Shite Spotting Cycle Ride Through Middle of Nowhere, France - Completed it M80

I have somehow found myself cycling through a good chunk of South/-Eastern France, starting in Le Puy today and eventually making it down to Montpellier over the next week or so.

Naturally this is a great opportunity to look at some shite in the French countryside. Starting with today (Le Puy to Saint Privat d'Allier). Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of the Phase 1 Safrane I saw in traffic today right at the start, or the Fiat X1/9.

A surprising amount of Renault 4s in the area, this guy had his priorities right:

IMG_20250601_130133.jpg.54d9ee349f444e811d915f33ef3a051c.jpg

These were all close to the same compound:

IMG_20250601_130343.jpg.444b5a89064d0cbbcb1152b151b94477.jpgIMG_20250601_130432.jpg.2b96ccf7008463cbdb367826c849cf04.jpgIMG_20250601_130605.jpg.523f6d1d73d0eba0cb2a1c7d994353fc.jpgIMG_20250601_131130.jpg.f8eaa382aae2b69f89ee27d8d0502239.jpgIMG_20250601_131154.jpg.37c84c34217c390a0ee5ff0acd831039.jpg

Above apparently a 324td, what else would it be in France.

Second XM, used as parts car:

IMG_20250601_163303.jpg.313e3423968f0d0aab69a3d0d98cfd54.jpg

Also saw a business with an Audi V8, W126 and 80s BMW 5/7 on my way down here yesterday.

A bunch of 405s (one completely overgrown) and plenty of 205s I won't even bother taking a photo of as there will be too many.

What will we spot tomorrow? Stay tuned!

Not all that many spots today, only 19 miles through mostly deserted mountain roads and the occasional village.

However, I did spot the Renault Safrane I was waiting to find, and not only that but in the same color as the one I had before, plus possibly a V6 spec'd one, too! Similar to mine it has two different trim level badges on the doors.

Bonus points for whoever can figure out what special addition AX this is without having to look it up. I bet these wheel trims are worth a fortune to the right buyer.

Reveal since no guesses: the AX special edition you see above is a K-Way, apparently only 2500 built as 3-door. 45 mighty hp in this, too. I love it though, makes want to get an early AX in similar spec.

More spots today, I'm glad there are still a few XM in daily use:

It is indeed.

you climbed the rock?

Well, several train delays meant we didn't have much time there but we did see the sights from a distance while climbing out of the valley.

In La Bastide Puylaurent now, another 29 miles completed. I think we have the worst of it behind us.

Wonderful! Renault 12 estate and Peugeot 504 saloon particularly impressive. The AX special edition is amusing, there are so many different ones.

I see enough when we're driving around on our annual French holiday, but I imagine cycling gives that bit more opportunity to spot stuff (or at least stop safely, which isn't always possible in the car).

La France profonde. Fantastique.

Can honestly say I've never seen an AX K-way before, so that's me learned.

Also, that Rodeo. I see your Mehari and raise you something that just slightly misses the spot. Still cool mind.

And the journey goes on. This first few images are still from La Bastide, a tiny tourist town in the valleys that seems to have its best days behind it, like so many rural villages around here.

That garage seemed to be the one of the only few businesses doing relatively well, they must have made their money from renting out a variety of old school 4x4s.

Today was mostly down hill through the valley along the Borne River, with the permanent downpour and thunder it all actually felt more like the South American jungle than France.

IMG_20250604_110826.jpg.0f2c3b774619b29274fb3ef916e4ad68.jpg

Still plenty of French shite around though,as well as a remarkably rust-free Sierra!

There've been old campers doted around the side of the road throughout most of the valley, most of them looked like this was their final resting place.

More spots from 40 miles of cycling today. After the tropical scenery yesterday today's surroundings really feel like Mediterranean Southern France. There's definitely more tourists suddenly as well.

