Whats the point of it then ?

I am perhaps a bit behind the times and i have never understood fashon fads etc so whats the idea of it then ?

Also i have seen a few older VAG motors with roofracks full of rubbish is that another fad ?

The roofracks are another part of the same fad.

I like the idea of what you might call "earned" rat look, all the battle scars and odd parts tell the car's story. The contrived rat look is just that though, it's like these chain pubs that are festooned with house-clearance tat.

[rant]I like those shape golfs (first properfamilycar I can remember!) and it does really piss me off seeing them SLAMED/WIT WIKD ALLOIS/RATLOOK, I do occasionally find examples of rat look where it does look good (generally T/B/A based Rods) but charging this much for what is essentially a POSthat you poured paint stripper onto and have properly sorted out afterwards (impending crunch/crusty doom) sums it up. Just like the ex minter VW camper I saw in france with shitty iron cross stickers on which had been deliberatelykeyed in an attempt to make it look ratlook.[/rant]

I have to agree with you on this 'shatlook' cars, I hate seeing what some of these so called 'Car enthusiasts' do to there cars, here's a prime example of a couple i saw at a show a few weeks back, I agree that the cars are only a mk 3 Fiesta and a 414i so nothing of really value but really, what is the point still?!, If i was a copper i'd find something to nick them about.

Thats actually up for sale at a garage so must be a part ex. Surely they are just chancing their arm that some dickhead will buy it before they chop it.

I wonder what it was traded for? Ferrari 308, Aston Martin?

Chevette's seem to be very popular as 'rat look' cars (have seen a few on ebay). A shame as there are not that many standard ones left, they are either HS replica's or Ratlook.

Wouldn't mind Ratlooking a Nissan Joke and then parking it outside the local Nissan dealer.!!

It's just an incredibly lazy and unoriginal way to toss about with old cars. I'm quite the people who do this think they're 'cool' and 'street' whereas they acutally look like dickheads and cockwands.

Old American pick-up trucks, 'proper' rods and the VERY occasional VW camper get away with it, everyone else is a scene following turd it would appear. I blame the VW followers and their never ending quest to do something different, which actually translates to every fucking one of them following the herd. You only have to look at pictures of VW shows where there is/was row upon row of fucking Mk2 Golfs with slightly different (from standard) headlights and grilles.

Rat looking/satin or matt blacking your car? Sticking a rusty roof rack full of rusty shit on the rusty roof? Fuck off you bellend.

I used to feel some pity for these annoying ratlook losers, stupidity reigns and modern society is breeding these helpless tossers whose lives are empty and at least are trying to be different, not really the case though, just the same old soulless plebs trying to make their 'lifestyle statement.' To me it seems a desperate attempt by the most tedious and pointless to portray themselves as something, anything, other than the painful dullard non entity that they are. This attitude is everywhere, losers obsessed with image, that's why our roads are crammed with ridiculous looking cars designed to stand out like a shit on a duvet and sell finance. It's like a school playground look what I've got attitude, fortunately, any normal sensible person can see right through the twats, and disregard them.

Oh and what's with all the window stickers? Window lickers, they're made of glass to enable vision but that's obviously low priority to these fucking retards.

When they started with it and it was a T2 bus or Beetle I thought when they were done well that it looked ok. All the newer stuff - Golfs, Polos, Escorts, zzzzzzzz etc is just plain fucking rubbish, unoriginal and stupid.

I think the matte black paint thing looks great, but it's almost religious now, the rust thing with various bits and bobs stuck on is just nasty. Each to their own, it's just in line with boyracers with awful bodykitted Corsas/Clios, those 'omgrwddrift'n'' chappies with loud 200SX's with various coloured bodyparts and pink wheels and even old men with MGB's, etc.

There aren't many mods that you can do to car that are 'original', tho... :?

As my username suggests, I like matt/satin/NATO green/primer on cars (had a couple of matt black ones) but I wouldn't say I'd roll the above. But each to their own, and it's not like they've wrecked a Bugatti Royale (or even a Vauxhall Royale come to that). I would guess that the average MK3 Golf is an MOT failure/slipping clutch/blown headgasket away from the crusher anyway.

My Land Rover looks like a piece of shit. However, this is due to the last 40 years of abuse by a Farmer, a Sugar Factory, and now me. I still bolt rusty crap to it, like the FREE full length roof rack..... I like it to look shit. Less likely to get pinched like that.

The thing is Albert, there's an underlying functionality behind the shit look of your Land Rover. At no point have you deliberately gone out with a DA sander and taken paint off panels to make it look worse than it already was. And I'm willing to bet your shite free roof rack is actually used to carry things rather than spurious pieces of epherma.

Exactly. Actually earned rat look is great - like Electric Leyland's Audi 100. It's just how it is.

All these modern rat looks are basically how to ruin a car. Make it look 'hilariously' shit by making it rust, then get bored, wonder why no-one will buy it and scrap it. Yeah, nice work fellas.

It's not just that though, this 'look' is applied to all manner of crap now and it's been like a tidal wave. It really is as if people have no capability to think for themselves so just follow a popular theme.

I certainly agree it's difficult to be original and some 'styles' definately suit some cars, but for what seemed like anyone who modified any car the rat look was just a lazy way of doing their's.

Jesus wept.

If any child of mine does that to their car (that I have paid for and bloody well insured because they cant get insurance any other way)

I will sell them into the white slave trade to teach them the value of things.

It only looks right on choppers, and then only when done well, like this:

DSC_0077.jpg

Plain matt black or olive green can look ok on a suitable car, but anything else, especially the fake rust and everything-but-the-kichen-sink add-ons are an absolute no-no.

There's a really well ratted old Beetle not far from here. None of the stickers and deliberate rust shit, but it looks its age. It has a few tweaks, it's lowered and has a big exhaust and looks very very solid but the paint is faded and the chrome is worn here and there. I rather like it, if the truth be told.

There's a splendid type 2 bus around as well. Early one so worth a bloody fortune and it's on Fuchs alloys, but it doesn't look like it's seen a paint booth since it was built. No roof rack or sceney things other than the alloys. It has been lowered, but not stupidly.

I really should get pictures of them as they're 'proper' rat look jobs and rather good.

The P5 I had last year would have made the perfect base for an ace ratter.

I have never got rat look. Its just something that the kids are into that I'm too old to understand, like rap music. Atleast they're all having fun with their cars, I guess thats the main thing.

I too used to have a Rover P5 (P5B actually) It was on the road as a daily for a while but had patch on patch of welding underneath, badly crazed paintwork everywhere, dents, rotten chrome, the lot. The interior was falling to bits, too. Think of it as the Rover version of the Mk2 Jag from Withnail and I. It was the definition of natural rat look, I just thought it looked totally shit. I sold it to a mate to razz round in, he promptly ripped the exhaust off and the Rover was last seen running a big American station wagon flat out into the wall at Barrow raceway. I really with i'd kept it now!

Rat look originates from the Hot Rod culture of primered basic vehicles or cars from dry states with surface rust and bits missing, I love Rat look....but not this new shit that passes as "Rat", I've got the Olds and the P100 Cortina that are both Rat look.....but no roofracks and luggage for me

There's a big difference between a genuinely patinated American car that has seen 50 years of dust and sun and these horrendous creations. Doing it to boggo 90s cars just seems to be a really pointless excercise with no relevance to anything at all.

I think that's it, these cars aren't 'Rat'. They're just undeniably shit. They may be called something else other than Rat (apart from shit).
