Suttys trials and tribulations of automotive products.

I’ve been thinking recently, that I keep updating three or four different threads with my fleet of shite, and I’ve seen folk do one thread for all, so from now on, all fleet management updates will go in here.

most of you will know by now that the TD5 discovery that I’d put so much work and effort in to make a reliable and actually useable tow car, has fallen. Those who know me know that I am meticulous with car care and maintenance, and with the loss of a good steed, I am in definite need of a hug or two. The crash was an ordeal, coming to grips with it will take some time.

right now, I needed a car with decent MOT, estate and preferably automatic. This bmw was suggested and I bought it on Tuesday night.

IMG_0209.jpeg.931696249859d054b96a8c51ea96f3fb.jpeg

it’s a 530d M sport long roof, with 249k miles on the mile accumulator. The mot was done last week, but the tyres were all perished and one was close to the limit. They were also pretty horrific on the road, so I took it to work yesterday and on my way home I had 4 Hankook tyres fitted.

safety first n all that.

IMG_0215.jpeg.874236334efcd6bc544de3f0a174ca3e.jpeg

unfortunately the car smells disgusting inside, and reeks of drug dealer vibes. First job last night was to check for parifinalia

IMG_0217.jpeg.9cd215504a8bb9b5a8d551b7b19b6fd8.jpeg

Fortunately nothing found

Im currently debating whether to tap up the next Dog unit that comes into work and see if they can throw a spaniel round it “just incase”

but for now, let me walk you through it

it still has the original BMW third aid kit.

IMG_0218.jpeg.7c99c8af7ad2b57c1b517c376ce3249a.jpeg

and the emergency warning triangle and tools in the boot

IMG_0225.jpeg.ead4e245e1affbd4c25b3d30c35fa882.jpeg

it has a full (ish) size spare and the jack, chock and wheel brace are all present.

IMG_0223.jpeg.5b5ab51e7166a100ba54909ca0d28826.jpeg

everything needs a damn good clean.

It has some all singing all dancing aftermarket stereo, Xtron fitted really well at some point. Shame it doesn’t work. My brother tried to get it to work last night but we think it’s passed it.

IMG_0221.jpeg.a5429c92c4319be63f86c418d0629f49.jpeg

the seller said “yeah m9 still got the original sound system dude” however half of it is missing.

Along with the cage to fit it.

IMG_0222.jpeg.b2e448b3ccd8d56dc9c020513196f70c.jpeg

So I currently have no radio. Balls.

any hoose, the Carlton is now off the road, she needs a manifold gasket and bolts, a rocker cover gasket and a fuel pump.

IMG_9980.jpeg.2550e83efcd06dc708b2c6a9cf459146.jpeg

and if I get time today, I have a new correct lower splitter to fit.

Very sorry to read about the demise of your Disco. Can't imagine how gutting that must have been after the resource that has gone into it recently.

On a happier note, that E39 is a fabulous thing!

The BMW has epic tailgate lamp fading.

these would benefit with sanding and clear coating, but for now, a cut and polish will do.

and I’ve paid a lad to give the interior a good clean

now smells like watermelon AND weed.

I’m now at a garage in Buxton, a friend of mine works by himself. I spotted a bad break pipe yesterday that should have technically failed MOT (it was advised but not failed)

IMG_0239.jpeg.d260c0d24d7f504e7e315f9e6f545a44.jpeg

yeah that needs changing.

Other side wasn’t as bad.

That 5 series looks like it could be really nice with a little effort. It does have a cheapest of the cheap DVLA Select plate on it though, which I'd be getting shot of, stat.

I think it’s the original plate? Unless it was put on very early in its life.

Brake pipe completed.

next on the list, offside front track rod gaiter is buggered. So that’ll be the next part to order. Sills don’t look too bad at the moment.

gave it a wash when I got home. The paintwork is relatively smooth and even, apart from tailgate top which has been replaced.

I’m a Land Rover man through and through so I was genuinely gutted at the loss of your Disco. That said I’ve always had a mega soft spot for an e39 and that looks awesome, excited to follow your journey with it.

Aw, shit man.

It doesn't rain, it pours.

Old BMW cooling systems are great* fun*.

I still glance nervously at my E36's temperature gauge whenever I drive it. Despite fitting new radiator hoses, a Miele HD thermostat, an aluminium thermostat housing, aaaand a new viscous fan coupling just two years ago! Plus the radiator itself is 4 years old!

Arrived at edgertons Newport in a manual Dacia duster with no air con.

I only took one picture in the compound. My wife was wondering if any of the eggs broke in the fridge.

I also have the ptsd x3. Apparently, judging by my mates recent experience with a 2016 420i, they still havent learnt either.

Liked for the intact eggs. Sympathy for all the associated malarkey.

New water pump and thermostat for the bmw fitted. The old water pump bearing had collapsed and probably explains the rattle on cold start up and the high pitched squeal over 2400rpm.

The wife’s gone out with her mates. I put Arthur to bed and considered cracking a beer and doing nothing….. but the weather is too good, so I decided to start ticking jobs off on the Carlton.

fuel pump done

then turned it around and put it on axle stands. Next job is to replace the manifold gasket and remove a broken manifold bolt

Your Carlton looks beautiful, as always and fair play to you for cracking on with things, after all you’ve just been through. I’d have taken the beer option for sure.

I had a very similar picture this afternoon with my own ungrateful bastard. Uncanny.

When you consider you, the wife and kid in that, what a job it did for you. Wouldnt like to be in a smaller lump of metal in those circumstances.
