Future Scene Tax Specials

Any completely original UK-spec Impreza 2000 Turbo will be worth an absolute fortune within this decade.

Agreed. Its great when you see one with its standard 2" ish exhasut pipe. I spot one from time to time on the school-walk. A bit like un-messed with Sierra Cosworths. All the messed about with/modded ones have probably been blown up or crashed so the stockers that were well looked after in original condition are starting to fetch big money.

Im glad E30s are going up , il keep mine a while longer then , ive kept it totally chav free even down to the radio cassette, as for the future , the Novas a good call , A sporty Focus is a good bet also , as is the Corrado ,

Any tax exempt commercial seems a good call to make some reddies in the future ,

Like any performance orientated vehicle all these Subarus, Fiesta ST's, Focus etc will get there in the end but like the humble Nova its more likely to be the original unmolested "sporty" ones that will "do the money" it's a brave soul who takes that chance now, the rest of us will look back in 10-15 years time and say "yeah they were right I should have bought one and hidden it away"

If I had any idea what was coming, I wouldn't have turned down swapping a 4 door 1300E Escort for my Chevette in 1990, scrapped 2 Acclaims and an '87 Colt, sold my 929 Estate and far too many Escorts, Cortinas Mk2,3,4 & 5 and Granadas and I would still have my 1602 "Turbo" replica.

If I can just convince my wife to keep her 4 door Skyline who knows the RWD/Jap scene tax might just kick in!

Funny the talk of E30s because there's two or three round here which are completely standard and seem to be driven by slightly sort of mentalist old blokes who've probably had them from new.

They (cars) stand out because they seem to be of that age where when you see a nice, tidy standard one you suddenly start wondering where they all went to.

I use that as a judgement on cars because if you recall how popular cars once were you remember how rare they are now and how nice they look.

Ah yes, the racing Mondeo from almost 2 decades ago that everyone has since forgotten about. The one that had its arse kicked by Alfa in 1994 after which Andy Rouse acted like a prize twat and neartly jeopardized the whole BTCC for that season.

Not one of Ford's finer moments.

Well Alfa did effectivly cheat with the whole "wing thing". TBH and IMO that was the beginning of the end for the 2.0 "Golden Era" as that meant the adoption of pukka aero kits.

The tighter braking distances made overtaking harder and the cars looked a little removed from the road goers.

My favourite season was 1993. A strong start from Schnitzer BMW, a decent showing from the Japanese manufacturers and the Mondeos pushing BMW hard after a mid-season arrival.

The Frogeyed Scorpio is the PA Cresta of the 1990s.

In years to come misguided British citizens will buy them for their americana appeal.

Shit..i just saw a fully legal estate go for 300squid..another investment opportunity lost..not

But they were within the rules - and BMW did the same thing in the seventies with the Batmobile. The spoiler blocks Alfa used were supplied as standard equipment. After the drama, they lowered the spoiler to the standard position and won anyway.

It was Andy Rouse who moaned to the FIA about the spoiler 'not being in the spirit of the regs' when he was running a fucking Mazda engine in a Mondeo - how was that fair or 'in the spirit'? He certainly lost a lot of respect with that episode and I was glad that Alfa won.

1993 was good, and John Cleland was fantastic in the works Cavaliers. Was that 1995?

Don't worry! The estates wont hold as much appeal to the sort of people who wish the lived in a country where passing a current of electricity through a black person is a good idea.

Yeah IIRC JC was champion in '95. Cavaliers were always strong, unlike the Vectras. The blocks Alfa used were standard but not fitted. IIRC they were placed in the boot of the Silverstone special edition. I agree the principal wasn't anything new though. Lancia Stratos, E46 M3 GTR, CLK GTR (GT1). All were within the rules but not in the spirit of the rules.

Mondeos were very strong in 93 but always seemed to use-up their tyres in 94 and 95 but still managed some good results. After that, they were shit.

I have a Frog-face Scorpio. It too has electric chairs fitted.

