It can give an indication if someone has been fiddling with the odometer previously and a rough idea of what the true mileage is. It's pretty obvious that an overhaul of the front brakes including : stripping and cleaning the calipers/sliders replacing pads replacing discs new fluid would have a most advantageous effect upon retardation of the vehicle. with this in mind, a key element was identifying what size of disc was fitted to the front of this tub. As it's a taxi special MK1 (1U code) built 5 years into the MK2 Octavia build time, details are a bit sketchy. I was fairly sure it had 280mm front discs, but it felt prudent to review before parting with actual cash. the plan was simple - pull a hubcap, remove a wheel and measure. The reality was somewhat more taxing.. The hubcap came off ok. The first wheel bolt was tighter than @sierraman - taking the bouncing of all of my 10* st to loosen it. The others were no better, but eventually, 80% loosened off ok. The final 20% required a specialized approach.. Despite looking a bit sketchy, this worked a treat . Wheel off, and 280mm discs confirmed. The decision was taken to clean the wheel bolts and apply a little copper slip before tightening them back on by hand - thereby ensuring they can be removed using the wheel brace if needed. Similar was done on the other side, so now I need to get the discs ordered up. Additionally , the tank was filled after 696miles. Anyone want to guess on the MPG? I checked the tyre pressures when fuelling it up - 22-24psi seemed to be the ballpark. It's cheap motoring, and actually a comfortable place to be as long as you account for it's age and miles. I absolutely love Mk1 Octavias, so much so that I've sourced and supplied two of them for my younger brothers (One each) Andy has the doom blue number fitted with the legendary ALH VE TDI 90 that's sitting at around 220k, and young Tommy has a povo spec SDi in silver. That one's a relative baby having covered a mere 120k. Done some off reading at Twixfest Held pies that won me brownie points Been considered the most improved car Set up it's own NEW CAR POOJA (the Hindu car blessing ceremony) And. Had a weight taken off it's back axle. All this was in the boot ( plus enough rubbish to fill a full black bag!) We're nearly at 400 miles this tank and all seems well. Been a good buy this. 320touring Posted June 5 Author Share Posted June 5 Today @Lacquer Peel turned up at the unit with an exceptionally fun bit of kit.. This is a windows XP laptop loaded with both MPPS (ECU reading/writing software) and VAGEDCSUITE (map editing software). At this point, hopefully @Dave_Q knows what is afoot. Time, ladies and gentlemen for MOAR BOOZT! We got the software to connect eventually after a bit of faffing with USB ports and the cable. We got in and started our 1337 Haxorz The software found the ECU ok and read off the file. This was safely stored on the laptop and on a USB drive. (FORESHADOWING) A new map was created with a modicum* MOAR boost and fuelling. Numbers in the order of 140bhp and 320nm of torque were seen on the performance projector.. Giddy with excitement, the new map was dispensed forthwith down the silvery cable of goodness. Finally it was done. Time to start. Duggaduggaduggadugga... Fark. Maybe the battery voltage is low *Attach Polo SDI for charging* Duggaduggaduggadugga 💩💩 Time to roll back to the original map. No bother! ERRRR. Y U NOT WRITE FILE TO ECU? time for plan C Despite being shown the above, it was still recalcitrant. We tried removing the dash cluster fuse (sometimes this helps). But not this time. Reinstalling the software was tried Changing the mapping cable was tried Battery disconnection for 30mins was tried Ignition on for 30 mins was tried NO DICE. At this point, I prepared the XJR as an alternative way to get home, and was prepared for the visit to the fuel station required. All the while @Lacquer Peel remained calm and focused on problem solving. I just had a maniacal laugh 😂 Until we alighted on an interesting idea The maps that had been created showed up as "VLC media player" files with the .bin extension. The original file was only showing as "file". We altered the laptop version of the original file to have a .bin extension. This loaded up ok.
