How many cars do you need?

Between myself and my mate 205Gti at the beginning of this week we had 7 cars. Due to a couple of incidents we now find ourselves in a position where next week we are likely to be squabbling over the DAF which we both chipped in on because:

1965 Hillman Imp - massively off the road

1972 Triumph GT6 - needs MOT and a bit of loving but runs and drives. Financial constraints of house move mean its waiting.

1987 VW Scirocco (sold)

1991 205 GTi -no tax but again runs and drives.

1999 Renault Scenic - did not realise the MOT ran out over a week ago. Realised last night but not booked in until next Thursday

2003 Merc CLK - slight prang needs to go in for minor repair.

This means that between us for a couple of days next week whilst the Merc is getting repaired we are likely to only have the DAF to drive. What's that all about? I really hope his wife does not want to use the DAF as she is also a co-owner of it as we will be truly screwed.

I am sure I am not the only one on here that has had several cars and had to use the bus? Anymore tales of woe?

Many aeons ago, I had a Samba and a 4 door mark 1 Escort GT. The Samba had a broken engine mounting, the remains of which I had trouble getting off, and I lost the 1 and only set of keys I had for the Ford.

BUMHATS!

However, I got the loan of a mark 2 Astra for as long as I needed it, on the basis that I did the HG and rear brakes. What a miserable heap of shit that car was, even after I fixed it.

Posted

At one point I got up to about seven or eight cars and none of them was working and/or roadworthy, meaning I had to 'borrow' Er Indoors wheels, or walk everywhere. Miserable!

I've got four at the moment.

XJR - working, used every day, could do with light cosmetics but that's about it. Will need MOTing before December.

SD1 - working, needs a plate on the boot floor for the MOT. The exhaust hanger has ripped through. MOT ran out last month.

406 - working, needs a VIC check before it can go on the road.

Escort - in about 300 bits, 1000 miles away, needs welding and rebuilding.

It's easy. The cars that you need is equal to n+1, where n is equal to the number of cars that you already have. :D

I've only got the three. And shares in a bus, or two, or more, and a velosolex, and, oh you get the gist.

I think 15 in one go was my record.

Between me and the Mrs, 6 currently. 1 garage, no drive or parking spaces

1994 Honda Accord 150k. Because I was offered it for about the same price as a good meal for 2. eBay soon

1982 MG Metro. Undriveable due to attempted theft

1990 Metro Gti. No tax or Mot. Needs pump up. Just fitted vvc

2010 Citroen C3 Diesel. Company car given to me

2001 Opel Corsa. Mrs old car, eBay soon

2006 Toyota Aygo. the Mrs new blast

Four is probably my "need" quantity which would give me:

Triumph 1300 - good all rounder and lots of sentimental value

Datsun 1000 - early J-tin interest and definitely a keeper

Toyota Starlet - daily driver

AN Other - a "toy" so to speak which could change as the fads take me - at present it's my Datsun Violet.

That's realistic from a financial and space point of view and it also means I'm currently over the figure to the tune of two!

I have four and looking at another tomorrow

Daily driver C4 Grand Picasso

Van Escort 1.8d N/A (my daily)

Fiat Marea 2.0 no MOT/TAX needs new clutch and sitting on a family member drive

Citroen C5 again no T&T and being broken for spares (slowly) in the garage

the C5 has to go as soon as if I get a Herald as I just dont have the room to store any more cars, unless I park the van on the road...

4 cars here. 3 Rover Sterlings and a Micra (Like 3 men and a baby :? )

Sterling # 1 - Been stored away since I lost my insurance on it, has now developed a strange sound from the waterpump/cambelt area, dont want to risk mullering the engine until I can afford to get it done.

Sterling # 2 - Been stored since late 2008. Bought it with known gearbox issues. Recently bought a gearbox for it, now need some money to get the box fitted and recomissioned back onto the road.

Sterling # 3 - Pretty well documented, was my daily until the engine decided to throw a wobbly and send out clouds of white smoke from its exhaust. Currently sitting deteriorating outside until I can find yet another garage to store it in. A mate has said he will pop by to see if he can properly diagnose the problem.

Micra - Great little car, stored away since 2009, recently put back on road needing nothing more than a new battery and wipers. Again, great little car.

A mate of mine had at one point, 111 cars as a collection.

I only have three, not for the want of trying though.

2006 Audi A6 - working perfectly.

1982 Audi 100 - working perfectly, although I won't use it much in the winter as I don't like bringing it out in the rain

1981 Audi 200 - In a million bits and swallowing cash at an alarming rate.

At the moment 3 Leyland Nationals, something which once resembed a Fiat 126 Bis, a rotten Ford Courier Combi, the Cavalier and the Mondeo...

Realistically, I only really need one - my XJ40*. Asked how many I want, well where do I start? - I'd have a whole field full...

*Worried it will fail its MOT on rust at the moment. Yes, I know I always claim the rust problem is exaggerated!!

Love is blind!! :(

Four at the moment.