IMG_20250604_201951.jpg.a9fe28dbd6db7278f5bfa5924a8acf9f.jpgIMG_20250605_111139.jpg.957ef6ab99c21783cbf6e46c7815aa8b.jpgIMG_20250605_115050.jpg.ed540e9688746e65a7779cfe86dbee48.jpgIMG_20250605_115039.jpg.1ba65b43bef1a5c9df2868e4ebe25ee5.jpgIMG_20250605_115231.jpg.346d952b1d0f23268c0f9cea60972aaf.jpgIMG_20250605_115619.jpg.771d30f41158cfd9585596c566c5ea32.jpgIMG_20250605_115643.jpg.873f7ee928159f190bf6fb68fdde2391.jpg

As a Legend owner I highly approve of this:

IMG_20250605_120802.jpg.c84ca7d139f18df2e34b298cc4d03876.jpg

IMG_20250605_132450.jpg.3263b8ac811e9ff5f2d4e0993cf706dc.jpgIMG_20250605_151339.jpg.d18369dbddc3f462e6aef47f4c7e0836.jpg

Brand new Renault 5, the first time I've seen one in person:

IMG_20250605_151727.jpg.4dd1ad18a8dbf92da863e296306490b4.jpgIMG_20250605_151704.jpg.9a19412cc1cc4381fcf73b2be77dd493.jpg

With the new electric Twingo coming out soon as well I really feel like the original Twingo doesn't feel all that old yet (despite being a 30+ year old design), you can still see them as regular daily drivers here, making it somewhat odd to see a modern redesign of it already.

exactly, perfect.

When i first lived in Wales as a nipper it was much the same, space and getting full moneys worth meant that anywhere with a space to park stuff kept all their old cars, still happens a bit (more than england) but not everyone like it used to be

La Bastide is featured on the route Robert Louis Stevenson took in his classic book 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes'

It's now part of a recognised tourism walking trail.

Though this remains a very poor and remote part of France. Was a big centre of the counterculture in the 1970's where people sought a simpler life.

Some of that spirit remains which explains some of the campers and off-beat vehicles.

I think it's not strictly abandoned, maybe just used to attract people to the restaurant across the road.

It is indeed and we followed it at least for a few days. Still plenty of signs indicating the awareness of the history of the book (as well as accommodation reviews). However a region can only survive for so long on what will be an increasingly lesser known story (I certainly didn't hear of it before).

We've arrived in Beaucaire an hour ago. Mostly cycle paths today so fewer spots although the town should reveal a few good ones later. First couple still from yesterday.IMG_20250605_210149.jpg.f463d3b1a7b79d2f437f671a6ab34991.jpgIMG_20250605_210356.jpg.94fb78ca2bfc2f3ff88ef53e624e0d0a.jpgIMG_20250605_210426.jpg.0c86b27f07fab3f18ada23437011c251.jpgIMG_20250605_211242.jpg.a6bbc70f34eca840666b25738660a52d.jpgIMG_20250605_212100.jpg.51f9972d0127b369200701b526e52409.jpgIMG_20250605_212146.jpg.4f4fa6582ee816d9cb02688008b49d01.jpgIMG_20250605_212857.jpg.4a96503609325aec1e8a1bc3c9bf6c7d.jpgIMG_20250605_213614.jpg.94226a0bfc797b70a1990d33f715d592.jpgIMG_20250606_121952.jpg.cd5b4123ce50f81a2b0ffb3f7f3cf4d3.jpgIMG_20250606_122244.jpg.aa5f91345a39879450274880d619ff4f.jpgIMG_20250606_122308.jpg.44a736e8cabf8944d8c4ccee70a1aae3.jpgIMG_20250606_151208.jpg.89599eb2b70811e75fecd902c8d6a1b5.jpgIMG_20250606_151219.jpg.c7230cd1f30d36907c97807a9fc43b50.jpg

I've also seen a Citroen C6, slowly completing the French 90s/2000s Executive set. I think I'm just missing a 605 and Velsatis now!

40 miles from Beaucaire to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer today, which marks the official end of the cycle tour at the Mediterranean Coast (but actually isn't). Considering that my GF's uncles (now on their 70s) started in Dieppe a few weeks ago our section from Le Puy seems like a short ride down the road in comparison. It's incredible how much of a variety of landscapes we have seen in just 7 days, not to mention all the different accommodations we actually ended up staying in (none of which we chose, which let to some interesting choices). Things continue for us towards Montpellier tomorrow though.

More shite from yesterday evening and today:
