Land Rover Shitey V8

So, here she is in all her glory. A bit shabby round the edges and still needing a fair degree of fettling, but she didn't cost the earth in Landy terms, so fair enough. New thermostat was a touch pricey at £6.50, but at least this motor factor acknowledged that my car existed, unlike Halfrauds...

I've already removed the light bar, which wasn't even wired in. The spotlamps on the front bumper aren't wired up either. Great.

Fetching side stripes. This is her better side as the driver's door doesn't fit very well.

Two-tone BROWN interior. It's a lovely place to be.

Interior's really in great condition. An abused off-road toy this clearly isn't - also backed up by the lack of ONE LIFE LIVE IT stickers.

Next jobs are to sort the power steering pump out (slight leak, many bubbles in the fluid), give her a general service, replace the oil pressure switch and think about tarting up some of her rougher areas.

That looks very nice, love that interior.

The pictures are great too, love the combination of snow and mist!

The thought of running a V8 Land Rover would fill me with fear in the present climate but good on you for giving it a try, It looks the ideal tool for pottering around Taffyland in.

Yeah, that last photo is ace! Shame some ne'er-do-well parked that old Landy in the way!

Looks like a proper weapon. :D

Next jobs are to re-register it as a 1959 series IIA.

Looks a perfect weapon for your new neck of the woods

Tayne - tyres are a tricky one. I know it'd look better with some chunky rubber (and handle muddy stuff better) but it's very original and I don't want to meddle too much. It's tricky enough to resist covering the whole thing in chequer plate (oh no, sorry, it's VERY easy to resist doing that!).

As a Series 3 owner, gotta say I love it - nice one! :)

Blimey. That really is a good price! Something gone wrong there or extreme Christmas generosity?

Excelsior pictoral threaddage. I approve.

(I also approve of those wheel deals! Just ordered me some  )

I don't think buying a more expensive diesel Land Rover (probably £1k more than dolly's V8 like for like) makes any sense unless you're doing a lot of miles.

The shitey narrow rostyles are fab, they just need a lick of paint.

235/70/16s are the way on Landies. You may need to adjust the steering stops a bit, but they seem to ride and handle better on 'em.

Personally, I wouldn't go for big mud chomping jobs, Michelin M+S jobs have always done the job just fine for me. Bridgestone Desert Duellers are to be avoided!

I'd like a 110 V8, with a Range Rover transfer box, 3.9 cam, Vitesse heads and EFi, preferably on lpg, but if they're running right you can get 25 mpg on a run with the Rangie transfer box.

ORLY?

I know EFI is more efficient than a pair of knackered Strombergs, but I never got more than 20mpg from my old 109 V8 with overdrive. You know the old Audi 100 advert where the parachute comes out of the boot to show aerodynamics? That's a Land Rover, that is :D

I like that too.I've found wider tyres will let you know if the steering damper is knackered (in a violently shaking scarey kind of way). The steering pump on a 3.9 looks exactly like one on a 200TDi but I've not seen a 3.5 to compare.Steering boxes leak aswell but I would replace the hose clips first.

If the tyres on it aren't knackered, just leave them on.

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who didn't think Land Rovers were 'improved' by lots of banal stickers and badly sited chequer-plate (the panel that goes over the rear crossmember being the worst culprit- it looks shit and the only reason anyone would ever fit one is to stop the MOT man seeing the rust).

Your Ninety really is an awesome find 8) - CSWs (esp V8s) in original spec with the trim in good nick are hard to find, plus yours has the 'for one year only' 1987 go-faster stripes.

As to tyres I actually downsized when I got my Ninety. It had 7.50x16 Grabbers on it which simply raised the gearing too much for an 85bhp turbodiesel to cope, as well as throwing the speedo out of whack. I went for some 205x16 Goodyear Wrangler AT/S M+S ones which have been awesome. No noticeable wear, very good grip on the road, excellent in the snow and I haven't got stuck when I've been bumping around Salisbury Plain, even if the axles have been dragging through the mud.

Looks a treat, well done. An ex-colleague of mine has somehow taken to collecting V8 Landies; one of them is a 1986 LWB hardtop with TVR running gear. I drove it, the power is seamless! If you get as much fun out of yours as he does out of his, you'll be laughing. Don't worry about fuel consumption, it's much more important to have the right car in the right place for the right job, and I reckon you've done it. Petrol is like fags; there's always a way to find the money (says the man who's never smoked  ).

RLY!

I built a Landy 90 a few years ago for someone. Was originally diesel, fitted a tuned 3.9 on carbs, Rangie transfer box, and set it up properly. 17 Mpg around town, 25 on a run (provided it didn't go above 70ish) and totally reliable. Sold it to a barking mad German bloke who drove it to Kiel, towing a broken lightweight he'd bought and killed on the M6.

Was fun, that thing. Lightened flywheel and a few other tweaks meant it was pretty quick for a Landy too.

Blimey - nice, but thats the second Blackpool car you have had recently ( the other being the Campervan).

Am I missing bargainz around here then?

Posted

Don't worry Ted - both the camper and the Landy came from the Midlands having migrated south.

Thats utter class, apart from the usual tidying i'd leave it exactly how it is. Well purchased!

I have those rims on my Landy too....a 1995 300tdi. I did think about changing them but chose not too as they are starting to become a rare sight as most people junk them for cheap discovery alloys or such like.....and sometimes, on Landies, original is best

I run 235/85/16's on mine and they are as wide as you can go on these rims. 235/70's are OK on Rangies and Disco's but you'll appreciate the extra height on a Landrover.

Have been trying to trace the air-leak on the PAS system today. No joy at all. There's quite a lot of pipe! Fluid level seems low so maybe a top-up will sort things out? Doubt it but better to at least have the right amount in there!

Tried sourcing an oil pressure switch locally, but no joy there. Mind you, the light usually means "your engine is f*cked" anyway, so not much of a warning. Annoyingly, I found an oil switch which is very nearly the right one, but not quite. No idea where it came from!

Have been invited to a "Pay and Play" on Sunday, so might just ignore the issues and go and see what this thing can do. Have been spraying Bilt Hamber's Anti-corrosion wax in some typical rust spots in preparation, then got silly and used Mer's bumper restorer stuff on the black front panels and side-stripes. Some improvement, but really, I need to clean the whole thing - which seems a silly thing to do BEFORE playing in the mud...

Upon your return you can inform us of just how many times you were advised to fit a lift kit/rock sliders/winch/extra lights/modular wheels/acres of chequerplate/massive "one life, live it" stickers.

I'll wager it will be into 3 figures.

Wow awesome shite, where were the pictures taken? Id love to go there for a look

I'm going to nag Raj, my Hindu friend to buy a Landy and cover it in "Infinite Lives-Live Them All" stickers. :D

Taken in the Elan Valley. It's a beautiful area, and completely free of tourists this time of year! Anorak fact - the system of reservoirs here is used to provide Birmingham's water. That must be quite a pipe!