Alfa 147 running well after fitting a new variator but tax runs out tomorrow.

Discovery runs out of tax tomorrow.MOT due in a week, needs a shed load of welding and new exhaust.

Meastro ran out of MOT last week.Done less than 1000 miles in the last year so should be ok.

Escort Mk7 been languishing at my mother's house for the past two years (really need to get it sorted out)

Well now... the present collection reads:

A40 Farina, in bits, as it has been for over a year now;

Granada, pending some small jobs and bureaucracy so I can use it legally;

Brava pickup, at the moment our one-and-only car really! Can't count the Granny until it's all properly registered, MoT'd etc, because I'm not supposed to be driving it until all that's done. The Capri I traded-in against it was a legal running car... Mrs Ramrod keeps saying she wants a convertible, preferably a 206 or a Mk1 Golf, but I think I'd like to build up the finances a bit first...

Three. And really, and inspite of the fact that I'd have more if I could, that is about right for me.

Toledo / Sprinter / R4 fleet pretty much covers all bases for me.

Posted

I have one, but that's ok because I have time for roughly 0.8 old cars so any more would lead to trouble.

Posted

'57 A35. Daily transport, but thinking of swapping the insurance onto the Cambridge and selling that one.

'59 A35. Dead.

'58 A35. The nice one. All road legal, ready for next year's show season.

'58 A55 Cambridge. A bit shabby, but all legal and reliable.

'85 Maestro 1.3 Base. My dad is using the OAP-mobile every day and it is getting better for use (had been off the road since 1999 when I first got it. Has recently completed several fully laden trips to Norfolk and Suffolk, no problems.

As to other cars, as long as you've got space to store them, as far as I'm concerned you can never have enough! I'm currently trying to buy a Wolseley landcrab (although the owner won't answer my notes, even to tell me he wants to keep it) and a Reliant Robin/Rialto.

Posted

The Innocenti is my only completely legal car at the moment.

That's mainly my fault for not pulling my finger out though. The rest of the fleet is as follows:

Subaru Justy - waiting for me to find a sidelight unit and replace a rusty brake pipe. Unfortunately I'm having a lot of trouble finding a sidelight unit, and until I do find one (or remove the other sidelight, cover the holes and shove a couple of 5w bulbs through the back of the headlight reflectors) I can't MoT it.

Saab 900 - still taxed, but the test ran out a couple of weeks ago. Needs front tyres, tracking and handbrake sorting before it's ready for a test. And the headlights are shit too, so they might also fail. And it's still missfiring at the moment, even after I dried out the distributor - looks like it might need a set of plugs after all.

Skoda Estelle - sat on my driveway looking forlorn at the moment. It goes, but it ain't running right and I haven't yet figured out what the problem is. Plus it needs front tyres, exhaust mounting and a lot of fiddly electrical fettling before it'll pass an MoT.

Renner Six - sat in the shed. It's actually not too far off being ready for a test now (exhaust, screenwash pipe and a couple of small patches of welding on the floorpan) but I wouldn't use it in the winter anyway. Plus I really want to find it a set of Series 1 rear lights and get it an age-related plate before I start using it.

Volvo 164 - needs a bit of welding on the O/S sill and major brake work - all four calipers need stripping and rebuilding and the front discs are warped to buggery. Bizarrely, the handbrake works superbly, which is odd given that it's an auto so the handbrake hadn't been used in the seven years of my ownership. I'm not quite brave enough to drive it home on the handbrake though, so it's currently languishing on the concrete driveway outside my shed, which is an arse because if it were at home I'd probably have had it done by now - I love that car.

VW Beetle - needs major weldage and rewiring. I'm not in any great rush for it though.

All of the above will start on the button and drive, and apart from the Volvo all have brakes, but none of them are in a position to take up the role of daily driver as they stand.

One day I hope to live in a house with a driveway, so i can fill it with as many half arsed "projects" as possible

I have 2 cars and a motorbike, the BX is the workhorse being the only runner so is mostly used by my girlfriend. The type 2 has an MOT but hasn't run well for some time so is SORN'ed until I've worked up some level of interest in fixing it. I really should get it sorted as the BX could do with some welding and we will need something to cover for it.

The motorbike broke down before I passed my driving test nearly 5 years ago and is in theory a future project but is mostly a way of having a neglected heap and still being able to fit 2 cars on the drive (which are both neglected heaps from the neighbours perspective). I usually cycle to work as its fairly close by and can be tricky to park at.

I can remember a few years back being stuck with 3 non-runners (VW,Megane and an Espace)plus the broken bike and having to cadge lifts to work as I was living in the sticks.

The answer to the original question depends on who you ask.

If you ask an Autoshiter, the answer will always be "More" or something that boils down to that.

If you ask an Autoshiter's wife (given that the overwhelming majority of us are male) the answer will always be "why don't you just scrap that load of old rubbish and get a nice new Corsa?"

Different planets... (there really should be an emoticon for "sigh")
