Hyundai Getz 1.5CRDi - 290723 Running Report

Well,  it was fairly cheap given the current market and it isn't totally ditched inside...

The positives stop there really;  it's small, diesel and has only one key. 

Oh yes and it cuts out when driven -  and the starter motor is Nafferton Athletic.

They’re brill little cars, I was lucky enough to get this little nugget off a work mate for free, all he wanted in return was a lift to the dealership to buy his new car.

so far it’s been very reliable if not a bit basic being a 1.1 GSI

I’ve  heard you can get a silly remap for the diesels, something like 170bhp

I'm itching to get it home,  I've brought the keys back with me and will have to go back to rescue it in the week.

Currently I'm sitting on my hands trying not to think about it.

I saw that one advertised, was half tempted but the random cutting out issue rather put me off.  Will be a bargain if it turns out to be a cheap fix mind.

That looks the spitting image of one a friend has just traded in so for a moment I wondered if it was the same car. My sister had a Getz for years and it served her well in a boring An Car sort of way so hopefully this will do the same.

There's a  weird glitch in the matrix whereby most 2006-2007 diesel Hyundais are ULEZ compliant (obviously a  mistake but lets just keep it a secret between us).  And this one is indeed ULEZ compliant.   I've just checked.

I'm hoping to collect tomorrow,  and that's certainly a fact worth knowing mwhen I'm ready to part with it again.

 I must say though, ULEZ is yet to become more than a playground taunt around these parts.

Collected this morning...

I did have a bit of a tinker with it, but it quickly became clear that it was going to require more attention than I wanted to give it on the seller's driveway.

After a slightly hairy start, we soon had the little Getz home,  I even managed to bump start it on the way home - far easier to stop with assisted brakes.

A cursory inspection of the level of quality involved with the car's recent clutch - that's the main earth to the engine left off...

Shall we tighten the starter cable up?  Nah fuck it, what's the worst that could happen...

There starter is off now and with a local specialist to see if can be rescued,  I shall be going over it with a fine toothed comb to recheck all the work relating to the clutch.

Worthy mentions to the loose battery terminals and the jubilee clip missing from the (recently replaced) MAF sensor.

It isn't too bad bodily...

Fitted the starter and rectified the issues left by the clutch replacement.

Had a good long road test with my youngest,  we've discovered that the A/c doesn't work and the cutting out issue still exists.  I'm suspecting either crank sensor or fuel pressure regulator.

For reference, this little Hyundai Getz 1.5 diesel has the D4FA engine,  documention for which can be found here.

Ok so when I first got the car,  there was a raft of faults in the memory,  and after I'd put the above mentioned cables back in the correct places, and fitted the refurbished starter motor, I gave it a reasonable test drive where it behaved right up until I went to pull onto my driveway.

There, it cut out and refused point blank to restart.  This behaviour got worse the more I drove it, although I did find that if I deleted the fault that had occurred (P0091) from the memory, it would start straight away.  If I attempted to start it whilst the fault or the issue was still present, I sometimes got P1186 also.

What does all this shit mean?

What it is imperative to remember when dealing with fault codes is that they are only there for guidance.  Indeed there are in depth tests to ascertain the cause of the fault in the manual linked above.

Annoyingly, the tests pointed to the fuel pressure regulator on the rail being ever so slightly out of range.  I did procure an entire fuel rail whilst in the scrappy earlier this week (and got pissing wet through in the process).

However I then tested the resistance of the replacement regulator and found it to be exactly the same as the one on the car.  Not only that but I also spotted it had been replaced when the parts cannon had been fired at it last time.

I started to consider the circumstances under which the fault occurred,  usually when slowing down, you know when I said the tests pointed to the fuel pressure regulator?   Yeah,  turns out that with an intermittent fault, your tests have to be a little more robust.

When considering when the fault occurred, I started working my way from the FPR and up the wiring harness moving and twisting it as I went until I managed to get the engine to cut out.

