NOW SOLD to someone on ‘ere….top bloke

I have a Rover P6 V8 auto that I’m trying to sell. Bloke ( not on here I hasten to add) contacts me from Glasgow and expressed interest. Now, this Rover has been off the road for a long time. It’s very solid, runs and drives, but hasn’t been on the road since they scrapped MOT test for 40+ year old cars.

In fact, I had to change the V5 to historic vehicle status.
Anyhoo, I sent this bloke numerous videos and photos, and invited him to come and have a look.

He declines, due to distance ( 230 miles) He says if we agree a price, he’ll send transport to collect. I then offered to deliver it on my newly acquired car trailer. We agree a price, including delivery, and he sends me £500 deposit.

We get to the designated meeting place ( 6 hour drive) Instantly, my dog takes a dislike to him…. and she loves everyone….

Car is still on the trailer. He spends half an hour searching for corrosion. Can’t find any. Asks me to start it up. Sparks up straight away. He now appears to be getting agitated, which I find mystifying….

He whips out the dipstick, and his eyes light up as he sniffs it. “Fuel in the oil mate, hard gasket’s gone” then undoes the oil filler cap. Some mayonnaise evident. “Yup , head gasket’s gone”

He never checks the coolant for any sign of contamination.
This bloke is now beginning to annoy me. I point out that this car has been stood for at least 5 years, I’ve never changed the oil, so being shunted round with the choke out is going to cause some bore wash.

Twat is having none of it. Decided he doesn’t want the car, wants his deposit back. At this point I had to walk away from the conversation in case I did something I might have regretted.

There then follows a long and protracted argument about the deposit . By now, my other half and I and dog have had enough. I agree ( much against my better judgment) to refund £350 of his deposit….

So, 12 hour round trip , a tank of fuel, and an overnight stop on the way back….. just for the pleasure of meeting a very unpleasant individual…..oh what joy..😡😡😕

Photos of what by his own admission, was the the most solid P6 he’s seen( apparently he’s an “expert”

Even I had to walk away, how Col didn’t chin him I’ll never know !
it was obvious he was determined to find fault because he’d changed his mind ( maybe Mrs Glasgow twat had only just become aware of deal and feared loss of Spanish holiday) .

What a total throbber that fella was.

I’m inclined to agree with you…..but what can you do, other than pray he meets with an unfortunate accident involving multiple stab wounds to his private parts…….

What an absolute helmet! A case of lesson learned when dealing with the public?

My sentiments exactly….. a nasty piece of work.
What pissed me off is if I was looking to “ pull the wool” I’d have changed the oil and wiped out the mayonnaise on the oil filler cap…..

Been there done that. Didn't travel though. Sent a Honda 550/4 upto Glasgow at buyer's expense. Lovely bike, a real survivor which aside from relaced wheels had just been maintained and cherished.

When it landed I rang to make sure everything is OK and he kicked off royal saying it was tatty and needed paint. It was 1800 quid when the next classified in the list was fully restored and 5 grand.

Luckily I could just tell him hard luck and hang up. Broke my heart knowing I'd sold such a nice original bike to a cunt mind

You're self control and good nature is admirable I sincerely hope you are rewarded in kind. I hope he is too. What a wanker.

Does leave a bitter taste……

What galls me the most is that he admitted he couldn’t find any rot! Even if it needed head gaskets, ( which it doesn’t) a rot free P6 V8 for less than £4k seems reasonable

On the other hand, you've had the rust-free status of it verified by an independent wan.... witness and should feel very confident flogging it.

What an utter tosser.

I would have kept the deposit tbh. That's the risk you run when you buy a car sight unseen and put down a deposit in advance of collecting.

The fact he tried to back out rather than haggle suggests that McCunt here either had sudden buyer's remorse or was one of those compulsive time-wasters that seem worryingly common in classic car circles.

Pretty much the conclusion other half reached…. A lot quicker than me. 🙄
She reckoned he got a phone call from Mrs McC putting the kybosh on the deal, and needed an excuse to back out…..

Trouble is, it could have turned nasty…… I was boxed in to a dead end trading estate….. otherwise we could have just got in and driven off

What a  skinflute.

Yes changing head gaskets on a 3.5 really is like working on the large hadron collider isn't it?

Never ever take anything for a viewing or sale. Let them waster their time and their money.

My BMW is unlikely to sell - nowhere near the reserve and it means my HGV will have to wait until next year. The bonus is I will not have to deal with the absolute fucking roasters that appear to be everywhere nowadays.

Never, never bend over backwards for a buyer. Serious people will work round you and find the time to visit it to have a look at it. Same for viewing, arrange it at a time that’s convenient for you, don’t cancel work or other commitments.

Ive just had an absolute throbber today that wanted to arrange a courier to come for a £12 item, like I’d wait in all day and do all the fucking about liaising with the courier. I’ve just cancelled the sale and told him to hit the high road, eBay is full of delusional people that think you price your time as cheaply as they do.

Yup with cars I've had quite a few of these weird things - the pay up front or deposit and will you then deliver is alas not uncommon.

Or persuading me to do a swap which involves travel to see their idiotic wreck.

The other one is meeting by each driving half way which is full of pitfalls and messing about.  As @sierramansays if they can't be bothered to turn up - especially with a rare-ish car just leave them to play their silly games elsewhere.

There is 'now't as queer as folk'... Sorry you had this trouble.

Its a bit peculiar as the value of any p6 at this sort of price point is in its expensive to sort base unit and not the ubiquitous rover v8.  Which isnt exactly famed for HGF.

I would have been made up to see how solid it was, all very strange.

You may not like him but I wouldn't go Doxxing him. Especially on a public side of a forum.

I haven’t named him….. but you’re possibly right. Might remove that…in fact I just have.

I viewed his smug countenance for long enough….

Posted

I know you didn't name him but it only took seconds with Google Lens to find out his name, where he worked and other details from that picture. Literally a couple of taps on a modern mobile and it's all there!

Just thinking too that you probably CBA with anymore hassle than you already had.

Pretty sure I’m legally ok, because I wrote a completely factual account of proceedings.

However, you’re right, it was a bit immature to post his picture, still seething 😡 I suppose
