I reckon you’re fed up of projects and wanted a turn-key motor on the fleet, so you’ve tracked down and purchased the ex @cort16 BMW 320Si.

Cash waiting

Mx6? Xedos? It’s same early 90s plastic and adjustment knobs as in my 626.

EDIT: Mx6 shares the same stupid layout for vent controls as 626 GE. This is definitely Xedos.

That does look very Japanese - I’m going with a Xedos!

Yep Xedos 6.  If it wasn't for the ULEZ I'd still have mine.  In fact I should've kept it as a reliable back up, as everything else keeps breaking.

Hope you get home fine.

no PEZ shot as it had half a tank of super but stopped off at the supplying dealer on way out to motorway

made it home

Car pretty minty aside from a little bit on the rear arches.  It's been owned by a guy since 1999 (2nd owner) and only done 63k. Still wearing its dealer plates and stickers.  Taken off the road in 2016 and put back on a few years ago but only just been to mot station and back I think

It seemed to drive ok the 60 odd miles back, all motorway. However a small* concern in that at motorway cruise speed it seems to randomly throw a flashing transmission"hold" light which I think is some kind of error. Interestingly it seems to to off when you stop and not come on at around town driving.  Hoping its just fluid change or an electrical gremlin due to it not being used for so long but could of course be something mores sinister.  Transmission seemed to change up and down ok though and no clonks or jerks and it kicks down ok, I need to work out what sort of rpm it should be doing at each speed to make sure its going into top

Cambelt was apparently done about 8 years ago but that was probably less than 500 miles so will have a peep and see how it looks. Non interference engine apparently which takes a bit of pressure off rushing a change

I was right about the mutt too, although apparently he's been out for a 2 hour walk whilst I was gone

I love this! Always wondered how more luxurious version of 626 compared to what I have. From photos it’s generally the same car, they’re sharing the chassis, and 626 is a good steer to begin with. Did Mazda find some extra magic for Xedos?

regarding the transmission potential error, don't suppose you remember what revs yours pulled at 70 mph cruise do you @RobT

4 speed auto I believe so guessing its high (ish) compared to a manual or 5+ speed auto

I think it was around 3,000rpm.  It wasn't frantic but equally wasn't Mk3 Cavalier 1,800rpm territory.

Mine did the HOLD thing.  It was totally random, would go 6 months without doing it, but changes could be jerky as a result.  ATF changes didn't solve it so must've been electrical.

ah ok interesting, thanks

70/3000rpm seems about what I was getting. I was worried maybe it didn't go in top but I would imagine 3rd gear at 70 on a 4 speed box would be revving the whatsits off it. I will keep an eye and see if it stays/goes

It's a nice colour and wheel combo.  Beige interior is it?  I can't quite tell from the pics.

thanks , cream /beige leather. going to get a few more pics now I've finished watching the grand prix

I think I prefer the later spoked wheels you had on yours but these are a good second

Original stereo fitted but no code, I hoped I'd find it written somewhere but it turns out its a user set code not factory and the previous owner is no longer with us. 3 wrong attempts and it permanently bricks the stereo

The seller has just sent me a link to a NOS one for £26 though so hopefully that works and shouldn't have a code set if its genuinely NOS

It's been a while since I used right hand stalk indicators too

I know they're more logical, but I don't miss the RH indicators, at all!

Cor that seems a bit over the top. I bet it's not even an especially desirable radio?

A few more pics

Shame about the rear arches as the rest is in fantastic shape aside from a little scratch and a scuff on the bumper

Time for some background on this and why I bought another non ULEZ car and why a Xedos

Well, one reason really

a-4364247.webp.9954697d671ca48e30091381b3666e6c.webp

I was a huge BTCC fan in the mid 90s and absolutely loved the 93 Rhubarb and Custard Xedos and have had a soft spot for them ever since

I've booked into the classic car display at the Brands Hatch super touring power festival end of the month but with the XM gone and the Panda going, it didn't leave much suitable and running to take.  Late last year they announced the BTCC car is coming over from New Zealand for the first time in yonks and will race at Super Touring Power festival so i thought it might be a good time to tick one off the list

I posted on Xedos ownes club FB forum a few weeks ago to see if anyone had one for sale and a lady messaged me to say her husband was looking to sell his late father's car in good original shape for what I thought was a fair price

You are mad! I'd be finding the most polluting bag of spanners I could which was exempt.

Xedos looks awesome.

I loved mine, apart from the lack of cruise control and A/C (I thought the ventilation was quite poor).

Yours has the later wheel, cruise and air, but earlier alloys. They made the design uglier as time went on to shove in more kit.

Formule 1 made a 1/43 kit of the rhubarb n' custard Xedos 6, but the last time I saw an assembled one on eBay it went for well over £100.
Interesting story about the touring car - Zytek tuned the 2.0-litre Mazda KF V6 for the Xedos 6;  Rouse Sport and Cosworth Engineering destroked the 2.5-litre KL-V6 for the Mondeo because the Probe 24v (GT) was on sale (or due to go on sale more or less worldwide) and the rulebook counted that as a Ford engine.  It was also light and compact, allowing for decent-by-FWD-standards weight distribution.

Rouse Sport/Cosworth tried to uprate the four-cylinder Zetec but the bores and valve angle were too restrictive. The Duratec was too bulky and had too slow of a piston speed - and it wasn't available at the start of the BTCC season. An SAE paper showed that FMC and McLaren Race Inc tried to destroke the Duratec for the BTCC and NATCC in 1996 ahead of an anticipated rule change (engines had to come from the range of the cars entered on the grid), but it didn't produce great results for the same reason as the Zetec. Valve angle had to be showroom spec - something TWR cheekily exploited on the 850 T-5 by chopping a wedge in the head. The rules said nothing about tilting the head to get better gas flow...

My Xedos 6 went in exactly the same places on the arches, had a weirdly rusty slam panel, but was otherwise mint. That little K series V6 screamed its tits off but wasn't exactly powerful.
I found the Pullmaflex seats great, the steering slow and gloopy, and the ride/handling balance a bit confused.

Mine was a manual and managed 30mpg around the houses.
Sold for pennies to buy my SVX in 2016. The images are on my old tower PC.

@wesacosa what day do you intend to be at Brands?

I've booked Sunday but may try to make it Saturday for the GP circuit.

Great to see it finally collected. It's probably one of the best ones left in the UK and I don't think you'll have much to worry about with it being at such low miles. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with it!

I did wonder about the spec of mine. It does seem to be some kind of mid way , which perhaps a 1996 would be given it ran from 92 to 99.  I assume everything is original given the long elderly chap ownership. There seem to be 3 steering wheels from what I can tell, earlier was 3 spoke then came a later 4 spoke than mine with the Mazda logo on it