Some gentle prodding from either end eventually narrowed down the spot.  Stripping the protection off of the loom and the slightest of tugs on the wire in question:

Yep, that'll do it!

I've let in some new cable and joined it with solder/heatshrink butt joints and am hoping to road test it fully tomorrow. 

I'll go back tomorrow and add more pictures here and a few more details of the testing process.

Update time:

Taking stock of the now running Getz whilst I'm on a coach journey down to Spa Francorchamps for the GP.

It is pretty straight with only on or two minor scrapes on the back arches.

Inside is complete, but scruffy.  The modern Pioneer headunit was a bit too annoying in use, so for now has been swapped for a Chinese DAB unit.

I managed to get a replacement FM aerial from the scrapyard from 'Thirty Pound Graham'  amongst a fuel rail (for testi g purposes but unrequired) and a window regulator for the S40.

The old aerial had been broken off and it's base was seized to the roof.  Some mild violence with some pipe grips later saw the replacement installed.  I may fit a DAB adapter to it later so I can remove the magnetic one which looks a little untidy now.

Also of note was the utterly crap handbrake,  which to my surprise on this is a drum within the rear discs...

You have to strip everything off to get into these, which is probably why nobody has bothered,  I cleared out all of the dust, oiled the linkages and adjusters and cleaned inside the discs.

As can be seen here, they were quite scaley.

I then reassembled and used the adjusters to lock up the drums, before backing off one click. The adjusters here are very course and can be got at through an access hole in the disc.

I still needed to tweek up the cables a little, and this got the handbrake holding at 3 clicks.

A Sunday day shift at work can be rather a quiet affair,  which means I could give the car a good scrub up.  By this point I'd done about 300 miles in it and achieved a lowly 45mpg.l, I'm hoping that will improve now the car is covering a longer commute - the previous owner was doing less than 10 miles each way.

The next thing is to get the front wheels balanced, and try and find the rattle from the front suspension - I suspect it is the top mounts.

Also there is a modification to carry out on the engine mounting - originally there was a Hyundai part for this job which is NLA in the UK,   I could buy a stainless one for a tenner from Aus, but I have a selection of large washers and a pillar drill... 'We can rebuild you, we have the technology.'

Wow hats off to your skills on this one, tracing weird wire faults is 'five-spanner Haynes' in my book. 

There's a decent little car in there under all the bodges. 

I had a Cee'd 1.6 td inherited from my Dad, great car. Typically I mapped it with a cheapo map and blew the turbo but it went like stink until it didn't any more. 

Are you going to attempt to get the AC regassed m9 or are you one of those weirdos that likes being boiled inside a car?

The A/c does actually make noises; when the a/c gas is low, you can often here it moving around the pipes. (sort of as if you have airnin thencentralnhesting),.

Though the condenser looks manky, it does still have some pressure.  The biggest issue with this was the temperature blender flap was stuck,  it seems to have eased now I've moved it manually at the side of the heater box.

Also i should say I was really lucky with this one finding the above linked engine manual.  Having an idea of what the sensor values should be really aids testing.

Well it seems this will become a long term member of the fleet - ultimately for No.1 daughter to learn to drove in.

With that in mind I have resurrected the air con although, the condenser looks terrible, so this may only be temporary.

Next I plan to install remote central locking. This isn't straightforward as there is no actuator in the Driver's door, so a bit of lateral thinking required.  Typically I cannot find my stash of Citroën locking motors which I had plenty of. Buggeration.

I would think they made C/L motors common to each side and maybe front to rear too. Shirley it would be easier to buy a 2nd hand motors from the Bay?

This is true, but they want proper money for them - unless I go scrumping for one at the scrappers.  Knowing my like I'll get served by "thirtyquidmate" again which has rather soured my recent trips.

Having covered a shade under 500 miles this last week,  I was pleased to work out that it managed 48mpg whilst being driven like it was recently stolen - I'm running a bottle of diesel additive through it at the moment.
