Is anyone thinking of going to spectate? I’ve been down to staplefield before ( good bacon sandwiches ) but I’m struggling to drum up enthusiasm this weekend.

Have been around the finishing line on a couple of occasions, but am not really into that age of cars, though I appreciate them and their significance as well as the efforts needed to keep them running reliably.

As a rule I don’t like leaving my house at work o’clock on a day off, but it’s such a spectacle If I’m free I jump on the first train. Out at Embankment, then stroll to Westminster, up past Whitehall through admiralty arch then along the Mall to Buck house (flag was up) before back on the tube at Green Park.

What does an entry-level Brighton  eligible shiter cost then? Anyone know?

I think it was said on a Bangers & Crash I saw recently that you'd need £20k - how true that is I don't know.

Depends, most of them do one journey a year and are unusable anywhere else.

Cheaper than I thought.

I knew someone who had two VCC eligible cars. He knew it was ridiculous having two cars that he could really only use once a year.

I like to go and watch but when I do I hardly look at any of them. Exactly this. Rarity, and some selling for millions doesn't necessarily mean that they all have that market value.  It's a very limited buyer pool, and I reckon with patience there are probably sensibly priced examples out there.  As with preserved bus/coaches there's a lot of buyers who don't realise quite what a commitment they've made until well after the purchase, and once the novelty wears off they realise they really don't want the hassle.

I was really surprised looking at the values of Model TS a couple of years ago.  If you're not too fussed about the exact year or body style, and don't need it in your drive NOW, £10k seems to be entirely achievable.

They built so many fords and being so basic lots survive I expect - in one state or another anyway.

Some of these Veteran and later cars have better control systems than others for enjoyable driving - the Model T - introduced 1908 works like this - left pedal controls the gears: when pressed all the way down, it engages the first gear; when halfway down, it's in neutral; and when released all the way up, it shifts the transmission to its top gear. The center pedal is for reverse, and the right pedal is the brake...

No idea how that would cope with modern stop-start traffic.

Probably better than you'd think.  While there's a definite period of acclimatisation I don't remember finding driving one anywhere near as difficult as I expected.  Though I do remember the rate at which you found yourself being propelled towards ~40mph as soon as you went into top gear the first time to be *slightly* alarming.  It feels bloody quick on wooden wheels in a cockpit that you could easily just slide out of (in the case of the one I drove anyway).  The hand throttle didn't throw me too much as I'd spent a fair few hours behind the wheel of a couple of ancient tractors while I was a kid (Massey 35 I think).

Certainly a lot less frenetic an experience than a couple of more "conventional" cars from that sort of era I've driven with massively heavy clutches, crash boxes and equally ineffective brakes.

While it seems an odd setup today, there wasn't much on the Model T that happened by accident, and I still reckon that with the kit they had in the day and aiming at the price point they were it was a pretty damned good compromise.

Imagine the biggest headache in stop start traffic these days would probably be keeping it cool and fuel vaporisation issues.

If I lived in a slightly less odd city and had the garage space I'd definitely consider one as a Sunday afternoon car.  ...Which I'd then end up also coming up with excuses to take out far more often than that, because I'm me. 

Realistically though, I don't think I'd ever consider anything made before the late 40s (yes I'm sure there are exceptions) as something I'd want to jump in and use "daily" as it's just way too much damned work!  Both prep, the actual driving experience, and the post-journey checks and such.

Remember that a model t is to new to take part. The cheapest eligible car at the weekend's auction was £35 000, many were well over 100k.
