You can’t go wrong with a cheap Jag!

(On second thought, that statement may be incorrect)

I had a ‘94 L plate 4.0 Sovereign (passenger airbag so no glovebox) and miss it hugely. Looking forward to how you get on with this, which I’m assuming is a 3.2?

Run to work in the beast yesterday. Sticker sums the car up very well in my opinion 😎

Hazard lights though, so not completely dead!

I had a BX do this, on the A4, in rush hour. At a roundabout.

It had burnt out part of its wiring loom but also announced this with some nice acrid smoke.

I hope recovery gets to you soon.

This happened to me in my XJ40. It was the inertia switch in driver’s footwell that had triggered. Pushed it back in and all was well. Good luck!

Thank you, do you know where it is in the footwell?

I think it’s in the right kick panel or above pedals. Sorry was years ago but it’s just a plunger that you push back in. You might need to pull carpet and or trim back a bit to find it.

Have a look around the bonnet release handle.

Tried the inertia switch and didn’t change anything, I’ve got no ignition lights etc but with the ignition on all auxiliary items work apart from the starter (bridging it does nothing) I’ve dumped it for tonight as I only live 15 mins walk away however I have till 8am to move it :(

It has rained today so I’m wondering if the ecu has possibly gotten wet?

Sorry, I was hoping that might be a quick fix. When it happened to me, I was on the way to a pre-booked MOT and it died, just as an A road became dual carriageway and I had to coast up an exit slip. The only thing still working was the hazards and nothing else, which I thought was the case here. Hope you get it sorted easily.

That's rough luck. I wonder if it might just be a fuse?

That’s my thought, just not sure which one.

RAC are on their way now. I’m just gonna get it towed back to my compound if they can’t fix it I’ve checked all the fuses and they seem fine. I’m worried it is the ECU as not even the on-board computer is working :(

Turns out the RAC couldn’t dolly it back to my place 1/4 of a mile down the road and couldn’t flat tow as it’s not an emergency. I don’t suppose any shiter will be able to help me out tomorrow morning? The car has to got to be moved by 8:30am I’ll happily pay to get it moved.

Fuck sake. Surely that shows we all need to boycott the RAC. I hope someone can help and wish I could.

Bad luck - as an XJ40 owner for many years, sudden ftp is just something you get used to. The most similar incident to this for me was a disintegrated ignition barrel. A few months ago it was a snapped main belt. Then there was the oil cooler hose failure that pissed directly in front of the front wheel for a glorious few 360s on a fairly narrow road. Once was a fuel pump failure that left me on a level crossing. Heavy things to push.

Fix it up and it will be fine again. You’ll regain confidence in it and then a radiator hose will blow on Westminster Bridge. Fun. They must never be your only car.

Did they give a reason? I know you're not usually supposed to dolly a rwd in case you damage the gearbox  but surely they should send a flatbed at that point? Or are you just too close to home for cover?

The were very vague on the reason why, the wait for a flatbed was 9hrs!

My friend with his Peugeot 306 came to the rescue! 1/4 of a mile later and I’m home. I’m very surprised the little Peugeot towed the beast with no fuss! I was never going to be able to move it by 8am unless I paid loads for a recovery service.
