Not at the moment, the reason for which will be revealed anon.

Will the collection be complete before the site goes down again?

Will the union need to be involved?

Tune in next week to find out!

Is that @Talbot approaching Chaseracer Towers?

image.png

It is!  What's he brought for me?

Nice! 😎

Blimey!  That A-frame must weigh more than the C180K it's towing...

Lucky it comes apart then!

It's a fully-braked trailer, Officer... 😁

I've seen it go together at the FoD, it's bloody impressive.

where does the frame clamp too underneath

Like any other A-frame, it grabs hold of the lower track control arms.  On this C-class it's not ideal as they are multi-link arms rather than solid lower arms, but it worked ok.

The different bit is the over-run slider on the hitch, the 5m long bowden cable and the brake pedal pusher.

Is it home made? I've never seen one with the bowden cable and brake pedal actuator. Does it actually generate a lot of breaking force or is it there just to stay legal? I've never seen such an exciting technological development in the field of A framing and I'm genuinely intrigued 😅

Yes, home-made.  That does it a bit of a dis-service really, as there are (were) some actual engineering calcs done for this to size the steelwork and to work out the forces needed for the brakes.

Because of that, it does generate actual braking.. I've had to do an emergency stop before now while towing a 309 on the back of a 405 TD estate.  The ABS fired on the 405 and the 309 locked all 4 wheels.  The whole lot stopped amazingly quickly.  If anything, it braked a bit too hard, but I'd rather it be that way round.

You can feel the brakes coming on quite noticeably on the towed car..  There's a big damper on the over-run, so initially (for about 0.5 seconds) you get no braking as the over-run is moving into position.  Then the brakes on the towed car come on and you really notice it.  The modification this really needs is a return spring on the braking mechanism, as at the moment you can come to a full stop with the brakes on the towed car still on quite hard.  To get them to come off again, you have to move the towcar forwards.

Done a few miles in this now, and I like it!  Importantly, so does Domestic Management.

Never before had a car with a supercharged motor - it's a bit addictive.

Not quite up to @Talbot's hypermiling figures, but we're averaging 37mpg so far.

Do you have a right foot made of lead, Steven...? 😁

Probably a bit better on fuel than my IS (book figure is 30mpg mixed), but decidedly comparable otherwise. I had a ride in Volksy's C180K at SF, and it was a thoroughly decent thing.

Chaseracer Towers to Leominster, then back via a visit with the Aged Parentals in Malvern: 133 miles at 42mpg - blimey!

The wooden ditchfinders on the back will have to go... the tail stepped out twice today, which was er... invigorating...
