A Sides fire engine on a ZIL-131 chassis from 1975. This joint Soviet-French venture didn't lead to any orders, but the two units made entered service were on display/stand by at the 1980 Moscow olympics.

Sides are still with us, still making fire engines, some examples -

A 1953 Nisshin Sankar LD tricycle fire engine, note the handle bar steering. The engine is an1105cc 'L' type side valve 2 cylinder which develops 27hp at 3500rpm. It was designed by  Keizutsu Ichihara.

A Züst (?) emergency response vehicle. The torpedo shaped tank in front of the door holds acetylene for the lighting system (rather than having individual generators in each lamp).

Will it not be an acetylene generator? It doesn't look much like a pressure vessel.

Mmm not sure, there appears nowhere to put the calcium carbide or water. It could be a fancy cover over the actual cylinder itself.

Some of those car-based ambulance conversions would make superb shite campers.

Back in the mid-'90s, Preston area police were still using these:

image.jpeg.604ef263e3e4fa1dcb661a5d1ef58e8b.jpeg

Most were early '80s registered and still being used on the beat.  Ones I saw were 1.3 A-plus series engined and utterly outclassed by literally everything else on the road.  I can't imagine they were used as anything other than transport to go and take a statement from doris at number 58 about her noisy neighbour, or being given to the twat that everyone in the office hated.  I'm fairly sure they got overtaken by wildlife.

I was photographing the Plaxton bodied Merc to the left before jumping back in the saddle of a Nasty Excess trip on the 303.

I actually had that book.  Alfa Romeo Alfetta was the very first car featured in the main body of the book iirc.

Never realised at the time that a nature lover like David Bellamy (RIP) was a car enthusiast.

Looks like the one at Marconi Research Centre in Chelmsford in the 80s. It also had a pump on a trailer.

Probably a pretty standard Carmichael conversion. This one was issued to Mullion in Cornwall - the sister car 93V was issued to Fowey and came into our possession earlier this year, in somewhat better nick..

Dyfed-Powys had Maestro’s in the mid 1990s as well, but they were diesels so ideal* for chasing down renegade farmers trying to hotfoot it out of Tregaron with a tank of red diesel in their Fourtraks.

Think they were Clubman spec, had metal bumpers anyway, and those plastic wheel covers which were genuine Rover but still looked like they had come from Halfords.

A GAZ-24-03 Ambulance. The rear was separated from the front seat with a sliding window and the left back door was blocked. It carried 4 people sitting and one on a stretcher. It was based on the GAZ-24-02 estate and was equipped with a ZMZ-24D petrol engine developing 95 hp. They were built by the Gorky Automobile Plant from 1975 to 1987.

Assorted estate based ambulances, I'll plump for the Tatra when it comes to the inevitable.

Only just catching up with this, but aren't Tatras rear engined?  Could be a bit inconvenient for ambulance duties.

Yes they are and V8's to boot. However the engine is pretty flat so it's not as inconvenient as it could be. The smell, noise and heat may not have added to the ambiance.

Here's a picture of the back, not much of a step up

image.png.aa59810cdcb1b5c633b4394f8405edeb.png

VW vans have always been a popular choice for ambulances, with the same problems as the Tatra, the step up at the back seems higher than it though.

Turns out they made a 603 ambulance as well -

Again, not as high at the back as you'd have thought.

An AMC-40 fire tender on a  ZIL-130 chassis.

Another ZIL 130 based fire engine, this one is a AC-40(133G)-181A. It's biggest problem was its enormous turning circle making it next to useless in towns and other tight places.
