Allegro. Sold?

I haven't decided anything yet, but would anyone like an Allegro in murky-green? I'm thinking about needing rear belts and it could do with being somewhere it'll be looked after more. Ideally I'd still like shite, but maybe 80's/90's shite would be better for now.

Its MOT'd til oct.

Also it still smokes occassionally, I have had the valve stem seals done so I guess its rings.

I really like your Aggro. Can you not get seatbelts fitted? They can be fitted to pretty much any car and I would have thought that the Allegro might have had mounting points for rears installed?

A Maestro does seem a logical progression mind.

I have seen a Maxi with rear seat belts, so I imagine you could with an Allegro.

I don't want to spoil it though... not that I'm an originality freak but it shouldn't have rear belts. Having said that, it shouldn't have a A+ engine and manual box either... hmmmmm

Yeah, chuck some belts in the back and be the coolest mum on the street.

I love a bit of originality too, but I put safety belts in the same category as tyres. Stuff originality when it comes to safety. It's not going to detract really, especially if you fit Clunk-Clips (remember those?).

Meh, if you like the car and it keeps it on the road, I don't see a problem with making it more useable by making some practical improvements like rear seatbelts.

I remember my Grandad's Allegro. Bog spec blue 2 door, blue vinyl interior. They never let me sit in the front because it was 'safer' in the back, even though there were no belts in the back! Also my Grandma used to do a weird thing of holding the belt round her without clicking it in! Never saw the point really. I guess it was so it would look to coppers like she was wearing one without the percived discomfort!

Ah! Matts mom tends to hold the seatbelt away from her with her thumb hooked behind it, still clicked in but pulled away from her chest. I find it tres weird.

I'd have some rear belts fitted. If you like the car, why not?

Yeah for me rear seatbelts are defo not a v-sign to originality, theyre just gonna make it more usable!!! At the end of the day these old clunkers have got to be usable transport, so if you need rear belts in yours you should just bosh em in I reckon. You could even use those shite 70's Kangol ones with a pendulum in the inertia reel, that almost certainly won't lock up in an accident!!! Best of both worlds. I bet theres even some mounting points in the rear bulkhead already.

+3 on the seatbelts. Had them fitted to a Mk2 Cavalier as my kids safety is more important than some nerd's clipboard mark at a car show.

Posted

Agreed - some folk have even had them fitted in Fiat 500s even though it's a bit of a struggle to organise anchor points.

Mine has got old lap and diagonals in the front which I keep saying I'll change for inertia reels.

Yes you're all right. Its not like I'd be destroying a museum piece or anything either. I'll have to look in to it.

Quickfit sbs are the people to talk to. Not expensive for a proper job, we have used them in the past for mking old cars poglet friendly.

Re originality, I hope Pog doesn't mind me leeching this from his Photobucket:

Usability trumps originality 100% of the time.

Another vote here for Quickfit. A very helpful company, and not too far from Seth_towers conveniently.

Take the back seat out for a quick look though. I too reckon there's a high likelyhood of there being mounts from the factory. Might be plugged with little plastic screw things. My Oxford had them so I'd have thought most BL stuff did.

Volkswagens had rear seat anchor points from 1962 so BL had probably caught up by the mid 70s. They're quite easy to fit, I've put some in the VW and Land Rover and they worked fine.

And kids love old cars when they're young. When they're 15 and have to be dropped off around the corner because your car is so embarrassing, that's another matter. Make the most of it now :D

Should be available at almost any parts shop or factor (If they know where to look).

I think this may be us lot reacting to the terrible idea of you being shite-less, having reached the wonderful status of 'icky green Allegro.' At the end of the day, while it'd be ace if you could keep it, maybe you're right to change it for something else. How about a Mk1 Astra? In BROWN? Hmmmmm.

I'm just having a thoughtful day, and while I do love it, I can't really care for it like I'd like too. It was an itch and I've scratched it. I'm not in a desperate hurry to get rid though.

Don't fit rear seatbelts, they won't know.

I fitted rear belts into my Allegro a while back, although they were static belts rather than the inertia type ones- no big problem once you get the hang of them! I bought them from Halfords, although my local store sold me their last pair so they may be NLA. All the mounts are there, even the C pillar trim has a hole in the hardboard backing where the bolt goes though, you can feel it through the vinyl- I got a knife and cut a cross though the middle of it to get the shoulder mount in- Remove the rear seat and the lap belt mounts will be there with some bungs in. I think it took about an hour to fit belts to both sides.

I have seen allegros with inertia belts fitted but they have to be bolted to the parcel shelf, which is made from pretty thin metal and involves a bit of drilling i.e you are using non-original mountings which may confuse things like insurance and MOT's. I've no idea if inertia belts are available nowadays anyway.

What you want is a nice Renault Scenic.

I think Len may be plugging mine.

I may have mentioned I was hoping for £650. And it is nice... ish.
