Oh no yet another collection thread!

This one is full of ifs and buts.

Living in Spain I have found the Spanish market to be crammed full of diesels. Petrols are scarce in the price and requirements we (the wife and I) have. Besides there are some terrible cheaters around.

SO that means two flights and hire car to stay in The Netherlands.

cats are booked in for the cattery on the 9th Jan and the first flight is taking off at 08:30ish on the 10th Jan. Car park for the airport has been reserved.

At the moment I will be suing two websites. The First one is Gaspedaal. Most dealers advert can be found from this one.

The other is this size comparison website.

The criteria is to replace the trusty 307SW 110 Hdi. There several mechanical and electrical issues. We both like the load carrying capacity the size of the vehicle and the way it can cope with the many KMs that we do to go back and forth between Spain and The Netherlands. Some areas areas in Europe are or have been made into no go zones for diesel cars. Hence our need for a petrol car.

Details on the various traffic regulation zones can be found on this website. Urban access regulations.

I think that covers the basics for now.

Ah, a Horsey Horseless Tourer.

A model which I believe sold very well in the Netherlands.

Shirly needs something which is reasonably common in both Spain Netherlands for getting bits etc. Not a Wolselsy 4/44 like I had when living in NL so it's a DAF.

Nah, I'll be a Renault Laguna 2.0 turbo GT estate.

I was also thinking of visiting Brussels and looking to test drive one of these.  It is horseless.

another sw or clio estate petrol

Could be. However, one has it's fair share of electrical issues and the other has a 3 cylinder wet belt engine.

If I was going proper vintage I'd be looking at the Lonher Porsche hybrid and the Baker Electric, maybe add those to your test drive list.

French estates -sorry: breaks- usually do well here, but when they're about 15 years old they either end up with people moonlighting as window cleaners who run them on a shoestring budget, or exported off to Africa or eastern Europe. Many will be knackered.

Gaspedaal is fine if you're only looking for cars sold by (semi)professional traders. I've found every single car I ever bought on Marktplaats.

The problem is I need a receipt for the car. For import paperwork. The more official the better it seems. Spanish bureaucracy is flaky at the best of time.

I have obviously been looking at Marktsplaats. Sometimes the differences between persons and companies lines are blurred.

This is a general search for benzine powered cars. Not all but avast majority of the listings are a Bedrijf. it is the fault of Marktsplaats. Like this one

Maybe I will find a Break and help it on it's way towards Africa.🙂

Maybe a bit more about the type of car.

We need a petrol car. I feel a 4 cylinder over 1.6 . Manual or auto.  We live in a mountainous  region thus an engine with some ok torque is needed.

Needs to have 4 passenger doors. New as possible But we are going to replace a 2003 car.  The replacement car should be smaller or about the same length as the 307 SW.  A panorama roof is preferred but not an absolute deal breaker. Electric rear windows is a must.

Money is limited But we are not looking for a bargain. We have to keep back money for export/import costs. I will go into that in another post.

Having looked as the prices it seems that Skodas, Toyotas and KIAs that can meet the above ideals  may be too expensive.

Cars in the list.

To recap. We have been happy with the 307SW. I appreciate we are not going to find a car with anything like the load space. The replacement should be around the same length, good highway cruiser and have torque for mountainous  roads. 4 cylinder as I really do not want a 3 pot and around 1.6 to 2.0 litre. No wet belts.

Replacements could be, not in any particular order.

Peugeot 3008 1.6THP

Peugeot 308 Second generation(T9). SW or hatch with a 1.6THP

Ford Focus  late third gen early 4th gen. With a 1.6 ecoboost or hopefully a 1.8. I do not think the 1.6 tiVTC engine is the right engine for us.

A Volvo V50 with a 2.0 motor. The 1.8 maybe not powerful enough and the 5 cylinder engines too thirsty.

A Toyota Avensis estate 1.8VVTi. I know nothing about these  However, they do seem a bit to long to meet the criteria.

https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/peugeot-307-2005-estate-vs-toyota-avensis-2012-estate/

We will obviously be looking for the best possible trim.

Advice on any of the above or maybe something I have missed?

Car in the end has to be liked my two of us. That is why the length is being limited.

1.6THP

I am not ultra familiar with the terminology but isn’t this Peugeot-speak for the turbo “Prince” engine as famously used in the R56-series Mini?

If so then there’s various issues to consider such as oil consumption/ residue on valves/ stretched timing chains/ associated poor running but plenty of info out there to research and help you make an informed decision.

Nice looking cars the second generation 308.

My dad has a 2016 Fabia estate with 1.2 engine and 6 speed gearbox, which seems reasonably decent though it seems hard to get firm advice on when it’s due belt replacement.

Thanks.

I also understand that the BMW MINI engine has had a fair share of problems What I  I understand they have some design differences when made by PAS thus do not have the same issues. Hence the change in names.

The Fabia could have  too smaller engine to cope with a load and mountainous roads. I have no way of proving that because round here most are diesels. A 1.2 is a Euro 6 emissions and that would suit us just great.

AFAIK from when I was looking the older THPs are just as shitty as the Mini engines - there were some changes around 2015/16 that made them better but not sure where that sits with your budget (it was out of mine). I think default AS modern normal car choice is the Megane at the moment, 1.3 TCE is meant to be good? Something like https://www.autowereld.nl/renault/megane-estate/1-3-tce-bose-40199176/details.html. Or what about a Duster? Your size comparison website is suggesting its taller but the same length as a 307SW...

Thanks for that like. It has got the wife interested which is half the battle. I have found on line that it has been in the dealer since August.  😕

Thought about one of them. Like the KIA they are further down the list because of dealers are far from numerous.

The cats are in the cattery now. It is over an hour each way.

I had a 2015 Avensis with the 1.8 petrol for about a year. Roomy but not torquey! It did the job just fine but it wasn't an enjoyable experience when we took it on our family holiday, four-up with luggage for a fortnight and plenty of driving through mountains. Also not very economical in such conditions, circa 30mpg from memory.
