If my memory serves me correctly:

1.6 = 75BHP

1.8 = 90BHP

2.0 = 100BHP

2.0 inj = 115BHP

I’m so pleased that I remember shit like this.

Those seem a bit low, the 1.6 in my '91 Carina allegedly made 90HP with the economy head and the Aisan K-Type carb. With injection and the wide valve-angle Yamaha head they were making 128 in the Corolla GTi and MR2.

Whilst those figures may appear low, they are correct my friend. You’re not comparing apples with apples.

This is one of the reasons I don’t do the whole car show ‘thing’. Particularly the big named events. There’s always a bit of elitism going on and it pushes people out.
This Sierra is comfortably the rarest variant now and should be exactly what Festival of the Unexceptional is about.
If you say Sierra to anyone with even a tiny bit of car sense they’ll most likely think of a Cosworth or possibly an XR4. The reality though is those flagship models were never around in big numbers. 99% of people have no real memory or connection to those as they were so few and far between. The ones people did see, did travel in and do have memories of were the normal ones. The Base, L, GL even the Ghia. They were like street furniture in their day and that’s not a slur against them at all.
The fact any have survived (especially in this countries awful climate!) is pretty remarkable. The flagship models will always survive as they more often than not get wrapped in cotton wool but the lesser models worked for a living and didn’t get that, later on as they got old they weren’t considered worth keeping or any value so they just got binned en masse while the flagship stuff was saved. Now, there’s bugger all left of the normal stuff. That makes them all the more appealing in my opinion.
Id gladly see cars like The Base at shows all day long rather than yet another CossieM8, or Mexico or whatever. The normal run of the mill models are the real McCoy in my opinion.

I remember when I bought my Capri (also a Base!) everyone said to put a hot 2.0 in it. Put a 2.8i in it… why have you bought a basic one!?
Even restoring it more recently people still say the same things.
But - my car is a survivor of the ones people remember and did see every day. I remember them like that. But in a backwards kind of way there’s so few around now it makes those cars even more special and unique. I certainly can’t remember the last one like mine I saw. Yet if you go to a show you’ll most probably see numerous 2.8i’s together. I did the last show I visited!

As far as concourse condition goes, meh! Your car and if your happy with it how it is then that’s all that matters. A bit of wear and tear just tells people it’s old and has had a life. Adds to the uniqueness!

For Sierra memories.
My parents never had one. I loved them and wanted them to get one but it never happened. But, I did have a school friend who’s mum had one (a red A reg L hatch) which she’d regularly pick me up and drop me off in. She had it absolutely yonks but I still remember now getting picked up in it and being sat in the front passenger seat with my friend and one seatbelt strapped around us both together because it had no rear belts! It wasn’t very old at the time but I loved that car!
Some years later a neighbour bought a car. She knew I loved Sierra’s so showed me it when I saw her one day. It was a later Sierra Sapphire in black with red pin stripes! It looked the absolute dogs dangly bits!😆
But… I can’t honestly say I remember any Cosworth or XR4 ones from back in the good old days!

Brilliant post 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

That must mean it's also 10 years since I first met @Six-cylinder.

It really does look bad there but you've chosen a photo of the worst bit. Wasn't @Angrydicky welding it the day before and only got an MOT that morning so there was no time to tidy it up? Ironically it was the scruffiest car there but must be one of the few that is still active on the forum now.

Also a bonus reminder of how @dollywobbler used to look in his bearded hippie era.

Bloody hell that's a blast from the past! A very youthful looking myself on the left next to DW. CMS206 on the right.

I had actually forgotten it was that very morning I got it through an MoT, wow that really was a bit last minute wasn't it! I must have been determined.

I put a new arch on the osr after discovering the original was totally rotten and full of filler, and patched the sills and I think the nsr arch? Did all the work on the driveway at my old house in Southend.

The indicator stalk was buggered and fell apart when I removed it, but the legend that is Jono Carman (can't remember his username on here but he was on here) had a nos one which he sent me foc. Rear lights were all corroded inside due to years of water ingress which was playing havoc with the bulbs, but they cleaned up ok.

