Previous owners of your vehicle...

So I have bought my Astra and it didn't come with any service history.

In order to try and find who's got it (the last owner doesn't have it) I will most likely have to write to the Dirty Vermin Lowlife Arsebandits and request information of the previous owners. Would also be nice to find out where it was first sold too.

Has anybody else requested information of previous owners? What exactly do you write when it says you have to provide a reason for requesting information? Also did anybody get any surprising results - was your Montego or Sierra owned by Jimmy Savile or something? :D

The 635 I no longer own was originally owned by one of the bosses of Vimto.

The XJR was originally owned by the boss of Cellnet.

The SD1 4.2 I no longer own was originally owned by Bobby Buchanon-Michaelson.

Oh, and I used to smoke about in Bernard Manning's old Caprice Classic.

There might be a form you fill in - though I can't actually remember now.

I did it years ago, seem to recall it cost £5 (might not though - it was about 1997 IIRC) and I got back a big envelope full of photocopies of all V5 certs and one or two other bits. It was actually pretty interesting.

Form V888, still £5, good value, would use again A+++++++

Ooooh. Might have to do a bit of digging

My old S-Class was owned by the MD of Carrs Manufacturing in Shaffield.

I even saw the original bill of sale at 43 odd grand in the pack......I paid £2300 when it was just 11 years old!

I had a Zephur Mk IV V4 that belonged to Lord Beaverbrook (sp?)

of News paper and Churchills war cabinet fame.

Also had an A60 that belonged to Simon Le Bon's Dad (SLB's brother worked with a mate of mine at Wood and Pickett's when they were at Ruislip)

Also had a Triumph 2000 Mk 2 that was supposed to be one of the stand cars from the 1968 Motor Show but only had the owners say so on this.

Ah that's the one. I will fill one out and pop it in the post along with a fiver. Sweet!

Well I did have a Mk2 Golf GTi that was owned by Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers when new. Dad had a Ovlov 940 which was a rep's car for Greenwood Airvac when new too.

Ooooh. Might have to do a bit of dogging

I don't think any of mine were owned by anyone famous unfortunately (though I suppose the XJ6 S3 I had might have been) as most were just the sort of shite anyone with any money or class wouldn't have bought.

Alan and Judith 'Pissed-Up-Kiddie-Snatchers' Kilshaw nearly bought a fucked up old Seat Ibiza I was flogging once though.

I've found service history before by phoning the dealers in the area the car was registered. You can obviously find out the area from the reg and there are only usually 1-3 dealers in each area (if they still exist). They even faxed it over for me :P

Never really checked any of mine out, my first Spitfire was the Dublin Motor Show car (whatever that means) bought off the stand by the then BP Managing Director for his wife, from whom I bought it. One of the Morgans was bought from an RSC actress, but obviously not famous as I can't remember her name.

My mate's Bentley S3 used to belong to Michael Barrymore, but he doesn't usually tell anyone that.

I'm sure there must be a joke about Rolls Royces in swimming pools there but I'm not going to look for it

Ooh. I might have a go at this. I would be interested in getting the history for the GT6 and the Imp.

Look through the service history, actually, they may have been the second owners, but the plate was PJN4 and it was registered to Vimto.

Yeah that's the one I used to ask about my old L200 but I never recieved any feedback at all.

Never checked any of my cars. Though keep meaning to as one of my cars had had no less than 15 previous owners since its registration in 1995.

I'm interested in finding out who they were, how long they owned the car, and if any famous/powerful names pop up.

My Alfa was originally owned by Alfa Romeo, but as it is a bog standard model I doubt if it was a road test car or anything interesting like that :(

i had a gold VW polo breadvan who was owned by camper than christmas Paul o'Grady.

Not a car but my old Yamaha RD250LC was owned by the legendary Steve Hislop.

I bought the bike in 1990 from a chap in Hawick and started to "do it up" then another guy offered me a good price for it without getting very far so sold it to him.

My mate then bought the bike and completely restored it as you see it above.

The V5 still has Steve Hislop on it :D

We took in a Mazda 626 whose previous owner as on the V5 was Ian Lavender, unfortunately the next owner was Whip Street Motors. We've sold loads of cars to them over the years, they're not fussy about their condition, but the odd thing is that I never see them driving around the local area.

The sunroof trim from this Mazda was used to trim the headlining on my car, so it's a Pikey mod in more than one way.

Sightly off topic, but it is about a previous owner

I bought a luton for the body back in March. no T&T so towed it home, it's down the storage off road now. It won't see the road again. We have the V5, showing the correct change of ownership date, and a reciept. It had been off the road at least 7 years, so it was not on a SORN when we got it, and as it's scrap I have to say I haven't SORN'd it either. We have heard nothing in this time from the DVLA about tax.

Today I had a message via ebay, from the seller, asking for the reg number. No explanation as to why.

I am basically a suspecting person, and don't understand why, if you have sold a vehicle months ago, why you would need the reg number. The seller owned it for 9 years (so the V5 says) so I would have thought he would have had something with the reg on it. I picked it up from the address on the V5, and as we have the V5 in the company name I would have thought the DVLA would have sent out the 'thank you for letting us know' letter, which would have the reg on it.

Anybody think of a legitimate reason he would suddenly want the reg? Obviously I could ask him why, but he could just tell me anything and I have a feeling something dodgy is going on.....

I filled in the V888 for my Austin Cambridge and sent it off this morning. I suspect it might be an ex Southend plod car (original reg was PJN 656).

We'll see what it throws up! As for what to put about why you want the information, I just said I was researching the car's history and would be interested in anything they have on file :)
