I tried to change the rubber part of the wiper blades but the rubber part was a little different between the ones I had and the black wipers I got hold of.  So I have put on the black ones and will look more into this later as I have more important things to do to this one now.

Specifically booked the ferry from hirtshals to stav to ride that day trip jobbie then out via Kristiansand ( unlike top gear I knew where I was )

Yes, things are quite bad in parts of Norway now, but fortunately not here. I have a river 200m from the house, but I'm lucky that it's high up in the watercourse and there are several waterfalls downstream, so the chance of a major flood here is small.

In the autumn of 2017, there was record rain in the area here, things went well for us, but it were worse downstream,  where this picture was taken.

I can't remember the width of the wiper blades but I think it was 330mm so this is perfect thank you.

Have started to fix some of the MOT deficiencies.

And it became clear why the trailer connector did not work when I disassembled it. It had completely fallen apart.

Changed to a new one and seems to be working now with a test lamp, will have it tested on a trailer to be sure.

Got my dad to buy me some light bulbs while he was in town. But these are a bit too big to go into the instrument cluster, so have to find some other light bulbs. Have ordered some, hope they fit.

And the parts to fix this have been sent and I hope to receive them on Monday. So more will happen here when they arrive.

Got the parts today and of course there are some problems. The new brake light switch does not fit and is not the same as the old one. Is this type all lists for W110 but is clearly wrong.

And have searched the Bosch part number on the old one but can't find anything.

So after some creative searching, I have found a brake light switch for various Mercedes trucks and vans from the 1960s and newer and this one looks identical. Autodoc has 2 types of these so have ordered both. Hope one will fit.

 

An important lesson here, disassemble the old parts and look at them before ordering new ones. If I did, I wouldn't have wasted a week.

If it makes you feel any better, I ordered the wrong thermostat kit for the Proton (right thermostat, wrong gasket) when ordering blind. I then took it apart, realised my mistake, put it back together and made a mental note to order the right part. Enough time passed for me to forget the gasket shape, convince myself it was an entirely different one, order a new thermostat kit and then realise it was a different wrong* kit again 😅

Yes, unfortunately, not all old cars are easy to find parts for.

This with the brake light switch has scared me a bit because if I can't get hold of one that fit and can't adapt another one to work then I may have to take the car off the road for good for something so stupid. So it's clear to me that I have to start building up a stockpile of parts for this one.

To be fair, any brake light switch could be made to work with the correct pieces of mechano, fashioned into a bracket.

If its a pressure switch like on mine you could always blank it off and get an auto electrician (or you if you can) to fit a pedal operated switch like modern stuff.

I have a slightly older Merc W187 and have found that the Unimog spares places are good sources of spares for the mechanical bits, I don't think they changed some of the parts from the unimogs introduction in the 50s until the 80s. Often cheaper too!

That's a good idea and something I'll look into more. The lift pump on this is now a Unimog part so is something I should think about doing more.

Do you have any threads or pictures of your W187 here? As I would like to see it if I can.

No thread as I haven't done a lot yet other than stockpile parts for the recommissioning!

Have a few pics though from delivery day a few years ago:

It drove in there, reluctantly and with no brakes, so it needs quite a bit of attention, but not surprising as it hasn't been on the road since the early 80s. It's had a cheap respray for some filming work which is a shame, but I'll probably just run it as it is once it goes as I'm not a fan of trailer queens.

I think I prefer the looks of the fintail actually, the front end treatment on mine is the very definition of a cheap 'facelift' to drag a couple more years out of the model! 

However when it was offered to me I couldn't resist as it is so unusual and rare (never sold here, I think mine was bought by a serviceman in Germany and brought back after). Plus suicide doors were on my bucket list of car options.

I've enjoyed reading about yours, and hope you get the registration issue resolved in the most painless way possible, certainly not involving any cactii!

Got hold of some other light bulbs and these fit, so now the main beam signal light works again.

The next thing was the left rear brake hose. And this went very well. Fortunately, someone before me did as I do and covered all brake pipe/hose connections with wax/underseal, which meant that the brake hose came off without a problem. I will again cover the connectors with wax/underseal when they are dry.

New one on

And things have gone too well now so of course something must go wrong now. When I had to loosen the left rear bleed nipple, it snapped right off without using any force. So new wheel cylinder are on the list of things to do.

So new wheel cylinders for all 4 corners and a complete brake set must be ordered and I think I'll take a little car break now. And I hate drum brakes.
