Monday the belt is being done

so, I’ll be doing a 6-700 mile round trip worth of driving to shitefest and back on a brand new belt I’ve not had the chance to make sure all is okay

fantastic

this will certainly be an adventure

Do you have the locking tool kit?  The ones for the cam and fuel pump are just bolts but the crank locking tool which fits behind the starter motor is pretty critical I found.

Whilst he has got it apart get him to check the bottom pulley which has a flexible donut to absorb sudden shocks. This is all I know, mine was a petrol/turbo.

got the blower fan out tonight

well i must say, it was completely siezed solid!

got some effort to actually crack it off

can't get it to spin freely, it does move by hand but not freely

so i need a replacement it seems

Fan is completely dead, worn brushes too as well as being rotten to hell

so, time to source a replacement blower fan

Taking it to him is the least I can do for one of my victims

Fuel leak coming from the pump/solenoid area……

2 leaks now, I’m really starting to get reluctant to take this to shitefest especially leaking diesel

i decided it would be easier for him, as all his tools are there etc

well, it's been a few hours since he's started

i know that cos i've driven past and seen him working on it

no message yet, my god might this actually be going well?

if he does a good job it'll be useful to know someone else locally who's good

Hopefully he does a good job!

When the steering rack rusted out internally in the Meriva we found a bloke in the next village who supplied and fitted the part for £350 cash.

Cheapest I could find an used rack was £150 and he stuck a bloody clean one in. Subframe down job too. Job was really good. Took him 3 days

Hopefully he just takes pride in his work, and doesn't see it as that difficult. Same vein as why I'll smash your Dyson to its component parts and rebuilt it back up as spotless as new for under £100 as its at my house, with no overheads

i've certainly got a decent list now for all jobs

Well it’s done

collecting it tomorrow, few things he wants to show me and he’s said he’ll pick me up in the morning

wanted £150 for doing it, paid him 170 cos of how hot it is today

Presumably, you have checked that the belt etc has actually been changed and that any 'old' parts removed are actually from your car.  I'm sure all is above board, but that turnaround and price is unusually favourable.

I would also have probably risked using someone I did not know for that price. It would have been handy a decade or two ago when I had a Citroen CX GTi Turbo 2 which needed a clutch change, for which I was quoted 16.5 hours plus parts by a Citroen dealer (no one else would touch the job!). I sold the car.

Drove past at work in the sainsburys van as I had a delivery down his street

he was under the bonnet on one trip past and the next one he was wiping his forehead and smoking a cigarette so I’d certainly say he’s done it lol

if he’s done a decent job then I’ll use him again, can’t quite believe how cheap it was

In times like these, It's an easy £150 for someone who has the skills and kit and wouldn't otherwise be doing anything else! Without the overheads of a workshop, let's assume 5 hours labour, ~£30 an hour cash sounds alright

(Assuming it was a cash in hand basis?)
