Autoshite Spring 2011 Day Trip Suggestions

Stondon was excellent. I missed the bubblecar museum trip, but there must be some other grim little museums that truly deserve a visit (it's a shame that Murray's on the Isle of Man isn't open for those who like motorbikes).

Suggestions below, then we can build a poll.

As mentioned in the Stondon thread - TRAM SHITE (Well Tramway and Transport Museum)

May turn out more "shit" than Shite, but i shall try take a visit to the place soon and get a picture or two.

Lifted from the website:

In addition to trams, the museum houses a collection of local buses in running order and a group of cars and motorbikes from the Baxter Collection. There is also a model railway layout and World of Motion, a real transport enthusiasts' model shop.

Other suggestions ....

Gaydon and Coventry are a good day out but I'm not sure if I'll go there again due tot he distance, especially in the Kadett, I'd do Caister Castle though in it, has it got many cars though?.

I Quote:

The Castle is currently home to the largest private collection of motor vehicles in Britain which is housed in a purpose built museum and includes many fine and rare veteran, vintage, classic, sports and touring automobiles and motorcycles.

Highlights include:

An 1893 Panhard et Levassor (the first real car in the world)

The very first Ford Fiesta off the production line

Jim Clark's Lotus

Peter Rachman's Cadillac

A Bentley Speed 6

Bugatti

The collection is complemented by a display of bicycles, horse-drawn vehicles, pedal cars and other related items.

Worth a look i suppose (Anyone live local ?)

Meet up there, then drive down to the bit from the opening credits of 'The Office'. Quality.

Haynes motor museum seems quite apt.

However, I believe it is in an uninhabited part of the country

A few people live down this way  , Near Haynes ( 2 miles or so ) theres also the Fleet air arm museum full of planeshite , I was there a week or so ago , well worth a visit if your down this way .

Haynes is a great museum c/w with its own test track which is bookable for the day although not sure how much that is .

I can find out the details of the Haynes track if you're interested, my mate's booked it before.

The museum is actually pretty good, I enjoyed it. Massive variety of stuff from proper classic supercars to hot hatches to vintage stuff to weapons-grade shite.

A+++ WOULD VISIT AGAIN

Hi,

I've been to Caister Castle motor museum a few times but not for many years, it was a regular school outing in Norfolk.

I remember it being half decent and the norfolk coast is always a nice trip out.

cheers

This is actually a very good suggestion. There are some spectacular roads going into the Trough of Bowland \ Ribble Valley which are only a short hop from Junction 33. I would be happy to arrange a tour through this area if people wanted, and we could stop for roast pigeon at the Inn At Whitwell before looping off at Preston. Peter Wheeler used to test pre production TVRs around here as well.

Is Caister Castle museum the one just off the bypass as you come into Yarmouth from Cromer?

Dunno lads, we're going to have to come to some kind of consensus on this one, because the AS membership is split geographically by quite a long distance. I've been doing way too much long distance driving at the moment and as such Gaydon is the furthest I'd want to travel for a meet if I was driving. Gaydon is still nearly 2 hours away for me though.

You *might* tempt me out to Haynes if chocolate hob nobs and some track time were available though.

Where does the idea that Hob Nobs are a treat come from? They're the kind of biscuits your mum would make you eat.

Anyway just an idea - Could we not do some sort of meet at such a location ?

I like this idea, but I do have a few reservations (helloooooo abandoned Travelodge).

Many places like these have dedicated security teams. A lot of old buildings are owned by development companies who want the land but are waiting for the paperwork to come through so that they can demolish the structures currently standing on them. While they wait to cut through the legislative red tape they employ security teams in the meantime to make sure people don't mooch around and trespass.

It would be blindly obvious to any security guard if 15 or so cars descended upon an abandoned locale. Having being gripped in the past over previous urbex transgressions, I can't see it working. The likes of 28DL manage it because they go alone or in very small groups.

I'd be up for another Q Park meet, Mouldsworth, Gaydon, anywhere like that. Or perhaps we could all rock up to Area 52 unannounced with a luton van full of OEM suspension components and brake cleaner (isopropyl alcohol for the sticker removing WIN) and 'educate' them. Perhaps with pish welding and angle grinders.

What's more important, location or attendees? I'd have thought the latter for the most part; so a rough location could be decided and then find somewhere shite to look around?
