This is my new orphan, 1990 Audi 80 Quattro, owned by ex Top Gear presenter Barry Gill & then his son after he died. Needs a bit of love but definately a keeper as his son is a mate!

Does anyone know anything about them?

80's are pretty sturdy. If it's rusty, it's probably been walloped. Mechanics are pretty robust, change the gear / diff oil though as no-one ever bothers.............

Nice, still a classy car today if in good nick. Is this a 5 banger?

Posted

Doovla reckons it's a two-litre, so four-pot. Still not a bad engine but never tried one hooked up via a quattro box though.

From memory only foreign markets got the 2.3 Quattro in lowly-spec, all ours were alloys and glitz.

Posted

I did wonder why there were no alloys and the engine looks fairly basic! Not a 16v I'd guess?

Posted

If the engine looks basic, it's an 8v. A 16v has "DOHC" emblazoned across the top.

Nice looking car, always admired the 80.

jection, is that a good thing?

It is if it's still 'Schon mit Katalysator Technik' like it says in the back window - I'm loving that original sticker plus the Scotts of Sloane Square number plates 8)

Big fan of those early 80s, well done sir.

It'll either be a 3A engine (up to 1990) or a 6A engine at a guess... look on the plastic cambelt cover on the left hand side, there's a barcoded sticker on the top (probably under a breather pipe) which has a number starting with the engine code, i.e. 3A1234567890.

They're fairly bulletproof but the "short block" engines like these are interference where the VW/Seat 2.0 8v engines use a taller block and are non-interference so a cambelt might be a good idea.

I like these old AUdis, I still can't help thinking that the 'B3' 80 is where Audi started going wrong though - they're not that nice to drive, confusing concrete suspension and seats for 'sportiness'. They are very solidly built though and I wouldn't say no to a 90.

That does look rather nice. However, it appears that The A Team have upgraded to a VW Crafter and left it at your place?

Posted

A Team indeed! You can just about see our Gulf Racing Crafter in the background, the next two are going to be Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine!

Thats a top looking motor there, I think the front arches can go a bit rusty but thats about it. I believe the 5 pot Audi 80 was actually called the 90 but Im ready to be proved wrong.

Not sure, as you could get an 80 with a V6, [usually attached to a knackered auto box]...........with a bizarre combined ABS / power steering pump thingy, that costs zillions if it goes wrong.

Driving this has made me remember just how little I care for VAG products!

It needs a little bit more love than I'm prepared to give, anyone got the horn for it?

Posted

With a towbar fitted that would make a great international A frame tat carrier for Mr_bo1.

That looks great, love it!

Bargain price, too. I have had my 1800cc Audi 100 for a couple of years now and been everywhere in it. Audis of this era are very comfortable, solid cars.

Try it over on www.classic-audi.co.uk. Theres real appreciation for qual quattros like this over there.

Bored with it that's all. Basically it's a 190e 2.0 auto with tax (11/10) and test (oct/10) had a replacement n/s front wing that's going to shit and needs a strip and repaint in the correct colour. Oh and the three pointed star got ripped off outside the house by some theiving scum, hense I've lost me mojo with it really.

Applied for v5 via previous owner but never arrivied but willing to re apply at my cost.
