Such an original and clean example, still has the original tape deck and momo steering wheel centre pad which seems to often be missing from these and it drives amazingly well too

Also had a respray a few years ago apparently, it came with stacks of history 

honestly I was expecting way worse for £1000, the MOT is up next month though so I’ve gone ahead and booked it in for the 7th

H reg mk1s are the best ! that looks to be in great condition, even if it needs a bit for an mot, you’ve done well at that price  

door mirrors look a bit odd, are they off a later model ?

It’s in fantastic condition, I was really surprised when I saw it in person, it had an advisory for a little rust on the rear sill last year but I’ve tapped it with a screwdriver and it’s just surface rust 

 

and yes, they’re NB mirrors, the previous owner fitted them as they’re slightly longer so really help with the c pillar blind spots, she wasn’t a car enthusiast at all and simply inherited the car from her late uncle, drove it until classic car ownership became a bit much and put the car up for sale, I’d like to find an original set though as I want to make it as original as I possibly can

How the hell did you find / buy that for £1000. I am jealous, I have been looking for a mk 1 mx5 local ish ( basingstoke)for a while for budget money and nothing like that comes up. Fingers crossed for the underside. 

And please let me know when you get bored of it, as we all know you will !

A few weeks of scouring the discussion section of all the MX5 facebook forums I’m on, most people just post on the for sale part and don’t bother checking or using the “discussion” section 

As soon as I found it I said I’ll take it no questions asked “whist others were asking for more information or extra photos that made my comment and private message stand out”

I had to travel to Bristol for this one so might be worth thinking about broadening your search area

Finally caught up on this thread and it seems like you’re living my dream 🤣 it’s amazing how similar our taste in cars is. Your mx5 is almost identical to mine, even down to the respray a few years ago. You’ve done incredibly well for £1000 though - I thought the days of good Mk1s for that price were long gone!

Mirrors should be easy enough to find, especially in red. Happy to keep an eye out for you if you’d like. There’s a breaker near me that always seems to have at least one red mk1 in stock.

The cassette deck in yours looks a little different to mine though. They must have offered a few different choices

Of course! Last time I was there they had a red mk1 that had apparently spent 20+ years in a leaky garage; totally rotten unfortunately, but being kept out of the sun meant all the trim was still mint. Hopefully that’s not gone yet. Even if it is I’ll keep my eyes out.

I really only sold it because I’m kinda getting to a bit of a point where I don’t have the motivation, patience or time for projects, I build up so much energy to get stuck in then either the weather sucks or a part I buy doesn’t fit or work because modern parts suck and because I only get 2 days off I have to potentially wait another week to have a go I just can’t be dealing with it, I like having things that work, the MX5 and CityRover are my Saturday and Sunday cars respectively at the moment and I’m enjoying them both 

the Volvo is on temporary loan to @calebaaront but that’ll be coming back soon then going away again to have the engine properly gone through, then either kept in storage for the rare occasion I need an estate car or sold on we’ll see ‘I like the idea of alternating between that and the Rover in the summer’

Ah possibly why I missed it. A bit gutted but c'est la vie. Funnily enough I was tempted to message WeirdCar to say if they ever intended to sell it...!

Tbh while something nice to have fiddle with and get running mechanically (rather than bodywork work), I'm incredibly short of time recently (work, life & learning to fly) so there would have been a good chance it'd sat for a few more months in my hands.

Work has started on the MX5

today, myself and @Arthur Daley set about replacing the roof as the original one had the ever popular split plastic window issue and also was about as water proof as a single ply tissue 

The replacement I got for free from a friend and is a MK2 ‘NB’ mohair roof with a glass window 

this job whist not inherently difficult took us novices 3 hours and left us both in immense pain, not a job I’d like to repeat 😂😭

yep I’m adult enough to admit when I’m wrong, I was told by the tester the subframe corrosion will require a weekend with a wire brush and some rust treating black paint so I’ll do that when the weather improves, whether that’s before the re test remains to be seen 

but yeah in my haste to buy an NA MX5 for a grand I obviously missed a cannon ball sized hole in the arch

So I dropped it off to a local classic car welder yesterday who turned that hole into an even bigger hole 

 

And then turned it into an even bigger hole 

 

that now has been turned into a non existent hole thanks to the properties of metal and heat 

 

just a case of waiting for the new shock to show up, fitting that then hopefully a re test early next week

If they didn’t drive so damn good I’d have accepted my fate and sold it on but I want at least 1 good summer out of it
