607 3.0 V6 BOURGEOIS - Now owner’s thread

I was offered a pristine, black 607 3.0 V6. Beige leather. 115k km on the clock. Needs belts, a service and some godawful Android stereo ripped out.
I need another car like I need a bullet in the head. However I never had anything over 2.0 and never had an automatic, so I’m keen to try. I have absolutely no clue about 607s in general as they’re not really common cars here, nor do I know anything about 3.0 V6 engines in them, as anything over 2.0 is heavily taxed here so very rare.

What do I need to know? Scare me away please!

Is it basically a Citroën c6?

If you're going to pay extra tax for a V6 why not go for something that'll feel a bit more special like a Busso-engined Alfa? I never "got" automatics and hadn't enjoyed driving them until I purchased the hearse - the slushy auto is perfectly suited to the 4 litre Jag straight 6. I Don't know about the V6 in the 607, a colleague has a diesel one and has borrowed my code reader three times in as many weeks. I should imagine a 607 would be as prone to electrical problems as your 307 only more complex.

Is it not modernized 605/XM platform rather than C6?

It’s 1/5th the price of something like Buso engined Alfa. 😄 It’s out of luxury tax as it’s over 20 years old, so it went down from €HOWFUCKINGMUCH per year to ballpark 450€/year.
BSI failed before, and it was repaired so hopefully some time before electrical gremlins? I’d test electrical systems before buying obviously.

Yeah it's basically a 605 in a late 90s/early 00s frock.

They handle quite well, they feel massive, the interior is less satisfying than a 605 but the seats are better. The front and rear overhangs are so big it's almost hilarious.

The LCD display in the middle of the stereo is probably broken, or loses pixels as it warms up.

It will be utterly pants on fuel but the 24v V6 is quite hardy, it wasn't too unusual to see 406s with the same engine doing some really impressive mileages. They sound brilliant of course and the 607 is one of those cars which just has to be an automatic.

I suspect parts availability in LHD Europe is probably far better than the UK.

Sounds great. Just don't pay too much. Unusual car now - these big Peugeots never made much of an impact in the UK and can't say the last time I even saw one in France.

Ive never had a clue about any of the LCBL cars Ive bought, A8, L322, 3 and 5 series and so on and Ive always just learned as I go. Just be prepared to bail out if things get too much!

I like them.

That should be enough for you to run away.

I purchased a quality* one once with a penchants for Cosby-in-a-can,  that was a 2.2 diesel though so you'll probably be fine.

Much more conventional than a C6 and has been mentioned definitely bears more relation with the 4/605 era Peugeots than the later 3/407 etc. Things like column stalks, switchgear, interior ergonomics are pretty obviously 605 derived. Very nice cars, comfy and well appointed inside, as mentioned the overhangs are monolithic.

Also the only car I've ever broken down in sufficiently to require recovery, but sure you'll be fine.

Sounds like a really terrible idea....

When are you going to collect it?

Seriously though I love non premium executive cars (Omegas, Granadas, 605s and especially the Safrane). We effectively have the same issue with V6s which are mostly in the top tax band when built after 2005.

I watched a video on YouTube where the man had fancy dampers that were impossible to replace like for like. He was trying to get them made ready for when his wore out, but he was looking all around the world and having no luck. Off putting enough?

That's...wow. So if it's active suspension one run don't walk. Noted.

Literally anything could be up with it, it’s an old example of a not very popular car that won’t be very easy to locate parts for. I’d pay no more than you can afford to lose, have a fuck about with it see if it’s got some life left in it and hopefully it’ll last a bit until something goes like an ABS module that means the only one left is on eBay from Latvia and it looks like it’s been in the sea.

Buy it but don’t get financially attached to it. Treat it like someone you’d fuck as a bit of a stop gap between relationships.

I'm sure there would still be solutions if you didn't mind changing it from factory spec? (I know nothing about 607s).

If there's a place in Europe other than Poland and Latvia that has parts for obsolete cars, it's Serbia.

Well, this was not convincing enough. I'm off for a test drive tomorrow. Stay tuned! 😄

I think they are a lot better than most people think and the 3.0 is the engine to have. I'm not seeing any huge liability attached to them either. Naturally I would (and wanted one for a while).

Fly over and give this one a shot while you’re here? 😄

Maybe 🫣

yes

Looking forward to seeing it!

Most of them naturally are the 2.2 diesel here, I would own @bramz7s previous 607 now had the logistics worked out. I think the petrol V6 would be more suited to what Peugeot wanted the car to be though.

It wafts. It’s not fast, it’s just…making progress briskly. You give it a boot and steady forward motion ensues, with no noise or jerking. Handles surprisingly well for something the size of glacier and overhangs as long as Smart Fortwo.

It has super-unwafft-o-matic button to stiffen the suspension and steering which turns it from wafty into something that feels wrong. Putting gearbox into sport results in revs and fuel consumption going up and doesn’t translate to any additional forward motion. 😄

Bum warmers both front and rear, stupid number of speakers (no JBL on the grille though), car phone with an actual handset. All the toys you never needed but dreamt of in 2003.

Anyone with servicebox access to run a VIN for me to see what it was configured with?

Definitely different. In a time when they stuck a load of plastic to cover the engine, Peugeot went “non” and decided to cover the rest of the engine bay, framing the engine as the star.

Cover is missing because LPG conversion. Have some more plastic as it should look 😄

Ooh I love all the unnecessary frog under bonnet cladding, it’s the mark of a genuine French car wondering why the hell they did it like that or more pertinently how the bloody hell am I going to get at that.

Enlever le moteur et le boite….

I feel like the engine bay is cavernous, and there should be plenty of room to work on things once you remove the plastic cladding. This being a French car, I'm sure someone came up with a bright* idea to remove a tensioner bolt through the exhaust manifold or something similar.
