when I've done all they ask -what difference to anything will it make? Its historic -tax free- who cares what size the engine is?

Whats provoked that then do you think?

Yeah, that's a bit out of the blue of its been off the road that long.

They are obviously taking the piss. Best response is to respond in like.

computers is great for making up letterheads and stuff.

After all they started it......

Just make up your own garage (one which no longer exists) and date it to years ago.

I'd love to have the chance to reply to something as pathetic as that. I think I'd travel to Swansea to hand deliver it to the person who devised it up.

I think there has been a cock up somewhere;

Date of Liability 01 10 2011

Date of First Registration 02 07 1965

Year of Manufacture 1965

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 9999CC

CO2 Emissions Not Available

Fuel Type Petrol

Export Marker Not Applicable

Vehicle Status SORN Not Due

Vehicle Colour WHITE

Vehicle Type Approval

Your estafette must be a fairly mental ride with its nigh on 10 litre engine....

Seems a fair enough action to me if it's on the DVLA with a 9999cc engine.

Unbelievable....you have my sympathy OP, and if it is any consolation, we are all paying part of the price of this as well. I am only sorry that the chances are you will have to respond in some way at some point to this nonsense.

I think in recent decades the DVLA (and the car insurance industry for that matter) has grown into a Kafkaesque monster, on the back of peddling fears that ever more regulation is always needed to clamp down on this or that demon trying to get away with something, when all the while it is the DVLA that has been earning a nice living of the back of hard working motorists. That is the real scam. And if those who are actually affected by all this red tape had any real say in the introdution of all this bureaucratic nonsense...it would not be happening. But we don't.

(and please don't get me started on insurance having tried to register a foreign classic in the UK. No insurance beyond 14 days without a UK registration, no UK registration without insurance and an MOT, no temp insurance lasts as long as it takes to actually get the MOT in most cases....so no registration and so the nightmare goes on!!!)..

Sorry, rant over.

Frankly-I'' havent a clue. I really dont fancy exhuming it ,trailering it to an unknown ''expert'' for him to confrim its an engineless shell..

Its historic anyway -free tax -what do they care what size the engine will be?

I am approved by DVLA for providing evidence of engine size etc, would you like a letter confirming the engine size as 9999cc?

Posted

How come it's showing as SORNed if it was off the road before SORN came in? And where did the DVLA get 9999cc from in the first place?

From Bickle I think.

Is it something to do with being an import so may not have been recorded properly in the first place? I've seen a lot of Jap imports with the wrong engine size on the v5

9999cc sounds like a DVLA computer default figure for when data is not know.

I'd ignore and wait for a chase up letter. If they don't send one then case closed.

Unrelated, but today I got the V5c (new bright red style) for the C8, only its in my name not the wifes.

Now fair enough I paid for it, but I did tell the garage several times that it was to be in my wifes name, I wrote it all down for them and the insurance paperwork I gave them to tax it was also in my wifes name.

Now, whos taking bets that when I send the paperwork back to the DooVLAy, with a covering letter and the retention cert for her plates it all goes amusing fruit shaped and winds up being registered to Ted Rogers

Ted Rogers says...

I'm going from a Dusty Bin to a Rusty Bin of a C8!

If it hasn't got an engine in it, i'd send that letter straight back with a photo of an empty engine bay stapled to it.

My dads V6 laguna is down as a 29463cc!!!!!

We corrected it when he bought it,he then took the V5 in person to the DVLA office in Theale and pointed this out and it STILL came back to him with the wrong CC still a 29.5 litre V6...

My dad's blue 2001 L200 2.5TD was registered with an 1800cc engine and the colour as green. The seller was 'done' for tax fraud not long after.

The vehicle details for Y995 JSG are:

Date of Liability 01 12 2009

Date of First Registration 28 06 2001

Year of Manufacture 2001

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1800CC

CO2 Emissions Not Available

Fuel Type Heavy Oil

Export Marker Not Applicable

Vehicle Status Unlicensed

Vehicle Colour GREEN

Ask them where they got their data from. :)

It amazes me what they find to do with their computers sometimes!

They won't of course deal with customer enquiries/problems, but have time to send out this sort of thing. :(