I can't remember what the problem was with the excessive hydrocarbons apart from it wasn't running properly (excessively weak) maybe plugs or HT leads.

@ianb Sierra are you far from the Zero2 Bus Museum in that Essex? Decadent red grille aside it may help with ideas of how the door cards should be?

I literally met the owner of this a few weeks ago as he was parting with windows for free!

(Although I gave a donation to cancer research at his request)

I'm not sure if it there currently?

It was at Bressingham steam museum on Sunday.

The owner lives minutes away

He sent me this picture of it on display on Sunday.

(I tried taking the base, but Bressingham said no as it was commercial vehicles only)

Ahhh! There was a photo of a gathering of RM post buses on facebook at the bus museum, didn't think it wasn't actually based there 😂

Wow, I didn't know one of the postbus Sierras was still around.

Being slightly later, it benefits from body colour grille, side rubbing strips and a radio, but I believe the door cards will still be the same unadorned grey plastic stuff.

Wow! Thats a new one on me. I’d have thought those post bus ones would be long gone by now.

Check out that old raised plastic font number plate too! Looks odd seeing that style on a car that age.

It's running lumpy on idle and cuts out when pulling up if you don't blip the throttle.

I'm looking at the vacuum system tomorrow with replacing the lines and bypassing the diaphragm as it leaks all the time.

I had to clean all the rear light contacts and earth's as the light's didn't work properly.

It's had all new leads, plugs etc.

Wasn’t the postbus some sort of semi taxi service that combined moving mail and passengers for rural areas?

It actually ran quite well once I sorted that poor running (I think it might have been really tired Ht leads). But that was 10 years ago! It was still on the original autochoke carb back then which are renowned for being a bit shit although it did work ok while I had it, I think it started playing up for Bornite and he converted it to a manual choke (Weber?) which was much better.

I took it to Cornwall and back and it didn’t miss a beat, it drove fantastically along the motorways and the A30 and I didn’t find myself missing the 5th gear. The only issue was the bonnet cable came off and I had to manipulate the catch with a long screwdriver from underneath.

I replaced some front bushes, maybe track control arms? I can’t remember what they were called but they were totally shot on this Sierra and the steering was a bit vague before, it was much improved with that done.

Once it's up and running, it's a not bad at all.

Just idle and low revs, which makes think I have a vacuum issue.

Yes.  I seem to remember that they had mostly Commer PBs.

Bedford CFs seem to have been popular, too.

This page on the Postal Museum website gives lots of info, and several pictures of PB postbuses.  Postbuses ran from 1967 to 2017.

Some of the tickets were rather funky, like this one with the 10p stamp denoting the bus fare, cancelled with a CF shaped cancel!

My picture from about 1982.  I don't know where it is but down South somewhere I think.

The only ones I remember seeing in our area, probably mid to late 90s, were all extremely tired looking Sherpas.

10 years ago today @Angrydickydrove it to the Fod!

I remember sitting in the back of it in the pissing rain with Angrydicky and Skizzer (I think...) watching the roffle being drawn for the Lada Samara.

Ha I'd forgotten about that 😂 I remember making sure I wasn't sitting in direct line of sight to it I think

Wow that's a fab find! I assume that sticker and surrounding paper will get folded/cut out and kept?

Speaking of bumpers, where did you manage to find the replacement rear bumper from? It looks fab.

When it first came into this fold, it had a Nissan (?) rear bumper.

Also. I saw in the FuriousDriving video it has proper rubber Sierra mats which gets a:

Both were already with car when I won it.

The mats were given to BorniteIdentity at one of the FOTUs.

I replaced the rear chrome trim and I think I've located NOS front chrome trim.

Body looks FUCKED, but interior all right. I’d buy it and break it.

Odd, dangly mirrors on a D plate? Some story there perhaps.

Probably a one off fleet order.