I reckon there's going to be a premium paid for good quality rust free Mk1 Tigra 1600s, and Corsa 1.6 SRi models... They fell off the road lots, and were shit, not shite, but they have a following! I would not be seen dead in one, but that's how most people ended up.

Cavalier V6 models......

Vectra Supertouring.....

Low rent Sierras in plain colours with shit interiors.. just like mine. I paid £70 for it with MOT, and it now has nothing legal about it, and I turned down a lot more than that for it recently, a lad wanted to do a "Cosseh lookylik" as his message said. I politely declined. Snigger.

Mk3 Transits!!

Also - the 205GTi. These are 25/26 years old now and I haven't seen one on the road in yonks. A minty mint one will surely be worth very strong money before long.

Already are... even the not-quite-so-mint ones. Seen the £12k one on Autotrader?

Can't see any Mondeo being collectible anything like Sierra Cosworth is/was.

But can see any pokey Focus and KA up there though.

What about pokier C2 and maybe even 207/DS3?

Posted

Any of the cars mentioned will be sought after, but not to the extent of making a mint. Look instead for the cars that will attract the 'entry fee' This has already happened with pre-66 911s and Alfa GTVs, where the earlier ones will get you into the Goodwood Revival either as a competitor or part of the scenery (or is it 'scene' :)) Look out for the Brands Hatch Revival where there will be re-runs of the classic BTCC races and any pre-95 car will not only be the ticket into a reserved car park/hospitality area but make you shedloads of money 8)

The E30 has already been boosted by the halo effect of the original M3. Wait for the same to happen to E36 M3 and see the price of an unmolested 318is rocket.

Innit.

But look at it purely from a practical point of view....

Room to cart about the mahoosive methane tanks we will need in the future to drive from a-b, or the small nuclear generator in the back to generate electricity for the motors it will need.

Actually, maybe the Tesla would be my choice. Or maybe even the G-wiz. A classic electric car for when the dino juice runs out!

Posted

The last time this came up I said Subaru Impreza and Citroen Saxo. The sporty versions will get scene taxed first, then the rest of them will follow suit.

Well done Seth! PT does already have a big following, with local and national clubs etc, so yeah, have to agree with that one. And that's without any kind of "sporting" history, without a halo model; just on merit. I still say it should always have been RWD, but even without that, the one we had was a delight and I'd certainly do it again.

Novas. I mean, unabused or properly modified ones.

Great!

if they're not rotten

Oh bugger

Sports are already there money wise.

Merit?

There's no merit in your (piss-poor) product being bought (and hideously "customised") by thick, tasteless people who can probably barely read....

Bl00dy Hope not  - Had to throw away both the 146 and 155 as they were unsaleable with those insurance groups.

There was a tipping point a few years ago, when cars finally got 'too complicated to fix'. This may, or may not, be a load of nonsense, but it might define the point for the next big scene movement.

There's so much 'retro' about now, that it's not really possible for something to be 'discovered' any more - there's precious few stones left unturned, in search of some retro cred. It will, as always, come down to the rose-tinted specs buyer. Y'know..."I had/wanted/wrote off/blah...one of those", and the thing will be niche. Therefore, by 2026, my MK1 Mondeo Ghia X - never the most common model - (and gaffa tape free), will be worth at least £25k. I can confidently predict.

Sadly, I'll sell it for that, to buy a clutch kit for whatever I'm driving then...

Funny you should say that, i binned a 145 recently, the wife was complaining (again) so i just called someone and they towed it away. Sad really but that's (my) life i guess. I am going to buy a £500 Alfa i think, 155 or 156 probably, I "need" another car and the wife will want to sell her MG ZR soon......

Of course, they'll all succumb to Pogs law and become worth fortunes 10 minutes after I flog 'em.

Early hybrids and EVs - Honda Insight, Mk1 Prius, Nissan Leaf, Vauxhall Ampera etc.

Advances in batteries/electric motors will make these a lot more easily upgradeable than contemporary petrol/diesel cars. When electric powertrain vehicles are being built in their millions, these early, quirky, low-run first-gen cars will become uber-hip.
