Is your mechanic (or the one who did the previous work) a volvo specialist? I think his name is Steve?

I only know this because my folks live in Reepham and managed to get a V40 through its entire life (1999 - 2019 RIP 160k SRS fault I believe). They ended up giving him the car free when it became EOL as thanks.
Anyhow, I probably don't need to tell you this because you'll have passed it a hundred times in your life, but apparently the breaker near the A1 Black Cat roundabout is as good a Volvo breaker as there is in the country.

It’s not I’m afraid! I use a chap in my village who’s MOT’d my families cars for probably 30 years so is just someone we can trust.

Im only about 25 mins from Reepham though and my other half grew up and went to school there!

I drove past the breakers near the black cat roundabout when I went to Milton Keynes to collect the dog guard and if it wasn’t 8pm on a Saturday night I probably would have stopped for a nosey!

Dunno if that Volvo breakers is still run by the same bloke but he was (in)famously grumpy.

Thing is, when you've got the best supply of bits in the country, I guess you can take this attitude.
In fairness, I've always found secondhand car parts people fairly grumpy.

One thing I never realised about Volvos is quite the love Volvo fans have for them.

Bar the T4 Transporter, I’ve never had a car that people wave at you in.. I’ve now been waved at 3 times by other V50s and still think it’s fucking weird 😂

Then today I chucked our old mattress on the roof bars and took it down the tip, unloaded it, went over to the tip shop and ended up buying a petrol mower (for £3!) and when I wheeled it back to the car, one of the dump staff was looking around it and in the open drivers window. I was waiting to get told off for something but he comes up and says sorry I wasn’t being nosey, lovely aren’t they though these Volvos, telling me about his V70 then asked to look at the clocks/stereo in the V50 with the ignition on as he’d never been in an R design.

I just can’t see the enthusiasm people have for them. I mean, I love it - considering it owes me £1k now, it’s a brilliant car and as a run around / dog car / tip run car I couldn’t ask for much more (although I’d swap it for an E61 530d in a heartbeat..) it’s in my mind really nothing special and I think it feels much older than a 2012 from the feel and look of the interior.

Anyways, still a great buy and have done over 1000 trouble free miles now.

Pic from collecting the new bed last weekend

PS. I’m not a fog light wanker, they are the LED DRL’s

Soooo…

With the impending sale of the BMW hopefully on the horizon with the intention of replacing it with a VW T5 which will of course be dog friendly, I won’t need the Volvo.

Its having a new windscreen fitted tomorrow and I was chatting with a neighbour tonight who said he reckons I’d easily get £3k for it.

I laughed it off then thought you know what, let’s see. Stuck it on FB for £3k and within an hour I’ve had 4 people ask to view it. One fella wanted to come at half 8 tonight in the dark and pouring rain but I’ve said no until after the weekend when I’ve had the screen done and cleaned/emptied it.

Mad. Never thought I’d see it sell for that sort of figure, I thought low 2’s on a good day.

Madness to sell it, tbh.

But I'll enjoy the 'looking for a dog-friendly runabout' thread in 3 months time, so crack on!

SOLD!

Viewed, tried to knock me down, left, messaged trying a higher offer, declined, messaged 2 mins later saying ok will pay asking price but goes away to the lakes tomorrow so can he collect Monday eve.. £200 deposit paid.

Happy days. Circa £2k profit and it’s done a great job for us for a couple of months

Tbf I'd sooner have a t5 van than a v40 as well, but I'm not normal either.

Really enjoyed this little project, nice to have something that visually has progressed so much.

I honestly think judging by the amount of interest I had that I could have probably pushed for £3500 if not £4k. I am however over the moon with the profit I’ve made and feel as though it’s still a fair enough price that someone’s got a decent, maintained car for a decent price and there’s enough meat on the bone if they wanted to continue tidying the last couple of bits and sell on even.

Just need a bargain like this every couple of months and I’d be alright!

Well done that man! Did you sort the aircon? ISTR you saying it wasn't working.

Nope, never got round to it - advertised as non working and explained to the lad that I’d had it regassed but looks like a knackered compressor.

Had one in my watch list on eBay but that’s another £40 for a used one, fitting, £50 odd on regas to hope it works.. I didn’t see it worth my time and money to be honest!

Some people don't seem worried about non working aircon. Some don't even know they've got it. Son had a mk10 Civic, bought almost new. Aircon never really worked properly. I had to persuade him to get it sorted before the warranty ran out. Ironically, in the 500 quid AS Civic he's running now, it works perfectly!

Well played! Does that outweigh the hit you took on the 3 series?

Very roughly I would say I’m still about £800 up.

Bit annoyed at the loss on the BM but having owned around 65 cars in my time, it’s the first loss I’ve ever made so I can’t complain! The Transit camper I made probably 3.5k on even after owning it almost a year so I can’t grumble!

Care to hazard a guess on what DVLA have earned out of you in that period?

At £80 a pop for private plate retention, too much. Plate has been on probably 20 odd cars I’d imagine.
